Chapter 87 – A Quiet and Troubled Night

Chapter 87: Chapter 87 – A Quiet and Troubled Night

That night, Sylvia fell asleep with an unease she couldn’t shake from her mind. The luxurious and warm room in Velthya’s residence should have made anyone feel safe and comfortable. But her thoughts kept drifting to another world a place where someone important to her was struggling alone amidst chaos.

Meanwhile, in that other world still wrapped in night, the atmosphere at Sofia’s base was no less tense.

"Have you checked all the places he usually goes?" Sofia asked, her voice tired but still full of resolve. Her usually neat hair was slightly messy, and her face showed a worry she couldn’t hide.

Altair, standing beside her, nodded with a serious expression. "Of course. We searched the lab, the reagent storage, even the observation room. But he’s nowhere to be found."

Sofia rubbed her temples. The day had been too much. Since morning, they had faced increasingly bold and organized rebel attacks. And now, close to midnight, another piece of bad news arrived Viktor, their brilliant scientist, had disappeared.

"Yuki, Yuna, Rani, Vivi..." she called softly, and the four girls quickly approached. They all looked exhausted, yet alert.

"Did any of you see Viktor today?" Sofia asked again.

Yuna raised her hand. "I saw him earlier this afternoon. He returned to the lab as usual."

Altair nodded. "I also checked his lab, but he wasn’t there. Strangely, all his things were in place. No signs of a struggle or damage."

A heavy silence fell over the room.

Vivi, usually the most cheerful among them, spoke in a serious tone. "Is it possible he was captured by the rebels? I mean... he’s the weakest when it comes to fighting."

"That’s possible," Rani chimed in. "But exactly because he’s our strategist, they might have targeted him. Thanks to his tactics, we’ve managed to hold off their attacks so far."

Sofia looked at them one by one. Rani’s words made sense. Viktor might not be able to swing a sword or throw a spear, but his mind was the sharpest weapon among them. Without him, they might have lost a long time ago.

"In that case, we can’t let this drag on," Sofia said firmly. "Tomorrow morning, we’re relocating. We’re too scattered, and that’s dangerous."

Everyone nodded silently. Their faces showed deep fatigue, but also the determination to endure.

Sofia walked to her room with slow steps. It felt like walking under a shadow of anxiety that followed her every move.

Once inside, she took off her military jacket and entered the bathroom. Warm water touched her skin, washing away the dust and sweat of battle that had clung to her since morning. But no amount of water could wash away the fatigue in her heart that night.

After bathing, she put on a simple white nightgown and lay down on the bed. Her back met the soft fabric, but there was no comfort there. No sense of peace came tonight. freewёbnoνel.com

She hugged her pillow tightly, burying her face into it as if to hide all the pain and worry that had built up. The tears she’d held back finally fell, dampening the cold pillow.

Amid the stifled sobs, she whispered softly,"I miss you... Sylvia."

And eventually, she fell asleep.

The next morning, soft sunlight streamed through the window, slowly illuminating the stone walls and sheer curtains swaying gently in the breeze. I opened my eyes slowly.

I rose from the bed and sat at the edge. My gaze fell on the large mirror standing in the corner of the room, and as I looked at my own reflection, I went still.

A dark aura surrounded my body gently trembling like thick mist dancing with my emotions. My red eyes looked darker than usual, as if reflecting not just my image, but the worry and guilt I couldn’t dispel.

I took a slow breath. "Calm down... calm down..." I whispered to myself.

But calming myself wasn’t easy when my heart was full of anxiety. The image of Sofia flashed in my mind her clear eyes, her voice that was gentle yet full of spirit, and that stubbornness that somehow always made me smile.

It’s been two days since I arrived in this world. Two days without knowing if she’s okay. Two days where I couldn’t protect her. And she’s trapped in the middle of a rebellion, while I can’t even be by her side.

Just as my dark aura began to ripple more violently, two familiar voices echoed in my mind voices that had become part of me since I began walking the path of an evolving undead.

Alicia spoke first, her voice soft as always. "Calm down, Sylvia... You’re not alone. Your heart just needs to return to its center. I know what it feels like to worry about someone you love. But you can’t help anyone if you lose control of yourself."

Then came Stacia, his deep and firm tone slipping in unusually straightforward rather than his usual tsundere manner. "Let your worry fuel you. Don’t let it paralyze you. You’ve become a powerful being, Sylvia. But strength without resolve only leads to destruction."

I closed my eyes, listening to them in silence. My breathing began to slow. The dark aura surrounding me gradually thinned... and then disappeared entirely, like morning mist swallowed by sunlight.

When I opened my eyes, my reflection in the mirror looked calmer, though my face still bore deep lines of worry. But now, there was something different resolve.

"I have to go back," I murmured.

Alicia and Stacia said nothing. But I knew they agreed. And more than that they would support this decision.

I didn’t know how to return quickly. But I would find a way. This world, as chaotic as it was, surely still held paths for those reckless enough to seek them.

I had to return to my world. To the world where Sofia was. The world where Tyrant, my army, and all that chaos was still unfolding. The world where my heart resided.

Staring at my own reflection, I clenched my fists.

"I will return... no matter what it takes."
