Chapter 3

Will You Marry Me?

Not daring to confront him head-on, Lu Zhuo’s mother could only mutter under her breath, “Kids from small families like yours are always so uncouth. Our Lu Zhuo is so unlucky to be engaged to a family like yours… But it’s good that the marriage has been canceled. Let’s see who else is blind enough to want to marry Xu Jiaojiao other than our Lu Zhuo!” After saying that, Lu Zhuo’s mother glanced at Xu Jiaojiao subtly, snorted coldly, and left with Lu Huan.

“You motherf*cker…” Xu Zhengyang wanted to chase after her. How dare this woman curse his sister!

“Brother.” Xu Jiaojiao grabbed Xu Zhengyang’s arm and gently shook her head. “Forget it.” Her brother’s reputation was not great to begin with. If he were to fight Lu Zhuo’s mother today, she did not know what others would say about him… In the past few years, Xu Zhengyang had fought with others because of her. She did not want Xu Zhengyang to be misunderstood again.

Xu Zhengyang turned around to look at Xu Jiaojiao’s reddened eyes and cursed in a low voice. He scratched his head in frustration. “Jiaojiao, don’t be sad. It’s that idiot Lu Zhuo who’s not good enough for you. There are many good men in this world. I promise to find you a better one!”

Xu Jiaojiao pursed her lips. When she thought of Lu Zhuo leaving without hesitation, it would be a lie to say that she was not sad. After all, he was someone she genuinely loved. He was her reason to work hard to survive, and he was also her motivation to change for the better. Now, however…

Xu Jiaojiao shook her head. “Brother, I’m fine. It’s just that Grandmother…” Half a year ago, Grandmother had been diagnosed with late-stage cancer. The doctor said that they should try their best to satisfy the old lady’s wishes. That was why Father and Mother went to the Lu Family to bring forward the wedding date, because Grandmother was the most worried about her. Her only wish was to see her get married and start a family, and live a happy life. If Grandmother found out that Lu Zhuo had left during the wedding and the engagement was annulled, Lu Jiaojiao did not know if she would be able to hold on.

Xu Zhengyang also thought of the old lady’s condition, and his face darkened. Suddenly, he seemed to have thought of something and placed his hand on Xu Jiaojiao’s shoulder. “It’s alright, I have an idea.”

Xu Jiaojiao raised her head and looked at him. Xu Zhengyang solemnly promised, “Wait for me here for a while. I’ll find the best man in the world to marry you!” After saying that, he ran straight to the elevator without giving Xu Jiaojiao a chance to speak. He even took out his phone to make a call.

“Brother…” Xu Jiaojiao called out a few times, but she could not stop Xu Zhengyang. She did not know what he was going to do, but no matter what Xu Zhengyang wanted to do, today’s wedding was over. She had to inform her parents.

Xu Jiaojiao lifted her skirt and turned around. However, the effects of Lu Huan’s push still lingered. Just as she lost her balance and was about to fall, a slender and strong arm suddenly reached out from the side and held her firmly.

When Xu Jiaojiao straightened up, she took the opportunity to look at the man who had helped her. The first thing she saw was a handsome face with distinct facial features, exquisite and cold. The man was wearing a three-piece black suit. After making sure that Xu Jiaojiao had stabilized herself, he politely retracted his arm. His gaze did not linger on her for long before he left.

Just then, Xu Jiaojiao grabbed his sleeve. “Wait, wait a minute.”

Qi Shenbai furrowed his brows slightly, and a cold light flashed in his eyes as he turned to look at Xu Jiaojiao. Although she had exquisite makeup on and was wearing a wedding dress, Xu Jiaojiao’s appearance was too childlike.

When he saw her little round face, the size of his palm, Qi Shenbai felt that she was still underage. Her immaturity was the only impression Qi Shenbai had of Xu Jiaojiao. Perhaps it was because Xu Jiaojiao’s reddened eyes were too pitiful, like a stray cat drenched by the rain, but Qi Shenbai felt a rare sense of compassion and did not brush away her hand that was grabbing his sleeve.

“Thank you.” Xu Jiaojiao’s lips moved. She did not know why her heart was beating so fast, but her palms that were about to break out in a sweat as he held onto his sleeves.

“No worries.” Qi Shen’s thin lips parted slightly as he glanced at Xu Jiaojiao’s fingers that were tugging at his sleeve. They were as white as jade and as tender as tofu. His Adam’s apple inadvertently bobbed twice before he said, “Let go.”

However, Xu Jiaojiao did not let go. She knew Qi Shenbai. She did not know if it was because her brain was in a mess or because she had been provoked too much today, but a bold and absurd thought emerged in her mind. “Mr. Qi, will you marry me?”

Qi Shenbai’s black pupils suddenly contracted and his eyes widened in surprise. For a moment, he wondered if Xu Jiaojiao had lost her mind and was saying something crazy.

Xu Jiaojiao also knew that her words sounded ridiculous. Perhaps Qi Shenbai would think that she was a lunatic, but she had no choice.
