Chapter 666: Pathway to the future

Chapter 666: Pathway to the future

"Do not worry. Noah, Ian and Joshua are doing well." Jonathan hesitated for a moment before he decided to come clean.

"Yes, Master. And Master, did you say that Oliver is Noah's father-in-law, or did I hear it wrong?"

Jonathan let out a hearty chuckle after listening to his amusing words.

"Noah and Joshua are in a relationship and soon, there will be weddings in my family."

"Wow."

Jonathan heard the other man exclaim in happiness and surprise and his lips arched in joy. Although he did not like the precarious situation he was in, he was nevertheless ecstatic whenever he thought about his grandchildren and the life partners they had chosen for themselves.

While Rachel would definitely be happy with Daniel, there was no doubt that with Aria, Noah would undoubtedly lead a blissful life. Jonathan had no complaints whatsoever and he could even die in happiness. He had everything he needed in life.

'I just wish my children will not despise me for my past. Just...please.' He prayed silently, giving a deaf ear to what the other man on the phone was saying in reply.

"Master....are you there? Master?"

When Jonathan heard the man's repeated questions with a slightly raised voice, he came out of his trance and shook his head lightly.

"I am here." He mumbled and let out a sigh. "I'm here. And I think there is something you might be interested in knowing."

"What is it, Master?"

Jonathan heard the man's eager voice and his mood improved gradually. "The ladies who our children are in a relationship with are both Oliver's daughters."

"What?" The man became agitated all of a sudden and Jonathan at that moment wished to fly over and see the man's gobsmacked expression in person. How amazing it would be, he thought.

"Are you astonished?"

"Very much, Master. How coincidental it is that Noah and Joshua fell in love with Oliver's daughters. Master..." The man went silent all of a sudden and Jonathan discerned what he would be asking him next. His change in tone said it all. Yet, he waited for him to voice his thoughts.

"Do you think the ladies approached Noah and Joshua with a motive?" He asked skeptically and held his breath, worried that his words would annoy Jonathan.

"No. The ladies are innocent. I would not have allowed them to even get close to our children if they had any ill intentions." Jonathan disagreed and heard the man let out a sigh of relief. "They are sincere and love our sons as much Noah and Joshua love them."

"That's good, Master. That's good. I am happy for them. Really." The man choked and Jonathan understood his emotions right away. He was overwhelmed with joy and he too got carried away and forgot his problems for the time being.

"I just wish I could attend and watch their weddings in person. Just..."

A heavy silence fell on the two men as they lost themselves to darkness and fear. It was the path they had chosen and now, they had no choice but to accept it and continue to tread on it.

"How about Ian, Master? Has the child found anyone special? I am worried about him the most. He has been living a lonely life all this time and other than his friends, he has no one else in his life. I just wish he finds someone who would give him all the love he deserves."

"Do not worry. Ian will get his happiness. He is a fine man and he is bound to find someone who will treasure him and cherish him for life. I will make sure of it." Jonathan promised and wiped the tears that were rolling down his cheeks.

"Thank you, Master. Thank you so much and do not worry, Master. I will complete the task you have assigned me."

"I will call you after a week. Until then.." Jonathan ended the call and stood up slowly. Clutching his walking stick tight, he dragged his body towards the window and looked out.

Even though it was a bright and happy day, his mood was unbelievably melancholic and nothing could make him get out of it. He could not stop fearing what the future held for him and how his past would affect him.

Noah worshipped him. Jonathan knew it and he now, he had broken his trust, destroyed it totally. His past was a nightmare the old Carter wanted to forget and hide from everyone, especially his grandson.

"I am sorry, Noah. I am sorry for not being the man you assumed me to be all your life. I am really sorry. If possible, please forgive me. But I cannot allow you to learn the truth. I cannot see you despising me. I am sorry for what I am doing and for what I will be doing in the future. For your happiness and your future, it is best that the secret remains a secret forever."

Jonathan closed his eyes and steeled his heart. The next time, his eyes opened, they were devoid of any sadness. Instead, they were filled with determination and purpose and he returned to his seat.

Picking up his phone, he dialed a number. He now had an important job to complete and he had to get it done quickly.

"Samuel, I have an urgent matter to discuss with you." He did not beat around the bush and informed his son the moment he picked up the phone. "Come to the mansion when you are free and bring Hailey with you."

Samuel was surprised by his father's phone call and he looked at his phone in wonder. "What is it about, Dad? Is something the matter?"

"Nothing. I just think it's time we discuss about Rachel and her future."

"What happened to her, Father? Is she..."

"I will tell you everything once you are here." Jonathan was not avert to the mishap his granddaughter had faced a day ago and it was one of the many reasons which had prompted him to listen to Noah.

"And to put your mind at ease, it's about her marriage."
