Chapter 29: Chapter 29 Settle Down_1

After brewing the medicine, Liyan carefully fed a full bowl of it to Grandfather Li, and it must have been effective because in just half an incense stick’s time, Lizhong woke up.

Seeing Mo Yan, Lizhong was very excited and struggled to get up, but was stopped by Mo Yan’s voice.

"Grandfather Li, don’t rush, lie down and rest for a while longer. We can talk about everything once we get home."

Lizhong, having no strength, had no choice but to lie back down, his face full of shame: "I’ve, I’ve troubled Miss Mo again!"

Mo Yan shook her head: "Grandfather Li, our families share a bond forged through adversity, there’s no need for formalities! But for Yanzi’s sake, you must also take good care of yourself."

Lizhong nodded with teary eyes, and upon seeing his granddaughter happily shedding tears at the side, a smile crept onto his lips: "Good child, Grandpa is fine now, don’t cry!"

The grandfather and grandson talked softly as Mo Yan quietly left the clinic and hailed a horse cart from the street. Since the clinic was a distance from the Mo Family home, and Grandfather Li’s body was frail, he obviously couldn’t walk far.

After paying for the consultation and the medicine, Mo Yan and Liyan helped Lizhong into the horse carriage, and they all returned home together.

Zhenzhen and Xin Er were overjoyed to see Grandfather Li and Sister Yanzi after such a long time. Knowing that Grandfather Li was sick and needed to rest quietly, they also wisely refrained from speaking loudly.

With only two rooms and two beds in the house, Mo Yan had no choice but to temporarily arrange for Lizhong to stay in the larger room belonging to her father and brother, planning to buy another bed and quilt from the market after lunch.

Lying on the bed, Lizhong saw a desk and bookshelves at the bedside, and knew that this was Mo Qingze’s room, the head of the household. Now that he was lying in the homeowner’s bed, he felt very uneasy.

"Miss Mo, you’ve already gone to great lengths for the two of us. Just find us any place that can keep us sheltered from the rain."

"Grandfather Li, please make yourself comfortable here. We will add another bed later, which will be sufficient for everyone."

Mo Yan could easily discern the old man’s unease. The whole house only had two rooms, and although there was a small storage room in the yard, it was too narrow and dark, hardly suitable for a patient to live in, and she had never considered leaving someone in there. The master bedroom was quite spacious, and if she bought a bed to place by the west window, and then pulled a curtain in the middle, it wouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience.

Seeing that Mo Yan was resolute, Lizhong couldn’t say much more, his heart filled with gratitude and shame. He couldn’t help but think of his missing daughter and wondered if she would meet a kind-hearted person to take her in. Tears of sorrow streamed down his face, overcome with grief.

Mo Yan and Liyan, fearing his emotions would fluctuate too much and worsen his condition, took a good while to comfort him and finally managed to calm Lizhong down. However, Mo Yan knew it was only temporary. As long as his daughter Lixiu remained missing, the old man wouldn’t truly be happy.

Seeing that it was getting late, Mo Yan asked Liyan and Zhenzhen to stay and keep the old man company, while she went to the kitchen with Xin Er to prepare lunch.

Considering that the grandfather and granddaughter from the Li Family hadn’t had a full meal in half a month, their stomachs must be very weak. Thus, Mo Yan decided to make easy-to-digest dumplings and cornbread.

Last night’s chicken soup still had half left over, and Mo Yan, worried that it might spoil overnight, had hung it in the well to keep it cold. Now, it was just right for making the base of the dough drop soup.

She poured flour for four servings into a clay basin, mixed it with water using chopsticks, and set it aside to rest. Mo Yan then took out another clay basin and mixed corn flour with a small amount of wheat flour and water. Once the corn dough became sticky, she shaped it into thin round pancakes. freewebnσvel.cѳm

By the time the dough was ready, Mo Yan poured the chicken soup into the cooking pot. She let Xin Er stoke the fire, and when the pot was hot enough, she started to cook the corn pancakes. As soon as one side of the pancakes was ready to flip, the soup in the other pot began to boil. She poured in the dough drops, stirred them with chopsticks to separate them, then covered the pot and left it alone. Once the dough drops were cooked, all of the corn pancakes were ready as well.

For the meal, she stir-fried her homemade small sauce meat to accompany the rice and made a refreshing cold dish with sugar tomatoes. After setting everything on the table, Mo Yan and Liyan helped Lizhong get out of bed to join them for the meal.

Although the meal was simple, Lizhong had lived long enough to experience much of the warmth and coldness of human relations and could clearly see Mo Yan’s sincerity. He felt a profound sense of gratitude but chastised himself for his weakness and for causing so much trouble for the Mo Family.

The ingredients for the dough drops and corn pancakes came directly from Space, and coupled with Mo Yan’s superb cooking skills, they were exceptional in taste. Lizhong, who usually had little appetite, found himself growing hungrier the more he ate. Had he not been aware of his weak stomach and the need to eat in moderation, he might have asked for another two bowls.

Liyan felt the same way, and it was only with Grandfather Li’s reminder that she reluctantly put down her chopsticks and bowl.

Seeing that Grandfather Li had a good appetite brought some relief to Mo Yan. As long as he could eat, she thought that talking things through and resolving his worries would eventually lead to his recovery.

After the meal, they helped Grandfather Li back to bed to rest. Liyan insisted on doing the dishes and cleaning the house. Knowing it would make her feel more uneasy not to help, Mo Yan didn’t refuse. She sent the two little ones to keep Lizhong company while she went back to her room, took some Silver Coins, and headed out to the streets to buy a bed and quilts.

Beds of this era were made of solid wood and finished with tung oil for water and insect resistance, making them very durable. Mo Yan didn’t choose anything fancy for her father and brother, spending One Or Two Pieces Of Silver on a slightly cheaper big bed.

The shop in town offered free home delivery, so after giving them the address, Mo Yan went to buy quilts. It was already past the start of autumn, and the weather was getting cooler by the day; as expected, quilt prices had risen. Previously, a new cotton quilt and an old cotton quilt would cost Eight Hundred Fifty Wen, but now they were One Or Two Silver.

After some haggling and because she was a returning customer, she managed to get two quilts for Nine Hundred Fifty Wen. Mo Yan asked the shop assistant to deliver them, and seeing she was a regular customer, he readily agreed.

Mo Yan touched the copper coins remaining in her purse and sighed helplessly. The more than Two Silver she had earned from selling eggs in half a month was almost entirely spent. Fortunately, there was daily income, so she didn’t need to worry about money for the moment.

After going to the Cloth Shop and spending all her copper coins on a piece of rough cotton for the curtains, Mo Yan walked back home, content with her purchases.

When Mo Qingze arrived home at night and learned of the Li Family’s unfortunate ordeal, he was deeply moved. He praised Mo Yan for bringing them home, not showing the slightest hesitation on his face.

Seeing that the head of the household had no objections, Lizhong and his granddaughter finally let go of their last worries and settled down comfortably, both silently swearing to repay the kindness of the Mo Family one day.

And that night, Mo Yan, while working again in Space, unexpectedly discovered that two more red lines had appeared on the transparent bead...
