Chapter 21 - : Leave Father, Keep Brother
Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Leave Father, Keep Brother
The little one’s bright eyes, brimming with large teardrops, sniffled and stared into his deep gaze.
Lu Nuonuo said, “Then Uncle, smile.”
Ji Muye avoided her gaze, “I don’t like to smile.”
The tender little face fell in disappointment, her clear, bright eyes visibly saddened, and she pursed her lips and lowered her head.
Seeing the little one in his arms about to cry again, Ji Muye could only force a smile, stiff though it was.
Lu Nuonuo immediately burst into laughter.
...
She turned to Lu Xining beside her with a radiant smile and pushed her little face closer.
“Mommy, wipe it.”
Lu Xining looked at her helplessly, not understanding why her daughter wasn’t afraid of Ji Muye, given his stern face.
She wiped Lu Nuonuo’s face with a tissue.
Just as she finished, the little one turned back and beamed at Ji Muye, shaking her small face at him.
Lu Nuonuo said, “All clean now!”
She shook her head too vigorously and lost her balance, toppling to the side.
Ji Muye and Lu Xining both reached out.
The man was quicker and pulled the little one back.
Lu Xining anxiously said, “Nuonuo.”
Lu Nuonuo giggled, “Mommy, Nuonuo is fine.”
She turned her head and kissed Ji Muye’s cheek, “Thank you, Uncle.”
Seeing her unharmed, Lu Xining’s heart relaxed.
Noticing the man’s dark, inscrutable expression, Lu Xining hurriedly reached out for her child, “Nuonuo, come to mommy.”
But the little one pushed Ji Chao and Ji Ze towards her instead, her clear eyes shifting, then snuggled into Ji Muye’s embrace with a sly smile.
Lu Nuonuo said, “Mommy, hold brother.”
She knew Mommy had always wanted both brothers.
She loved Mommy, loved her brothers, and they all loved her.
The rest…
It was just this dark-faced uncle.
Lu Nuonuo, supporting her clever little head, felt a bit troubled. Her mommy was also her brothers’ mommy, so was their daddy also her daddy?
But this “Daddy” was not endearing; Mommy only wanted the two brothers, what should she do now?
She loved Mommy the most and would definitely help Mommy.
It seemed she could only “exclude father, keep brothers.”
Noticing Lu Nuonuo’s focused gaze, Ji Muye looked down.
Little Dumpling sweetly smiled at him, hugging his arm, her little cheeks chubby and bouncing.
Ji Muye’s heart melted and he held her in his embrace.
Finally, Ji Muye holding Lu Nuonuo, and Lu Xining holding her two sons, they took many group photos.
Every now and then, the little one glanced at Ji Muye, and seeing him not smiling, her eyes started to turn rosy again.
Ji Muye had no choice but to play along.
An indescribable emotion slowly flowed through his heart.
After the photos were taken.
The three little ones divided the pictures like sharing toys, each claiming some.
Lu Nuonuo picked one from her share to give to Ji Muye, her teary eyes clear and filled with joyous little stars.
She looked up at him, “Uncle, for you.”
The man silently took it, but upon seeing the photo clearly, his gaze froze.
This photo…
It looked too much like a family portrait of five.
Lu Nuonuo nestled in his embrace, her innocent smile bright, her fair hand grasping his black shirt, and in the photo, his mouth slightly curved up, his gaze on Lu Xining beside him, who held Ji Chao and Ji Ze, their eyes’ curves similar and enchanting as they all smiled.
Lu Xining stood beside Ji Muye, caught sight of the photo, and faltered.
Watching her daughter return by her sons, she cautiously said, “I’m sorry, Nuonuo has always liked sharing, don’t mind it, just throw away the photo when she’s not looking.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Ji Muye’s face instantly darkened.
The man’s height was exceptionally tall, towering over her by a significant amount. Having held the child for a long time, his crisply ironed trousers were slightly wrinkled, adding a hint of languidness and casualness to his demeanor.
Ji Muye’s eyes were distant and cold, “Do you think I’m the type to carelessly lose the children’s things?”
Being so close, Lu Xining could smell the scent of his body wash.
Very familiar.
It was somewhat like her favorite one during their marriage.
She took two steps to the side, increasing the distance between them.
The light shallowness of the man’s eyes narrowed, his refined and restrained temperament suddenly turned cold, and his powerful aura was inescapable.
Lu Xining glanced at the time and said softly, “Nuonuo, brother is going home now, say goodbye to him.”
Ji Chao and Ji Ze were a bit reluctant to leave.
Ji Chao even directly asked Ji Muye, “Dad, can we stay here tonight?”
The man stood under the light and said uncompromisingly, “No.”
Ji Ze also wanted to stay; hearing this, he looked down dejectedly.
Ji Chao turned to comfort him, “Little brother, we can come back tomorrow.”
Lu Nuonuo also didn’t want them to leave, she looked helplessly at her mother.
Lu Xining sighed, squatting down to hug the three children.
“Xiao Chao, Xiao… Xiao Ze, mom will pick you up from school tomorrow, okay?” She still didn’t know how to face her youngest son; she hesitated while saying his name.
“Nuonuo, be good, brother has to go to school, tomorrow mom will take you to pick up brother from school.”
The three little ones nodded obediently.
Ji Muye leaned against the door frame, his black fragmented hair falling on his forehead, watching them without a word.
Lu Nuonuo was helping her brothers pack their little backpacks.
Ji Muye’s emotionless voice, coming from behind her, “Do you think this will get you the custody rights?”
Lu Xining turned to look at him and said flatly, “I just want to spend more time with the two children.”

The man’s eyes, as cold as perpetual ice, seemed to see right through her soul.
His gaze shifted to Lu Nuonuo, complex and indecipherable, “Since you’ve already had a daughter with another man, why bother with my children?”
Ji Muye’s tone shifted sharply, “Lu Xining, one should not be too greedy.”
Lu Xining was so angered by his words that her chest heaved violently.
She glanced at the children in the room with concern, arranged for someone to watch them, and then pulled Ji Muye by the arm to the study.
“Ji Muye, other than providing sperm, what else did you do? I carried them for ten months, I fed them, I took them to the hospital when they were sick, and I’ve been the one closely taking care of them for four years.”
“Being a dad for two years, haven’t you forgotten those four years ignoring the kids? Who was it that was on business trips during their birthdays? Who has never attended a single parent-teacher meeting at their kindergarten?”
“It was you!”
Lu Xining gritted her teeth, her eyes gleaming with suppressed anger.
“Ji Muye, who is really the greedy one?”
The man was rendered speechless by her barrage of accusations, and as his gaze met her’s, flushed with agitation, she averted her face.
Ji Muye’s voice was hoarse, “If you care so much about the two children, why did you choose to divorce and not keep their custody rights?”
Lu Xining said mockingly, “Did I not want to? As an orphan, how could I win against an heir of the Ji Family?”
Ji Muye subconsciously picked up the thread, “Then you shouldn’t have…”
The study fell into silence.
Both remembered the unpleasantness of the divorce.
Back then, Lu Xining had initiated the divorce. Ji Muye had refused, and had sternly said that if she wanted a divorce, she would have to give up the custody of the two children; otherwise, a divorce would be impossible.
At that time, she was pregnant with her daughter, and Ji Muye had done something that utterly disheartened her, leaving her unable to continue living with him.
Lu Xining was a doctor herself; just the thought of her husband taking her twin sons to meet his mistress overwhelmed her emotionally.
This was detrimental to her pregnancy. Before becoming a mother, she had to prioritize herself.
No matter what, the marriage had to end.
Lu Xining lowered her gaze to the floor of the study, slowly steadying her emotions, not wanting the residual anger from the past to consume her present life.
After a long silence, she finally spoke slowly.
“I divorced not because I didn’t want them, but because I didn’t want you.”
“I don’t want you, Ji Muye.”
