Chapter 36: The ability
Draco frowned, a trace of confusion gracing his features "Captain, Isn’t he with you?"
Lisa looked at him and then chuckled, "Very funny. You want to give the Captain high blood pressure so late at night. Draco, the Captain, was attacked, we are all exhausted."
Draco was not lying, Ravi had placed a mark on the suspect and he could tell they were quickly moving West, judging by the speed, they should be in a car and not flying. The fourth person, whose power was even stronger than Arlen. Ravi could draw some conclusions on what kind of ability it was.
"I am not lying." Draco’s voice lacked his flamboyant tone and he chewed on his lips, he did that when he was very nervous, he looked at the other police officers.
One of them stepped out, he was a man in his middle age like Sergeant Tom, "We were here. You came in and requested the suspect. You said that the holding cell here is not durable enough and you would transfer the suspect to the cell in the next city. You refused to be escorted and asked Draco to stay behind."
Draco clenched and unclenched his fist, "I...The person was not you, wasn’t it, Captain? I gave the suspect to the villains." His bottom lips were bright red, if this continued, they would be bruised.
Ravi looked at Arlen, he should be very angry? The arrest had not been an easy one, and the Clean-up crew was still dealing with the consequences, and the hospital, who knew the effect of switching off the electricity for ten minutes would be to the patients at the Davenport Hospital. And after all that, the suspect they had tried to apprehend was missing, who would not be pissed off.
The man was calm, he was not smiling as usual, but there was no anger in his features. He was just calm and his eyes serious, he gave off a steady aura, like a pine in the mountains.
This appearance was...
Ravi’s fingers twitched and he put it in his pocket.
"Get the surveillance of the station."
Draco hurried to the control room upstairs, coming back in mere seconds. The USB was plunged into the computer and Arlen reached to move the footage forward. Draco zoomed in and placed the suspect who was unconscious in the holding cells, he then cleared the room of any weapon before slumping on his desk.
Minutes later, some of the police officers who had gone on patrol started returning and Draco began to tell them something with animated movements.
A few minutes later, a tall handsome man walked into the office.
"Captain. That looks like you." Sarah noted quietly, "You were fighting that Ignitor at this time though."
"It is exactly the same. Is it a shapeshifter? Isn’t that ability a bit too much?"
"It does not look exactly the same. His eyes are too dull, his posture is not straight enough, his hair is a bit shorter than the Captain’s and the way he stands is just wrong, It is not the same." It was just too fake that it made his teeth ache, he hated this illusion of the Captain.
Lisa was speechless, "Ravi, how do you know?" She placed her hand on her mouth, her eyes wide.
Arlen looked at Ravi, the other stood by the side, those hazel eyes looked both annoyed at Lisa and utterly confused, like he did not understand what the fuss was about. His eyes softened a bit.
"I understand. I will contact Emily and the Hero Association. This is a mistake anyone can make, but Officer Brown, this can not be repeated. On other occasions, you would ask questions before handing over a suspect, this shapeshifter is quite good, he fooled everyone but Officer West."
"I am just observant." Arlen was very handsome, was it not normal for people to look at handsome things?
"Very observant." He said with a smile before rubbing his hair, scattering the curls messily over his face, "I would not lie, this is very upsetting but we identified the suspect, we would put a B.O.B for him around and the Hero Association would know who to look for. If they can not find him, we will put in a formal request for a tracker. Everyone has done a very good job, it has not been easy these past few days. Go home to your loved ones and rest up. Tomorrow is another good day."
Draco’s eyes watered and he bowed slightly, "I am sorry, Captain."
"It was not your fault. Do not think too much."
The mood was sour in the officer, especially as Emily and Tariq came back to the office. It was only the night shift police officers and Ravi that were in the office, Ravi honestly did not know where his buttocks seemed glued to his chair watching the Captain who had been consoling others, make several calls, the expression on his face falling with each one.
Emily had a lot to say but Arlen hardly put any words in. He stood at his table, almost silent until she stormed out of the office, Tariq in tow.
It was 9 pm and the Captain was still in the office. The Night shift officers had already started looking for spots to sleep.
Ravi signed and went to the vending machine, he rarely used this machine, the drinks were not a quarter as good as the ones he made at home.
He put a coin and a can rolled out.
He knocked and entered the office.
Arlen was typing something on the computer, he signed a second as he did so. He heard the knock and looked up.
"Officer West, you are still around?" He looked at the clock. It was 9 p.m. Don’t tell him, "Are you here for the overtime pay? It already ended when I dismissed you."
"Oh! Too bad. Here." Ravi gave him the yellow can.
"What is this?" Arlen reached out and took the can.
"Juice."
Arlen lifted a brow, "Why would you give me a can of juice?"
Ravi looked at him and looked away, "You have not drank water since you entered here. If you die of dehydration, I do not have funeral money."
Arlen was first speechless before he burst out laughing, "You like money, don’t you, Officer West?"
"Who doesn’t?" Ravi gave him the look that he was foolish for even asking that question.
"I don’t." He shrugged carelessly.
"That is because you are rich. Your phone already cost my salary for six months, you do not care about money because you are rich,"
It was like an arrow with the label, rich scum struck Arlen’s chest, "Officer West, you can be so blunt." He opened the can and took a long sip, "Pineapple and Coconut, I like it."
If it was Lisa, Ravi would have stretched his hand to collect the money for the can from her but it was this Captain of his.
He just stood silently as Arlen finished the entire drink. He waited a minute or more, watching as the Captain covered his hand with both of his hands, his voice was hoarse as if on the verge of tears, "Today, it was my fault."
