Chapter 644: Unusual occurence - Part 1

The medical staff, who had arrived after almost everything had been taken care of, started with their job. Since Ian and his men had done most of the work, he now had nothing to do and he did not wish to do anything either. He was drained and his aching legs were killing him. All he wanted was to lie down and hibernate for months.

But he could not do so since he had promised Maggie to look for Preston. Ian looked at the chaotic scene in front of him. Most of the men had been rescued and the doctors were treating them. Only a few were remaining and his men were doing a great job at helping them.

Amidst the unfamiliar faces, Preston was nowhere to be seen. Ian walked around the destroyed area, keeping his eye open for a familiar face. He even circled the port twice, forcing his aching legs to exercise more when he did not find Preston anywhere.

Ian's eyes narrowed and an ominous feeling settled in his heart. All of a sudden, a strange kind of suffocation filled him and he felt unbelievably distressed. His left eye started to twitch and Ian clasped his hands tight as he tried to suppress the uncomfortable feeling.

But as time passed, the sensation only increased and Ian was frustrated beyond measure. He did not know why he was feeling this way, nor did he know what made him feel this way. All he knew was that something was wrong and whatever it was was related to Preston.

After failing hard to control his distraught emotions, he stared at the wreaked building and after thinking for some time, he started searching for the missing man around it. Even though the chances of finding Preston alive there were less, he did not give up and tried to find a way inside.

It was impossible for him to enter easily. The building was in ruins and it resembled nothing less than a giant pile of bricks and fragments. Heck, it did not even look like it had once been a building. The once tall structure had crumbled to pieces and Ian felt a headache coming as he thought of the longest day that was yet to come to an end.

He would need a lot of people to even lift the fragments first. Searching for Preston here, alone, was like.....wishing to capture a star in the night sky. And the horrible part was that even if he or anyone else for that matter managed to find Preston, he could not guarantee that the man would not be squashed to death, considering how wreaked the building was.

On seeing Ian standing idly as he stared at the ruins, one of his men rushed to him and stood beside him. "Doctor Davis, is something the matter?" He queried politely and looked at the man silently. To him, the doctor beside him was more frightening than his other two bosses.

Although Noah was cold and taciturn which was his nature, they were already accustomed to his behavior and actions and Joshua....Behind his smile, he was a devil and all the men in the base knew it. However, it was Ian who had scared the shit out of them. Very rarely did he participate in matters related to the base. But once he did, he would show them what he was capable of and the man had seen his demonic side when Ian had handled Marcus, the man who had shot Noah previously.

"Did you get the list of all the people from the Intelligence who had participated in the mission today?" Ian questioned back, his eyes not leaving the wreckage in front of him.

"Yes, Doctor Davis. I did." The man's reply was instant.

"How many have we rescued?"

"Doctor Davis, we have rescued everyone among them, everyone but one. The remaining people are all from Jared's gang."

Ian's heart dropped as soon as he heard the man and his eyes dilated for a moment. One man....The only man waiting to be rescued? It had to be Preston for he was the only missing and Ian gritted his teeth when the feeling of suffocation surfaced again.

"Have we checked everywhere?" Ian continued, although he knew the answer to it himself.

"Yes, Doctor Davis. Everywhere except...." The man stopped and Ian turned to him when he sensed his hesitation.

"Except?"

"Here." The man pointed to the ruins and Ian let out a sigh. "But there are high chances that he is not here too."

"What do you mean?" Ian's brows quirked up before he narrowed his eyes, intrigued by his words. Google search 𝑓𝒓e𝑒w𝑒𝒃𝑛𝒐𝘃ℯ𝙡. c𝚘m

"Doctor Davis, according to one of the officers of the Intelligence, all of them, at least the people from their team had made it out of the building before the bomb exploded. So, I do not think the man got caught here....in this mess."

Ian pursed his lips as he thought through it. 'If Preston had already left the building before it exploded, then it was impossible for him to get caught underneath it. In that case, he has to be somewhere here. But....' Ian ran his eyes around him keenly, scrutinizing the place thoroughly. 'Why is he not here?'

Ian pressed his tongue on the inside of his cheek and he folded his hands. Something was definitely fishy here, he could sense it. But he did not know what.

The man beside him instinctively took a step back when he notice Ian's grave expression.

"I will have to speak to Ryder about it," Ian muttered as his forehead creased into a frown.

Although Valerie was the best choice to consult about the matter for she and Preston had been the last ones to leave the building, Ian could not go to her now, considering her situation. So, he could only settle for the second-best choice.

Ryder was waiting for Maggie to return with Preston's news. But even after a long time, the woman was nowhere in sight and his mind started to conjure the worst of the things. He was now scared for Preston. So, the moment he saw Ian, he held his hands and gazed at him hopefully.

"Doctor, did you find Preston? Did you find him? Is he fine? Where is he?"
