Chapter 144: Keeping Silly Xion Close
Xion thought he could sleep a bit longer, at least until the slight headache would leave him in peace.
Nonetheless, it did not take long for the door to be knocked again.
Xion directly rolled in the blanket, trying to cover his ears in the fluffiness of the pillow. But today was just not his day.
The knock became louder, and to Xion, it felt as if a hammer was being thrown on the wooden door.
Frustrated, he sat up with a frown. When he looked at the system screen, it had only been twenty minutes since Allen left.
What happened to two hours?
Complaining to himself, he still forced his body to rise from the bed. Barely had his bare feet touched the cold floor, the door was yanked open.
Who else could it be if not the owner of the house?
Nikolai was standing there. His face was tense, and with the way his eyes glared at Xion, it seemed as if Xion had tried to trick him into a sudden marriage.
"Tell me it is not true!" Nikolai did not even bother to put on a polite smile. His eyes were red at the edges, a telltale sign of his anger.
Xion, who barely got his brain working after waking up was even more irritated now.
Can people just say their lines properly without stopping in the middle?
Without understanding the heads and tails of the situation, Xion looked dead in Nikolia’s eyes and replied, "It is not true. Anything else?"
Nikolai ran a hand through his golden hair, messing the already tangled strands into complete disarray.
"You, and Darius. How can you two be together? He is lying. I am sure of it."
The prince might have mumbled even more if not for Xion stopping him.
He sat on the bed, covering his body with the duvet and yawned. "It’s true. He saved me and then I fell in love with him. After trying to impress him for almost a year, he agreed to be with me. Now you can leave."
Xion covered his head and closed his eyes again.
The room was silent, so quiet that Xion assumed that Nikolai had left.
If instead of falling asleep, Xion had looked around, he would have seen Nikolai glaring at smirking Darius.
Darius grabbed the prince by his collar and directly yanked him out of the room.
Only after making sure that the door was closed, Darius pinned the prince to the wall.
"Heard that? He likes me. He does not care if you are a prince or not, the only person who will marry him is me."
Darius felt a strange satisfaction when he saw Nikolai’s twisted face.
Sure enough, it was better to keep Xion for himself.
The Archduke showed his generosity and did not punch the prince in his face. As for his bruised stomach... it was Nikolai’s fault for coveting something that did not belong to him.
Oblivious to the chaos outside, Xion slept for almost an hour before waking up. Then, like a doll, he was dressed up properly in new attire and then directly taken to the carriage.
They were going to meet the king. Not in a banquet, or in a crowded place where Xion could slip away.
No, this was a face-to-face meeting, and Xion had no other choice than to sit still. And with the way his leg was bobbling up and down, it was proving very difficult.
Darius was calmly sitting on the other side as if he was not going to defy the king.
"So, I saved you and you fell for me? I did not expect that."
Xion’s leg stopped shaking, but that could not be said for his heart. His eyes slightly widened, "Why do you know that?"
Darius did not reply. Rather he leaned forward. His long fingers caressed Xion’s cheek. He enjoyed how just a mere touch could bring such a pretty color to Xion’s face.
Pink... It suits him.
"Let’s follow that story. I saved you from a scary... noble."
He purposely dragged out the word ’noble,’ watching in amusement as Xion avoided his gaze.
"Then, you fell for me," His fingers slid over the warm skin until they reached Xion’s ear. Tucking the now slightly longer black strands, he took his hand back.
"I fell for you because you saved me too. Then we decided to marry each other." Darius watched with a smile how those long black eyelashes fluttered as if in a daze.
When Xion snapped back to his senses, he tilted his head to the side, secretly rubbing his cheek that had been touched.
Strangely, Xion didn’t hate it when Darius was so close to him. Maybe it was the warmth of his hand or the steadiness in his gaze... but it wasn’t unpleasant. Even so, his mind buzzed with warning bells.
Don’t forget — he’s an archduke. He’s powerful, and you’re nothing.
Xion had to remind himself that this was the person who was only one year older than him. At least by his soul age, it was just one.
So, there was no need to be so flustered!
What was he doing being all shy by a mere touch?
Clearing his throat, he replied with mock seriousness, "Okay. Let’s follow that."
Darius’ smile only widened when he saw how despite looking so serious, those soft ears partially hidden under his hair were all red.
Darius felt his fingers twitching slightly. I want to pinch him... A thought lingered in his mind longer than it should have.
The carriage fell silent. Xion was busy holding his jumping heart back in his rib cage, while Darius was feeling strange giddiness.
Was it because of the prince’s arrogance? Or perhaps because for the first time in years, someone looked at him without any disgust and greedy calculation.
He couldn’t explain it but there was a sharp, gnawing need to keep Xion close.
And now he had finally found a way to bind Xion to his side. Hence, the archduke was feeling really elated.
