Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The prison’s rusty iron gate slowly opened, and out came a slow walking woman.
She could be seen holding on to a worn-out backpack tightly in her arms. Her shoulders were shrugged inward, and her head was lowered. As she walked, she respectfully bowed to every prison guard until she reached the exit of the prison gate.
Once out, a ray of sunlight shone on her body. The woman looked to the blue sky and had to shield her eyes with her hand to block the dazzling light. The prison guard’s advice echoed in her mind as she took her first step towards freedom. “Live your life as a good person and live well. Don’t go back to a life of crime.”
However, how could someone like her — who had been dragged into the abyss — be worthy of living well under the dazzling sun?
She was once the daughter of the Pei family that lived in Beijing. She had parents who loved her, a brother who doted on her, and a fiance who everyone wished they could marry. Unfortunately, everything she had at that time disappeared overnight.
A woman named Ling Xue suddenly appeared and revealed her identity during an event.
That night, she turned from a white swan, into an ugly duckling. She was exposed for being a sinner that stole more than 20 years of happiness from others.
Everyone blamed her for Ling Xue’s misery, but they never asked if she had a say in what happened.
“Pei Xin!” A familiar yet chilling voice sounded, drawing Pei Xin’s gaze from the sky back to the ground.
Pei Xin looked over and saw a sports car parked in the distance. A man was sitting in the driver’s seat. Although the man was wearing sunglasses, Pei Xin could easily identify the man in the driver seat. He was someone she called brother for more than 20 years, Pei Yu.
She never expected that her brother, who wished for her death, would come pick her up on the day she was released from prison.
Pei Xin tightened the backpack in her arms and carefully walked towards the sports car that was disgustingly flashy.
“H-hey bro…” She squeaked out with every ounce of energy she had in her.
“You don’t get to say that! You’re not worthy of being my sister!” Pei Yu took off his sunglassesto show that his eyes were filled with blatant disgust.
His stern tone made Pei Xin, who was standing beside the car, tremble unconsciously. She almost lost her balance and fell to the ground as tears welled up in her eyes.
“Mr. Pei, may I know the reason for your presence?” Pei Xin tried her best to compose herself and forced out a smile.
Pei Yu glared at the person in front of her and frowned slightly. “Ling Xue got into a car accident and she needs a kidney transplant. Come with me to the hospital. Now.”
Pei Xin’s breathing stopped when she heard Pei Yu’s implications. Was he asking her to donate her kidney to Ling Xue?
She looked at the person in front of her in disbelief. The brother who once said that he would protect her for the rest of her life was now asking her to give her kidney to someone else!
She refused to agree. Everyone knew that she had congenital heart disease. If she goes through with the surgery, she would definitely die.
She still had people to see and things to do. She had persevered for five years. She refused to die here!
“What’s the hold up? Hurry up and get in the car!” Pei Yu looked at Pei Xin standing motionlessly and had already lost his last drop of patience. If it wasn’t for the fact that he needed Pei Xin to be healthy and in one piece, he would have forcefully dragged her into the boot of the car.
Pei Xin nodded timidly and reached out to open the car door. Then, she took advantage of Pei Yu’s line of sight and quickly ran in the opposite direction of the car.
“This f*cking b*tch.” Pei Yu cursed in a low voice, opened his car door, and chased after her.
Although Pei Xin had a strong desire to live, her malnourished body caused her to feel dizzy after running a few steps. She had no choice but to slow down.
Pei Yu sprinted to her side, grabbed her hair without any care, and dragged her to her car.
Pei Xin’s tears welled from the pain. She grabbed Pei Yu’s hand tightly and tried to ease the pain. “I didn’t say that I would do it. What you’re doing is illegal. There are prison guards watching us. Aren’t you afraid of getting caught?!”
“Heh.” Pei Yu snorted coldly. “Did you learn nothing in prison these past five years? How can you still be this naive? In this city, I am above everyone else. No one would dare say anything against me. Look around, does it look like anyone is here to save you?”
What he said was true. In this capital, no one would dare offend the eldest son of the Pei family! Who in their right mind would? If she did, she wouldn’t have been bullied in prison for the five years she was imprisoned.
A surging sense of powerlessness instantly enveloped Pei Xin. Five years of prison life had taught her to beg for mercy and to shut up when necessary. She staggered but still followed Pei Yu into the car.
At the entrance of the hospital, the black sports car had garnered a lot of attention after the commotion.
Pei Yu opened the passenger door, grabbed Pei Xin’s arm, and pulled her inside.
Pei Xin’s thin body fell to the ground instead due to inertia. She seemed to be half-possessed and kept muttering the same thing to herself, “I don’t want to die. I don’t want to donate my kidney. Please, let me go. I’m sorry. I made a mistake.”
In a high-class private hospital, everyone who came and went here knew Pei Yu. The people who were enthralled by Pei Yu’s beauty were now filled with curiosity. They pointed fingers at Pei Yu, but no one came forward to stop her. All she did was mutter incoherent words to herself.
“Since you know you’re in the wrong, you should cooperate with us and let Ling Xue live a healthy and complete life.” A cold hand grabbed Pei Xin’s chin, interrupting the panicked rocking.
