Chapter 80: Live Broadcast

“Sure, let’s go together.”

After saying this, Bai Yan shot a glance at Xu Lanfang, the young girl didn’t seem against the idea of these people offering her help.

Xu Lanfang just said “Whatever,” and pulled her small cart forward. Bai Cui distributed two burlap bags to Bai Yan and Ye Shangyu, then the three people went to the field where Xu Lanfang was headed.

Behind the four people, Fang Niu held his phone up, filming his girlfriend cautiously and conscientiously, and giving the four a feature in the live broadcast.

Soon, the group had reached the farmland, and the property of Xu Lanfang’s house was in front.

Due to the app’s restrictions, the players weren’t allowed to step a foot beyond the scope of the stone tablet, but coincidentally, Xu Lanfang’s family’s land was within the stone tablet’s range, so this was still counted as being inside the ‘ghost village.’

On the yellow earthy ground, there was a pile of straws and maize cobs rounded up to form a small hill. This was firewood of Xu Lanfang’s family.

Xu Lanfang set her cart at the side, grabbing a burlap sack and starting to shove the maize cobs into her pouch.

[Almond Cat: Anchor! There’s a ghost!]

[Almond Cat: There’s a dead person’s head inside the pile of straw! I saw it, I really saw it!]

On the phone, there was a cold robotic voice narrating these two comments from the stream.

After listening to the contents of the comments, Bai Cui feigned alarm and said, “Really? Don’t you guys even think of tricking me! The same trick won’t fool me twice. Sister Bai is too smart for that!”

Bai Cui’s ‘trembling’ mouth hardened from this sentence, while her ‘honest’ body turned her head.

As for Fang Niu who was filming the entire scene, he correspondingly shifted his camera shot to the small hill of straws.

There was nothing there other than a pile of straws, and other than the wind blowing a slight breeze, you couldn’t find anything there.

[Almond Cat: Anchor! Quickly look, the human head has appeared!]

[White Elephant Pure Fruit: …Is this a joke? Are you intentionally trying to scare the anchor? The newcomer’s expression is a bit incomprehensible!]

[You Don’t Understand: Eh, little sister’s scaring technique is too fake. Super embarrassing. Sister Bai would never be frightened.]

[Almond Cat: How could that be? Can’t you all see it? I’m not scaring her on purpose, it’s true!

There really is a huge human head, and it’s being hung by the straws. There’s a straw that’s passing through the head’s mouth, causing it to suspend in mid-air. You really can’t see the head? You all shouldn’t scare me!]

[Ghost Girl Comes Knocking At Your Door: Hahaha, little sister speaks so earnestly. What a drama queen… Hehe, actually, I can also see it.]

Hearing the monotonous robot voice saying these, one after another, Bai Cui felt speechless. The one thing that her audience liked doing the most was to scare her.

Naturally, since she was a seasoned anchor, she wouldn’t fall for this scary scheme. Instead, she tried her best to choke out a chuckle, “Followers, don’t play jokes. I won’t believe you. Okay, since little sister has already bundled the pouches together, this anchor won’t entertain the chat anymore, we’ll be heading back!”

[Almond Cat: Anchor, I truly am not kidding.]

The ice-cold robotic voice came through. This led Bai Cui to be a bit fed up, feeling that this joke(1) still wasn’t tired of playing.

Refers to Almond Cat in this context.

However, soon, Bai Cui became vexed for the first time, because Almond Cat suddenly posted another comment——

[Almond Cat: Wait, anchor, how did this head run in front of you? I completely can’t see your faces anymore! It became huge, already taking up half of my screen!]

“Ah? I don’t see any ghosts in front of me now.” Bai Cui looked left and right, smiling as she asked, “Brother Bai, Sister Ye, do you see anything?”

“We don’t.” Bai Yan put on a fitting smile, but his heart was secretly taking precautions.

Bai Cui might be assuming that the audience is pulling a prank on her, but he knew that ghosts truly existed in Yanglan village.

This audience member insisted on seeing a head. Maybe there really was a floating head before them.

But, why was it that only this audience member could see, while the others can’t?

As Bai Yan pondered on it, he continued to walk without changing directions, not even moving his head to dodge.

Although there could possibly be a head in front of him, no one else reacted. If he had particularly avoided and also been conspicuous about it, the ghost might fix its attention onto him. So, it was better to act like he didn’t know anything.

After a few more jokes, everyone continued on their way.

Fang Niu was still walking at the very back, faithfully capturing the four’s images to broadcast on the stream.

However, before they could walk far, that Almond Cat that made trouble for Bai Cui came back again.

[Almond Cat: Anchor, did you intentionally put special effects in your stream? The head has already taken up my entire screen. Right now, I can only see the live comment section…]

[Almond Cat: HELP]

“This follower, have you heard the story called ‘The Ghost Has Come’? Sometimes, after you’ve been telling a lie for a long time, even if you say the truth, no one will believe you!” Bai Cui said, “I have to say, you’re the most creative viewer I’ve ever seen. If it weren’t for you trying to scare me over and over again, I would have taken you seriously.”

Bai Cui finished speaking, and the live comments were filled with laughing messages. All kinds of ‘666’ (2) emerged, the atmosphere turning harmonious.

“You’re doing amazing sweetie,” 666 (pinyin: liùliùliù) represents 溜溜溜 (pinyin: liùliùliù); or smooth/slick (comes from Chinese gaming slang, where gamers would put ‘666’ in the chat after seeing another showing an impressive skill) from Wikipedia. During Bai Cui and the audience’s interaction, Bai Yan walked behind, keeping an eye on the sounds coming out of the phone.

Just as expected, after typing the last comment, Almond Cat also didn’t appear anymore.

Bai Yan felt that this viewer called ‘Almond Cat’ must already be murdered.

‘She must have thought wrong. That head probably wasn’t in front of us, rather, it was on Almond Cat’s screen! It stealthily approached Almond Cat’s screen, and when it completely filled her view, Almond Cat was killed.’

‘Did this ghost conceal itself in Almond Cat’s computer? Or, could it kill people through the live broadcast? Was it really hidden in the straw? When Almond Cat saw the live stream, could it have used the live stream to jump through space, arriving at Almond Cat’s place to kill the viewer?’

Bai Yan’s brain conjured up many theories, but because of the three NPCs with them, he temporarily couldn’t discuss it with Ye Shangyu.

Since placing the four full bags on the cart made it heavy, even if the wheels reduced the heaviness, it was still a difficult task for a small girl like Xu Lanfang.

So, Ye Shangyu offered her a hand, greatly lightening her burden.

When everyone reached the half-way point, the time had already reached six o’clock.

The sky was gradually turning dark, and the sporadic lights in the village were lit up.

From a distance, everyone saw four people walking over. They were the four other players that had scouted for information.

However, Bai Yan didn’t have the time to call them when the robotic voice attracted his attention.

[The Sky Is Very Dark: Anchor! Followers! Please save me, call the police! I saw a ghost!]

“Wa, it’s dusk, could you please not say such frightening things? Sister Bai is so scared.” Bai Cui hugged herself and ‘trembled,’ saying, “Today’s followers sure love telling stories. Do you not like Sister Bai anymore? How could you create stories to scare me? If scared again, Sister Bai will let you see her cry!”

[Love Me, Remarry Me: 2333 Sister Bai should cry and let us see. I’m looking forward to Sister Bai crying! (Exposes a perverted smile)]

[Fishbone-Fearing Cat: WTF! This time, I’m really not lying! Sister Bai, don’t look back! Behind you, there’s…]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: Fellow followers, I’m not joking. Please call the police. My home address is ‘Chun Xie City, Shandong Region, Shui Bo Road, Hua Yuan District 2, House Number 403,’ there’s a person standing in front of my house’s door. I’m freaking scared. Please save me!]

“…Really? Calling the police is no laughing matter. Filing a false police report would result in the person to be legally liable!” Bai Cui changed into a drama queen, adding in a grave tone, “I’m an honorable anchor. Speak truthfully, little sister, some jokes can’t be used so casually!”

[The Sky Is Very Dark: All that I’m saying is true!!! My cell phone number is 154xxxxxxxx. My name is Luo Xiaoyi. I’m a graduate of Green Ocean University. You all can check online! My phone can’t connect to a call to the police, my mom, my friends… Everyone isn’t answering! No one even replied to my texts! Only in the live broadcast, I can send live comments!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: I know that this matter is hard to believe, but just a moment ago, while I was watching the live stream, a delivery man suddenly knocked on my house’s door, saying that my delivery had arrived!

However, I haven’t recently purchased anything, so I told him through the door that it was a wrong delivery!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: I’ve yelled this a couple of times, but the delivery man argued for me to open the door, his voice was getting louder and louder, causing me to feel intimidated. At that time, I realized that something was wrong, so I took a look at the peephole to see what was outside, and I saw that the delivery man was standing outside, smiling! His smile was eerie as if he knew that I was looking at him!

I was so scared that I didn’t dare open the door, a bit shaken. Who would’ve expected that he would suddenly remove his own head and stick his eye into the peephole!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: I was absolutely terrified, so I hurriedly ran back to my room and locked the bedroom door. Then, I could hear ‘dong dong dong’ sounds from door-knocking. It didn’t seem like he was using his fist to knock on the door, but instead, he used his head to pound on it!]

[‘The Sky Is Very Dark’ tipped a chicken wing* 10,000!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: PLEASE, ANCHOR, CALL THE POLICE. THIS IS ALL OF MY MONEY, SAVE ME! CALL THE POLICE!!!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: HE’S COMING IN! HE’S COMING IN!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: HE’S STARTING TO POUND ON MY BEDROOM DOOR!]

[The Sky Is Very Dark: SAVE ME!]

[Sister Loves Horror: Anchor! There seems to be something inside my pillow! I was holding my pillow while watching your broadcast, but my pillow suddenly twisted around. I felt it and sensed that something was amiss! A piece inside is protruding! Is my house haunted too?]

“…Are you guys serious?”

Seeing the successive comments as well as the various large tips, Bai Cui felt rather torn, so much so that she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. These followers were also too good at keeping up the act. Who would ask for help to call the police from being haunted by ghosts.

Although this ‘The Sky Is Very Dark’ comments appeared urgent, Bai Cui felt that this was her still playing the joke. If she really wanted to call the police, she should directly say that there was a person banging on her door. Why would she insist on mentioning a ghost?
