Chapter 208: Only an idiot would not know
That unexpected guest that had come to visit her was none other than Su Guozhai. Jing Lihua could not think of the reasons behind his sudden visit. "Did Captain Su want me for something?" However, her tone was polite.
And that politeness was not fake. This man had looked after her mother before her. Not only that, when she was little he was among the few people whom she considered friends. Even though he had her archenemies 'Su' surname attached to his name, she could tell that he was different. She had a pretty good impression of him.
"Nothing, I came here for a game of chess." said Su Guozhai, "Last time you agreed we could have one in the future. Although I easily defeated you, I like being fair and give my competitors a chance." He assumed an air of a champion with a magnanimous heart.
Jing Lihua was provoked at his pompous tone. "As if... I told that day I was distracted. That was the reason I lost to you." She was not the one who would admit her defeat.
"That's what they all say," laughed Su Guozhai.
"You know I am not making excuses like others."
"Hmm... I can know that if we try a match right now."
"But...I am rather busy. How about this? After I finish my work, Captain Su can come to my apartment?" She was not stalling with excuses. The mall opening was giving her a headache. At the same time, she was trying her best to find out what schemes Su Liwei had that Chen Yuefang had warned them about.
"Why at your response, I am not surprised? I am used to hearing this excuse being said to me by my subordinates as a means to avoid losing." Su Guozhai pretended to regretfully shake his head. "Such a pity. You were a good match. I actually thought you would have a minuscule chance of winning against me."
That statement hit someone'es nerve.
"I-That was not an excuse, alright!" Jing Lihua glared. What did he mean by minuscule chance? She acknowledges his skills in chess but if that day she was really distracted because of Su Donghai! If she exerts a little bit of effort, she was certain she would defeat him, okay!
"There is only one way to prove." Su Guozhao smiled brightly. His bright eyes challenged her.
"Fine. Just one match it is. No big deal." That was what she had thought.
Su Guozhai laughed. It appeared he knew her temperament too well. With his words, he effortlessly managed to persuade her into a match. And even Jing Lihua, as a great schemer she was, did not realize this. She even skipped to take note that how unusual it was for him to visit her out of sudden.
How would Su Guozhai not know how to coax her? After all, she inherited her temperament from her mother. Thinking about Tang Yuyan, Su Guozhai's eyes warmed.
Ignoring the work that had pil
ed up in her office, Jing Lihua asked Mei Xiu to bring a chessboard. However, to her surprise, Su Guozhai said he had brought one with himself.
"Captain Su, you were this confident that I would agree for this match that you even brought your board?" Jing Lihua's eyes widened in surprise. She seemed to realize something.
"Wasn't my confidence precise?"
Only at this point, Jing Lihua realized that she had been so easily tricked into his will. Of course, she was enraged. But she had already agreed to the match. She could not back out now. Furthermore, she intended to direct her anger on the game and make this confident man taste the sweetness of defeat.
Slamming the board over the table, a heated match of chess game initiated.
'Hah! Captain Su thinks I, the great President Jing, can be defeated so easily? I will let him see how much he has underestimated me.'
A few minutes later...
"There goes Captain's Queen." Jing Lihua said with smug expressions. However before a smile even made its way to her face, Su Guozhai had already made his move.
"Checkmate." He said. Then he looked up at Jing Lihua. "Indeed, you have lasted longer than before. You have improved. Have you been practicing during your free time?" He asked seriously.
Jing Lihua's expressions didn't look very well. She was silent for a while. "I-I just got careless for a second." She made an attempt to justify her failure.
Failure...
No, she didn't like the sound of this.
"I had just come back after reviewing the files. So it was only fair I got careless. Let's play another round. I am certain I would easily win this time!" Jing Lihua was determined. Her green eyes sparked with resolve.
"Are you sure? I assumed as the President you must be very busy." Su Guozhai chuckled lightly.
"I am a hundred percent sure!"
And so a spiral of matches had started. Between the matches, they had slipped into a pleasant conversation. Jing Lihua acutely glanced up at the man who was totally inconceivable for her. What she was certain was that he meant her no harm.
'There is no reason he came here to just play chess with me. He must have some other motives too.'
'As to know those motives, I will have to wait and see for myself.'
To test the waters, she said. "Does Captain Su know that during the will hearing of the Elder Heng, other than Heng Fu and Heng Bingwen, there was another blood-related heir?" She asked casually.
Since this Captain Guozhai shared a special relationship with her mother when she was alive, he ought to know that she was a Heng. Shouldn't he?
If he
wasn't aware of this detail then Jing Lihua could establish that his bond with her mother never reached that point of intimacy.
Although she thought so, she didn't have much hope that he would be aware of this.
The event at the will hearing was kept a perfect secret. She was certain that even Su Donghai and Su Liwei were not aware. If they knew, exploiting that secret, they would have long ago made a move against her.
"Why are you trying to sound so mysterious?" Su Guozhao shrugged. "Elder Heng's wife was renowned for her unique green eyes. Only an idiot would not realize that you were not related to them."
Jing Lihua: "..."
