Chapter 13: Going to the Front Lines (1)

I’m sorry but I refuse…

Refuse? Did Peggy Carter hear that right? Refuse?

Hearing Kyle’s crisp reply, Peggy felt her head grow dizzy. Her usual cold and calm demeanor cemented on her face expressed an uncertainty of surprise. “Why? This is what recruits here dream of.”

Kyle smiled unwittingly. Slowly stretching out his fingers, he said in a relaxed tone, “First, this is still, after all, an experiment. I can’t help thinking the possibility of failure. Though the probability of it may be low, I do believe I can become the best and most outstanding soldiers without the use of the serum.”

Then, he drew his hands out and extended out two fingers. “Second… this is also the most important point.”

“What is it?” Peggy questioned. For the first time, she had a strong sense of curiosity.

“Though I refuse to participate in the experiment, I can at least recommend a person, right? If so, I choose Steve. He has the potential. I hope you’ll think of him as well.”

… … …

Coming out of the barracks, Peggy found herself in a state of trance.

In her view, she thought it a great chance for Kyle to become the first super soldier known to man. His story would be written down in the annals of history. Why would he willingly give it up for his friend, Steve? She’s not sure whether to call his action foolish or awe inspiring.

She sighed. “At least the Super Soldier Program will commence tomorrow.”

… … …

Inside the barracks, Kyle rummaged through the collections of green skill card he extracted from Peggy earlier on when suddenly, the door popped open and a thing figure rushed in.

Without raising his head, Kyle already knew who it was. “Steve, why are you in such a hurry?”

“Kyle, why?!” Steve rushed over and shouted exasperatedly, his face full of puzzlement. “Why did you give me the qualification seat to be chosen for the program?!”

“Oh, back so soon?”

“Dr. Abraham Erskine came and told me…”

“Tomorrow, you’ll leave the barracks and go to a secret laboratory. Isn’t it good? It’s a good opportunity to turn your life around. If you can become the Super Soldier, you’ll be able to do great things.” Kyle smiled softly.

“Of course, that’s a given. It could have been yours!” Steve said harshly.

“You don’t need to ask why. Ihis benefits you more than me.” Kyle answered.

He would never tell his reasons for confining Steve to participate in the program.

So long as he has the skill cards, he could easily extract the abilities of others without the pose of risk existing. Though the serum would lead to a success when on Steve, it did not necessarily guarantee that it’d work on others. Besides, there also exists the possibility that he’d end up like the Red Skull — hideous and monstrously ugly.

And without Captain America, the main line of the plot would only lead to further chaos which he did not want to happen.

“If you want to thank me, go and become the greatest soldier in my stead. Don’t let me down.” Kyle smiled sincerely and patted Steve’s shoulder.

You go fight… and then when you come back, let me steal your skill. Coughs… think of this as a profitable investment…

Teaser Chapter

The next morning.

Steve packed his personal belongings and left the training base covertly. None of the recruits knew of his newly classified mission. Only Kyle knew the Super Soldier Program had just begun down in an underground base.

… … …

Another day passed.

Officer Brandt called all the recruits and had them gather in the square, later informing them the end of the Super Soldier Program which caused vehement uproars among the recruits.

Kyle knew the course of history.

If true to the story, the first superhero, Captain America, was born.
