Chapter 62: The Flames of Eternity
Chapter 62: The Flames of Eternity
"Good luck" was the last words Maximus heard before his surroundings changed from a cold cave with the sound of dripping water, to hot cave with a small lava river flowing on his right side.
The heat from the lava instantly hit him as he was wearing some armor which he brought from the system store for 40,000 system points.
The armor in question was called the Radiance of the Dawn and it granted a x2 boost to magic damage, and immunity to all damage debuffs (Poison, curses, etc.).

For weapons, he chose to use dual swords for a more offensive combat style allowing him to dish out more damage than he would receive. The two swords were called the 'Duskfang' and 'Dawnshear' and they increased his attack speed by 100% and critical hit chance by 50%. They cost 60,000 system points for both weapons.

The armor had no resistance against temperatures and the lava was so hot that he felt the heat through the armor. Not wanting to remain in the area. He started walking down the path in front of him.
After walking for a few minutes, he had arrived in a massive clearing which had arrived in a massive clearing where what looked like a volcanic arena awaited him. Jagged rocks and pillars surrounded the space, and in the distance, the air was filled with intense heat. The very ground beneath his boots trembled as though something was moving beneath the ground. The lava river to his right flowed with a slow current, with orange veins creeping through cracks in the surrounding terrain. He had to be careful where he stepped or else.
He also felt the heat pressing down on him from every direction, his armor barely offering any resistance. He tightened his grip around the hilts of his dual swords, Duskfang and Dawnshear, ready for anything that jumped out at him.
Suddenly, the ground split open, and from the massive opening emerged some type of beast, 'the Flames of Eternity' he said to himself.

A monstrous creature, with four legs, wings, a tail, and full engulfed in fire emerged. Its face glowed with a fiery, molten orange light, and wings of fire unfurled from its back. It had the face of a demon, its jagged teeth glowing with heat, its tail looked like another creature as it had a mouth as well. Lava glowed off its massive form at its feet and tail, hissing as it walked on the ground. The Flames of Eternity let out a thunderous roar that sent tremors through the air.
Maximus didn't flinch. His gaze locked onto the beast, and despite the overwhelming heat, he remained focused, his mind calm.
'Just got to survive,' he muttered to himself.
He coated his swords with a magic enhancement as he charged forward, his swords raised high. The speed boost from Dawnfang and Dawnshear allowed him to close the distance in the blink of an eye. The creature roared again, slamming its clawed hands against the stone ground, sending a shockwave of molten rocks flying in every direction. Maximus ducked and weaved through the debris, feeling the hot sting of falling rocks scrape against his armor. His senses were on high alert, and in a flash, he thought was out of the beast's field of vision, darting toward its exposed flank.
He swung Duskfang, the blade moving through the air before hitting the creature's side. The sword's edge met resistance, but it carved through its skin with ease. The beast howled in pain, spinning around with an insane level of speed for its size. Its fiery tail lashed out like a whip, crashing into Maximus' chest with enough force to send him skidding across the hot ground, just inches from the flowing lava.
His armor absorbed the impact, but he still felt the force of the blow. His heart raced, but he didn't hesitate. He got back on to his feet, flipping backward just as the beast unleashed a breath of lava from its mouth. Maximus darted to the side; his speed was enhanced by the dual swords' buffs. The lava hit the ground as it missed him by inches, but the heat alone was enough to make him sweat under his armor.
'Let's not get burned alive within the first few minutes,' Maximus joked trying to keep his attention focused on the matter at hand. He had been through years of training, but nothing prepared him for something like this.
The Flames of Eternity seemed to understand what Maximus was trying to do, as it stomped forward with a deafening roar. The ground quaked as it swung its massive fist down toward Maximus. Maximus ducked under the blow, feeling the heat radiate from the fist as it smashed into the ground behind him. He countered by leaping up and slashing with Dawnshear. The blade went into the creature's exposed arm, landing a critical strike.
The Flames of Eternity screeched and retaliated with an explosion of flames. The sheer force of the blast sent Maximus flying backward, his armor glowing as it absorbed most of the impact, but the sheer intensity of the fire still left him burned even through his armor. He landed hard, his vision blurring for a moment.
"Focus," he muttered to himself, shaking off the disorientation.
The creature's face glowed brighter now, like a giant ball of fury. The Flames of Eternity wasn't just fighting for dominance, it was fighting for its very existence. With another roar, it launched itself into the air, its fiery wings spreading wide as it hovered above the ground. It began to circle, its molten eyes searching for its prey.

Maximus knew what was coming.
From above, the Flames of Eternity began to rain down molten projectiles, each one the size of a boulder, hurling toward him with terrifying speed. Maximus' dashed to the side, narrowly avoiding the molten boulders. The ground around him was torn apart as the lava-like rocks exploded on impact, sending dozens of molten stone flying in all directions. His armor absorbed some of the heat from the explosions, but the force of the explosions was just too intense.
Maximus grunted as he moved between the flaming boulders. He was quick, but he couldn't keep dodging forever. He needed to end this quickly.
Tightening his grip on both swords, he charged forward, his swords held out in front of him. The Flames of Eternity's fiery tail swung down toward him, but he twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the strike. He leapt forward, his body propelled by the buffs from his swords, and with one move, he drove Duskfang into the creature's underbelly. The sword sunk deep, and for a moment, Maximus thought he might have struck a fatal blow.
But the creature's body was still moving, and with a howl, it flung him backward once again. The impact rattled his bones, but he pushed himself back to his feet as his super-healing kicked in. The creature was weakening, he could feel it.
Stepping back as the creature struggled to stand tall, its molten skin falling off, revealing the core beneath its molten armor. It was dying, and he could finish it now.
With a battle cry, he dashed forward one last time, running on the creature's tail. The creature's last defense was weak, and Maximus' final strike, two slashes in rapid succession, tore through the creature's molten armor, carving deep into its core. The beast let out a final roar as the lava around it erupted in an explosion.
This time Maximus planted his two swords into the ground and held his position. As the smoke cleared, the creature's massive form crumbled into smoldering rock and ash. The air was filled with the stench of burned flesh, while Maximus stood there, breathing heavily as he was victorious. He completed the first trial and had three more to go.
The Flames of Eternity was no more.
The Goddess didn't waste any time and teleported him to his next trial. Now he was in the same situation as before with new surroundings all around him. He knew this was going to be a challenge, but this was a little overkill. No breaks between fights, his body might be fine, but his mind might not without proper rest. So, he decided to sit down for about half an hour before his next fight.
