Chapter 27: Sneak Card (1)
“I think I understand what’s going on now.”
Kyle looked at the enemy base at the foot of the hill and said, “The intelligence we acquired from the sheepskin map, that is, the location of the camp is true. However, they also encrypted some of the information.”
Fury pondered over his words. “Seems like they swapped the size of the camps.”
“That’s it.” Kyle nodded.
Of the five German camps, only one is a large base, three are medium-sized camps, and the last is a small transit station.
The Germans swapped the sizes of the large base and the small transit station, which is quite an unusual way to cipher it.
Fury smiled bitterly. “That is to say, what we’re facing now is the enemy base which the Colonel was planning to attack with more than five troops. And the destination of the troops led by the Colonel is actually the small camp that should have been raided by us.”
“There’s no point in complaining now,” Kyle spoke in a cold voice. “ Sergeant Fury, you have more on-the-spot combat experience than I do. Now that this situation confronts us, what do you think we should do?”
Fury stared at the enemy in the distance with knitted brows, and after thinking for a moment, he reluctantly spoke, “It’s obvious that we should give up on this raid. With merely a hundred men, even if they were extremely experienced in combat, they would undoubtedly lose their lives in vain.”
“Can’t we get in touch with the colonel through the comm we brought along?” Kyle proceeded to ask.
“No,” Fury shook his head and gave up on the thought. “We are too close to the enemy base. At this distance, the signal will be easily intercepted by the enemy. Not to mention, there’s not much time left until the rest of the troops begin their raid. Once the other camps are attacked, the base camp will catch wind of the news.”
“So, according to common combat judgement, we only give up the mission, right?” Kyle maintained a poker-face as he spoke. “Sergeant Fury, did you forget? We assured our superiors that we’d successfully carry out the raid!”
“But––” Fury protested with a complicated expression.
“No buts!” Kyle interrupted him. “If we give up the chance to raid the base camp today, next time the enemy will be on high alert, and it’ll be challenging to find such a great opportunity next time.
“Don’t keep me in the dark. Did you come up with an idea, to say that?” Fury looked at Kyle in surprise and spoke with a stoic look.
“I can’t hide it from you. It’s not an idea; it’s a battle plan.” With a faint smile, Kyle leaned forward and whispered some words in Fury’s ears.
When Fury heard his words, he stared at Kyle as if he was a madman and trembled, “Are you crazy? You want to sneak into the enemy base alone? Do you have a death wish?”
Kyle shrugged his shoulders and said earnestly, “I’m not crazy. It’s just that in order to pull off this mission, we can only take the risk and give this idea a try. If I sneak into the enemy base and destroy their defense mechanism from inside, and if we attack them with our hundred men at the same time, we could still have a chance at succeeding.
“It’s not so easy to sneak into such a large base like this.” Fury shook his head.
“That’s my job. I just need your approval and support, “ Kyle said in a grim tone.
Fury fell silent and looked straight at Kyle for a moment. Then, he spoke in a slow and forceful tone, “To tell you the truth, I have no reason to dissuade you. After all, no wants to give up the task before it even begins. So you can try it out, but I’ll stay at the front. If you fail, I’ll immediately retreat with the troop.”
“Rest assured, I will never burden others with my life.”
As soon as Kyle uttered these words, he nosedived down the slope of the mountain and soon enough, his figure disappeared in the darkness of the night at the foot of the mountain.
“What a madman.” Fury sighed.
