The next morning, just as dawn was breaking.
Mother Xu woke up early. Since the engagement party was over, An Nuannuan had officially moved in with Xu Musen.
The walls of their room were still adorned with festive artwork, and various pictures from the engagement party were hung all around the room.
According to custom, the new daughter-in-law is supposed to greet her parents-in-law early on the first day.
But Mother Xu wasn't someone who adhered strictly to those old-fashioned customs. Her son had found a good wife, and she, as a mother-in-law, was pleased. It also meant a better life for her son.
She glanced at her husband, Father Xu, who had drunk quite a bit last night and was still asleep. She decided not to wake him up and planned to go out and buy some groceries to make breakfast for everyone.
However, just as she pushed open the door, the aroma of food already wafted through the air.
And she heard the sounds of cooking and cheerful conversation coming from the kitchen.
She peeked through the kitchen door.
There in the kitchen, Xu Musen and An Nuannuan were both wearing matching aprons, busy frying eggs.
An Nuannuan held a spatula in one hand and nervously gripped the pan's handle with the other, watching the eggs sizzle as if she were facing a formidable opponent.
"When should I flip them over...?"
Xu Musen stood behind her, gently guiding her hand with a smile, "When the edges of the egg whites start to curl, you can flip them. Don't worry about the eggs sticking to the pan as long as the pan is hot and the oil is cool."
"Oh." An Nuannuan nodded, her large, clear eyes fixed on the eggs as they took shape. She picked up the spatula and carefully flipped them over.
"Sizzle..."
The sound of the egg hitting the oil was particularly pleasant.
In no time, An Nuannuan successfully finished frying the eggs. The edges were a bit crispy, but they looked pretty good.
"Well done!"
Xu Musen praised her, giving her cheek a gentle pinch.
"Hehe..."
An Nuannuan smiled with delight but was a bit disappointed, "The edges are still a little burnt."
"It's okay, you'll get better with practice. Do you want to learn other dishes?"
"Yes! Yes, I want to learn!"
The two of them were so lovey-dovey in the kitchen that it looked more like a date than cooking.
Mother Xu stood at the door, quietly watching, her heart filled with warmth.
She used to worry that given An Nuannuan's family's good background, living together might cause some friction.
But now it seemed like she had overthought it.
It's not about a girl having to do household chores, but the willingness to cook happily for the man shows deep affection.
"Mom, you're up."
Xu Musen turned and saw his mom standing at the door.
"Mom..." An Nuannuan, blushing slightly, also greeted her.
"Oh, you two are up so early. You were busy all day yesterday; you should rest more. I'd have made breakfast."
Hearing "Mom" from the both of them made Mother Xu's heart swell with joy.
Xu Musen smiled and said, "Nuannuan insisted that a new daughter-in-law must be diligent on her first day, or else her mother-in-law might look down on her."
"Nonsense, you're just making stuff up..."
An Nuannuan, blushing beet red, reached out to cover Xu Musen's mouth.
Mother Xu couldn't help but laugh. She admired Nuannuan even more, feeling it was rare to find such a thoughtful and excellent girl in this day and age.
"Oh, Nuannuan, don't listen to my silly son. We're family; it doesn't matter who cooks. Don't worry about things like that."
Mother Xu continued, poking her son's head, "And you, stop scaring and teasing Nuannuan for no reason!"
"Mom, Musen didn't bully me. I want to learn how to cook so I can make delicious food for the family in the future."
An Nuannuan said with a warm and sincere smile.
Mother Xu, fondly, patted her head, "Good, my son is lucky to have met such a wonderful girl."
Then she gently tapped Xu Musen's head, "Look how nice Nuannuan is to you. From now on, I'm siding with her, not you!"
His family status dropped another notch.
"Alright, alright, you've got a daughter-in-law and forgotten about your son."
Xu Musen teased.
Mother Xu chuckled and decided to stop being a third wheel. She turned and walked out of the kitchen.
By this time, Father Xu had woken up, came into the living room for a glass of water, and saw Mother Xu coming out of the kitchen.
"Isn't breakfast made by you?"
"It's Nuannuan and Musen. These kids got up early, saying a new daughter-in-law must cook on her first day, or else the mother-in-law will be dissatisfied."
Mother Xu teased with a smile.
Father Xu paused, "What are they saying? We're not an old-fashioned family. Nuannuan's family is well-off; it's normal if she can't cook. We shouldn't give them the wrong idea. I need to talk to that boy..."
"Alright, alright, what am I going to do with you." Mother Xu stopped him with a disdainful look, "They're clearly just joking around, unlike you, who has no sense of humor at all..."
Father Xu scratched his head and took another sip of tea. Looking around the room, he felt relieved that his son had settled down.
"By the way, still no news from Ming Yue and her mother?"
"Sigh..."
Mother Xu sighed and shook her head, "No. Last night, Ru Shuang called me, saying Ming Yue wasn't feeling well and couldn't make it, but I sensed something was off in her tone."
