Chapter 773: Uncertainty Of His Condition

Aurdis entered the room, her eyes immediately falling on the weakened forms of her father and brother lying in their beds. She had long since wiped away her tears, not wanting to let her sorrow worsen the atmosphere.

She walked slowly toward them, offering a faint smile to the healers who were working tirelessly, then came to a stop between the two beds. Her eyes shifted gently back and forth between King Gulben and Aerchon.

"Aurdis, are you alright?" King Gulben asked softly as he opened his eyes and noticed his daughter standing there.

Aurdis stepped closer to her father, instinctively reaching out to hold his hand—only to stop when she saw the condition it was in. His arms were too damaged to bear even a gentle touch. She quickly withdrew her hand.

"I'm alright, Father," Aurdis replied with a soft smile she had to force. Her voice remained gentle, though she tried her best to make it sound firm.

King Gulben nodded and smiled despite the pain he was clearly enduring. "That's good."

Aurdis let out a quiet sigh. "For now, just focus on your recovery, Father. I'll take care of everything else."

Smiling again, King Gulben replied, "I trust you. You've grown into a strong woman. I believe you can handle this. Thank you."

As if those were the words he had long been holding in his heart, a look of relief washed over the King's face. He closed his eyes with a deep breath, as though for the first time he no longer had to worry, simply because Aurdis was here.

Seeing her father finally at peace, Aurdis smiled faintly. That trust he placed in her gave her a glimmer of warmth, a fragile sense of happiness in the middle of all this devastation.

With her father finally resting, Aurdis turned her gaze to Aerchon—her brother, who had unfortunately taken a devastating blow in the battle.

Her eyes settled on his wounded chest, still releasing a thin, ominous black mist. Just looking at it, she couldn't shake the feeling that the worst might still be yet to come for him.

He had always seemed cold. Stern, certainly, but also a powerful leader. Stubborn, without a doubt. Yet he was a warrior through and through, someone who led his army with strength and resolve.

But now, seeing him like this—so still, so fragile—Aurdis couldn't help but feel a deep ache in her heart

Aurdis took a slow step toward Aerchon's bedside, her voice barely louder than a whisper as she addressed the lead healer who stood beside him.

The healer was a tall, silver-haired Elf woman, her hands glowing faintly as she channeled her Magic directly into Aerchon's chest.

"What's his condition?" Aurdis asked quietly, her eyes lingering on the tendrils of black mist that still leaked from the wound.

The healer didn't respond immediately. Instead, she reached for a thick cloth, placing it gently over the still-bleeding wound on Aerchon's chest.

As the fabric touched his skin, a sharp sizzle filled the room, the sound so jarring that Aurdis winced.

More of the black mist hissed up from beneath the cloth, curling into the air like smoke from burning oil.

The healer finally spoke, her voice weary but calm.

"He's the same as when we found him, princess. No better or worse." Her hands didn't stop glowing as she continued her work, brows drawn tightly in focus. "We've been treating the wound since the moment he was brought in, but it's... stubborn. Resistant to Magic. It's unlike anything we've ever encountered."

She paused for a moment, then looked at Aurdis with solemn eyes.

"Whatever Lord Laston hit him with it's not normal. It's a kind of energy that defies what we know of Magic. We're still trying to understand it. But for now… we need more time."

Aurdis bit her lip, the sharp taste of blood grounding her in the moment.

"Will he be alright?" she asked with tight voice that also trembling just beneath the surface.

The healer's gaze softened, but her words did not offer comfort. "I… don't know yet, Princess."

And that was all it took. Just those few words.

I don't know yet.

Aurdis understood what they really meant. They didn't know if Aerchon would survive. Didn't know if the damage could be reversed. Didn't know if the brother she knew would ever open his eyes again.

Her heart twisted painfully, but she didn't let her tears fall. Not here and now. She clenched her jaw and nodded.

"Then keep trying. Don't stop," Aurdis said, her voice low and clipped.

"Yes, Princess," the healer replied with a gentle bow of her head.

Aurdis turned away quickly before the emotion could take over. Her steps were quiet but quick as she left the room, the door closing softly behind her.

Once outside, she leaned against the wall in the corridor, closing her eyes for just a moment.

The cool stone was solid against her back, a silent anchor in a world that suddenly felt too fragile.

The tears welled, but she swallowed them down, forcing herself to breathe.

There was no time to break. Not when her people still needed her.

Aurdis steeled herself and pushed away from the wall, her steps quickening as she made her way toward the courtyard.

The sounds of movement and strained voices filled the air. Healers tending to the wounded, soldiers organizing the remains of the battlefield.

The evacuation was still ongoing and at the center of it stood King Fairon, the ruler of the Forest Elves, issuing commands with calm precision.

He turned as Aurdis approached. "Are you alright?" he asked gently.

Aurdis gave a brief nod. "I'm fine. What did you find, your majesty?"

King Fairon glanced toward the ruins.

"Quite a lot," he said grimly. "We believed the Ogres and Daemons were just brutes driven by rage. But after examining the corpses... their movements were guided by their armor. It's something entirely new."

Aurdis followed his gaze to the shattered wall, where the twisted bodies of the enemy lay strewn. Her eyes narrowed. "Laston is truly merciless."

King Fairon folded his arms. "Yes. But there's a bright side. We might be able to use this. His innovations and his twisted creations. If we study them, we could strengthen our forces."

Aurdis nodded slowly, the gears in her mind already turning.
