Chapter 779: Twilight At The Palace

He was still inside Saeldir's chamber. After Erend added a few more pieces of information into the printed tablet, the laptop had already shut down, and its screen was now dark. Erend simply stared at it, seeing his reflection on the now-black monitor.

His mind was made up, and he had gathered enough data from the laptop — enough to give to the Elves.

Although it might not seem like much, what was here was already substantial. The information he obtained might not be as extensive as they had hoped, even though he got it from an advanced device straight from Laston's world. But here, there were plenty of remnants of Laston's army that could be reverse-engineered for their own gain.

He didn't need to give them more than that — or else danger would come.

Carrying the laptop, Erend opened another portal to go to Laston's world. He stepped inside and immediately returned to the chamber where the engineers were working.

He told them to preserve the information carefully because he would be back. Then he warned them again not to try anything funny or attempt to escape, because he would know.

In truth, Erend didn't have any power to actually know what these engineers might do — but he only needed to say it, and they would believe him.

After seeing the display of power that he and Eccar had shown, who would be foolish enough to take the risk of not believing him?

These engineers definitely weren't stupid. So they wouldn't take that risk.

After finishing that matter, Erend returned to Saeldir's chamber, now intending to help with the evacuation and cleanup of the Palace.

Just as the portal closed behind him, however, the door was knocked on several times. From the knocks, Erend could sense that the person was eager to come in.

So he opened the door and saw King Fairon, the king of the Forest Elves, standing behind it. Upon seeing Erend's face, King Fairon gave a short smile.

"May I come in?" asked the King.

"Sure." Erend stepped back to let him in. In his mind, he was already thinking about what the King might want right now.

"What are you doing here?" King Fairon asked, his eyes scanning the room as if searching for something.

"Just resting," Erend said. "Is there something important you need to talk about? I think I should help the Elves clean up the Palace."

"Resting?" King Fairon didn't seem convinced, staring at Erend with his green eyes.

"Yes. Why?"

King Fairon looked at Erend in silence for a few moments. Then he sighed, realizing he couldn't intimidate Erend with his status like he could with others.

"I just want to know if you found anything after all these attacks," King Fairon finally said.

"Oh, yes. Actually, I did find something." Erend reached into his pocket and took out the palm-sized tablet with intricate patterns.

King Fairon's eyes lit up at the sight, even though he didn't yet know what it was.

"W-What is that?" asked the King.

"It contains some important information I got from Laston's world. There's a lot in here that Eccar and I still don't fully understand. Later, we plan to explain what's on this device once King Gulben has recovered," Erend said in a calm voice.

King Fairon nodded. "Good. I can't wait to see what kind of information we'll get from it."

Erend let out a sigh. "Unfortunately, not all the information and data in here is good, Your Majesty."

Hearing that, King Fairon frowned, a questioning look in his eyes.

"Later. For now, let's help clean up the Palace."

With that, Erend stepped out of the chamber. King Fairon followed behind him. He could wait until later.

After that, Erend and King Fairon focused solely on the task at hand: cleaning up the Palace. With the help of the two Dragonborn, Erend and Eccar, the pace of the recovery quickened dramatically.

Eccar lifted massive slabs of white wall debris with ease jusst like before. Meanwhile, Erend moved swiftly through the ruins, his strength and precision allowing him to lift, shift, and clear stone that would have taken ten Elves working together to move.

Together, the two of them uncovered several Elf corpses that had been buried beneath the collapsed sections of the Palace wall. Many already beyond saving, but a few still alive, clinging to breath.

The healers rushed in the moment space was cleared, their hands glowing with exhausted but determined Magic.

Thanks to the swift actions of the Dragonborns, they could finally tend to everyone who could still be saved. The rest, at the very least, were given proper rites.

Once the interior of the Palace had been stabilized, Erend and Eccar turned their attention to the battlefield outside. The corpses of Ogres and Daemons littered the broken stone and scorched earth, some still wrapped in pieces of mechanical armor that sparked occasionally, twitching with the last dying remnants of twisted Magic.

Erend stepped forward first. With a deep breath, fire welled up from within him, burning in the veins beneath his skin.

He raised his hands and a wave of flame roared across the battlefield, engulfing the monstrous bodies. Flesh and metal alike turned to ash in seconds.

Eccar followed after him, raising both fists to the sky and slamming them down. The ground cracked and rose, then folded in on itself, grinding bodies and broken armor into dust beneath tons of stone.

But just before they could destroy everything, King Fairon raised a hand.

"Wait," he called out, voice firm despite his weariness. "Spare some of the bodies. We need to study them and learn how they functioned."

Erend and Eccar exchanged glances, then nodded.

"Understood," Erend said. "We'll leave some untouched."

"We can't afford to burn all the evidence," Eccar added.

With that agreement, they resumed their work, clearing what they could, but leaving several corpses and shattered exo-suits arranged in neat lines to be studied later.

By the time twilight fell, the Palace outside ground already have much less corpses.

The smell of death still lingered and the pain hadn't disappeared, but there was a sense of order now.

Erend found himself standing alone on one of the high balconies overlooking the Palace towers. The wind whispered past him, carrying the scent of death Ogres, Daemons, and machines.

He looked out at the horizon. Before, this view had been peaceful. Just days ago, he had stood here and watched the twilight fall with quiet awe. Now, that same sight stretched over the kingdom that marred by destruction.

The towers around him were cracked. The walls bore scorch marks. The courtyards were still soaked with blood and scattered across the ground below were the remnants of corpses, metals, and a pass war.

His hand tightened slightly on the balcony railing. He have to admit that even amid the ruin, the sky remained beautiful.

Purple streaked with red and gold, the clouds glowing as if touched by fire like a reminder that the world still turned. That even after horror, there could be light.

Erend closed his eyes for a moment, letting the wind pass over him. The battle was over. But the war — the greater one — was still ahead.

And he, Eccar, and the others, had much to prepare for.

Maybe even, this next problem will be beyond the Elves kingdom.
