Chapter 164: As long I capture Wang Yun, my sacrifice is worth it!
“Captain, I’ll get out and check,” the driver said as he exited the vehicle.
Although they were program inspectors from another country, if they were to accidentally harm the local civilians, they would have to face the consequences accordingly.
Just as the driver stepped out and walked a few paces, Everick’s attention was drawn to the rearview mirror. He spotted several steel nails reflecting light on the road.
In a flash, Everick leaned out the window and yelled to the driver, “Get back quickly, it’s a trap!” freewēbnoveℓ.com
But by the time he issued the warning, it was too late. The sixty-year-old uncle, who had been lying on the ground clutching his calf and wailing, suddenly changed his expression dramatically. With a swift flip of his wrist, a gun appeared in his hand.
Bang! Bang!
Two shots rang out, and a second later, an alarm started blaring from the program inspector’s body.
“You have been eliminated,” a voice from the show’s crew announced in his ear.
The program inspector watched in shock as the old man’s expression shifted dramatically from pain to fierce determination. He froze momentarily, then helplessly collapsed to the ground. Now he was playing dead, his eyes filled with remorse.
“Engage them! They’re Wang Yun’s men!” Everick shouted.
From inside the car, Everick swiftly grabbed his submachine gun, while the two elite program inspectors beside him also readied their weapons.
Although the car provided some cover, their positioning was far from ideal, and currently, the vehicle was immobilized.
The elite inspectors leaned out, unleashing a barrage of gunfire toward the old man. With agile reflexes, he rolled away, narrowly dodging the onslaught, and took cover behind the trunk of a nearby tree.
“You keep watch on him. Everyone else, stay alert!” Everick commanded, his eyes scanning the surroundings cautiously. Based on his experience, there was certainly more than one enemy.
As expected, just as he issued the command, a young man with a backpack, who had been walking ahead of them, came into view. He spun around, his gun barrel instantly aimed at their car’s windshield.
Bang! Bang!
The windshield cracked under the impact.
“Get down!” Everick, seated in the back of the car, yelled out as he ducked behind the seatback.
Unfortunately, the elite program inspector in the passenger seat wasn’t as lucky. His alarm bell rang loudly as the third shot struck.
“Damn it!”
Everick found himself in a dire situation, immobilized, with two fugitives handcuffed to him. The fugitives were quick-witted. Seeing Everick under attack, they strategically dropped to either side of the car, effectively binding Everick between them. This forced Everick to consider retrieving the key to unlock both their handcuffs and his.
However, the fugitives’ strength was immense, and they managed to wrench Everick’s arms apart. Now, he couldn’t even reach for his gun.
“Captain!”
The last remaining program inspector in front turned around only to see his captain in a dire situation. He turned over and was about to unlock the captain’s handcuffs. But at that moment, he found himself squarely in the line of fire through the windshield.
Bang! A gunshot rang out, followed by the ominous sound of beeping.
The inspector, with a look of profound regret, glanced at the captain who was only partially freed from his handcuffs, and slowly slumped to the ground.
“Damn it! Wang Yun, I’m going to kill you!” Everick erupted in fury.
The fallen inspector had essentially traded his life for Everick’s partial freedom.
With his right handcuff now undone, Everick swiftly smacked the two fugitives on the back of their heads, knocking them out cold.
Though he was now free, four people from different angles began closing in around the car.
“This is bad! We’ve already lost three men, we need backup!”
“Everick, hang on,” Coniso shouted into Everick’s walkie-talkie.
Coniso, hidden in the shadows, couldn’t bear it anymore after witnessing the scene. If this kept up, Everick might be killed.
Everick’s face turned ghostly pale.
“Don’t come here! These four aren’t Wang Yun,” he cried out.
“Their build is all wrong. Wang Yun must be nearby. Don’t come any closer,” Everick screamed into the radio.
“You can’t hold them off, I can’t just stand by and watch you get killed.”
But Coniso couldn’t stand idly by any longer. He was nearing the edge of madness, his voice growing hoarse with desperation.
Everick’s eyes were bloodshot, his lips bleeding where he’d bitten them in anxiety. His hands, veined and tense, gripped the walkie-talkie fiercely. His expression was one of deep despair and resolve.
“What does death matter? Even if I die, if it means we can capture Wang Yun and force him out, I’m willing to make that sacrifice,” Everick said, his final words ringing out clear.
Coniso and the other inspectors heard him loud and clear, their bodies trembling. At that moment, this was no longer just a show for them. It felt as though they were truly on a battlefield, with teammates sacrificing their own lives for peace and victory.
Bang! Bang!
However, Everick’s hope was just that–hope.
Coniso wouldn’t just stand by and watch Everick meet his end.
As the four assassins encircled the car, one of them reached for the door handle. Suddenly, a sharp gunshot rang out from a distance, striking the handle directly.
The assassin trying to open the door was injured by the bullet’s ricochet. The four exchanged glances and quickly took cover beneath the front of the car.
Reinforcements were coming from behind.
“Brother Yun, someone’s coming from behind! It must be Everick’s men!” one of the assassins reported to Wang Yun.
“I see them. Hold your positions and only move when they get closer,” Wang Yun commanded from within the car, setting aside the newspaper he had been reading.
He casually picked up a submachine gun beside him, polished the muzzle until it gleamed, and exhaled a breath on it.
With a determined stride, Wang Yun stepped out of the car. He walked toward a black car not far off, each step deliberate.
His face bore a mix of shadow and smirk. This was a victor’s scorn for the loser.
“Everick!”
From a distance, a van sped forward. Coniso leaned out from the window, his gun firing furiously. His aim was to provide cover, preventing the four assassins sheltered behind the car from returning fire.
Thunderous gunfire erupted, sounding almost like firecrackers during the Chinese New Year.
Screech—
The van came to a sudden, sharp halt. Coniso brought a formidable group with him–thirty strong. Following the lead van, six more vehicles arrived in quick succession. Like dumplings being dropped into a pot, his team rapidly disembarked.
“Catch them alive!” Coniso shouted to his team, who charged forward immediately.
The four assassins didn’t even attempt to peek out but began firing indiscriminately. However, the front-row program inspectors from the United States, who had dashed ahead, were well-prepared. They wielded bulletproof shields, robust and impenetrable, ready to withstand any gunfire.
