Chapter 51: They Came in the Cover of Darkness
THIRD PERSON POV:
They had the evidence they needed to take down Alpha Micca and his beta. Ambrose sent his beta Damon to fetch the them both and ordered him to bring them to the table.
"Follow me" Ambrose ordered Odette, and she agreed. She was hungry and more than ready to eat something, anything at this point, she was just starving.
They strolled through the maze-like halls in the building. Finally reaching the dining room. Ambrose took Alpha Micca’s seat at the head of the table. Odette took the seat to his right, the one he pulled the chair out for, insisting she sit beside him. She didn’t argue, the sooner they sat the sooner they’d eat. And after all that reading, she was positively famished.
She knew dinner was going to get messy. But she prayed to the goddess to feed her before everything hit the fan.
However, that’s not how things went.
Damon brought the both the alpha and beta like Ambrose asked.
"Have a seat, gentlemen." Ambrose gestured to the table, servants walked around placing a plate loaded with food in front of them.
They looked confused, seeing the beta fetching them, they thought for sure their asses were cooked, but they were brought to the dining room instead. They felt a wave of relief wash over them, that was until they saw the Alpha King sitting at the head of the table, in Alpha Micca’s seat.
The two were nervous, fidgetily in their seats.
’Did they find anything? No, if they had they wouldn’t be sitting in the dining hall they’d be in a prison cell.’ They knew how brutal and ruthless their Alpha King was.
Dinner was served in silence, a heavy, on edge silence.
Odette was in the middle of shoveling a fork full of food in her mouth when Ambros rose from his feet, grabbed his plate, and chucked it at Alpha Micca. "You dare sit at this table and eat with your king knowing damn fucking well you stole from him? You have some nerve."
Alpha Micca was shocked and now covered in the dinner they were having. In an instant, Ambrose crossed the distance and punched him square in the jaw.
Alpha Micca was knocked out of his seat. His jaw hung loosely from his face.
"You broke my fucking jaw!" Alpha Micca screamed and stuttered, he tried to stand up, but Ambrose grabbed the chair and slammed it down on Alpha Micca, wood splintering, he cried out in pain.
But now seething with anger and raging instinct. Alpha Micca jumped up and lunged at Ambrose. But Ambrose saw his move before he even knew it himself.
Ambrose, holding one of the broken chair legs, smacked him across the face, again. Alpha Micca stumbled, crashing into a table with water and wine. The table broke and the drinks came crashing down on him, he was now bloodied, wet and painted red from wine. He growled at Ambrose. But before Alpha Micca could rise, Ambrose cleared the room in an instant and kicked his chest. The sound of his sternum cracking reverberated in Odette’s ears.
Odette sat watching, unmoved but unphased. She knew this man was the reason so many children were sleeping in the cold. She saw the state of the homes and business; it broke her heart. So, she had no sympathy to spare for a man as grimy as him. He deserved whatever came his way.
"You let children sleep in the cold so you could gamble? Are you seriously such a scum bag yo’d let your own packs children shiver in the dead of night for some cards?" Ambrose yelled punching the man again.
Breaking his eye socket, the once strong and proud Alpha Micca was now a pathetic crumbled, bloodied mess on the floor.
Alpha Micca looked to Odette with pleading eyes, begging her to say something, putting all his hope in her being able to sway the Alpha King.
But instead, she crushed his hope and stepped on his dreams. She smiled and then spit on the ground.
He trembled beneath Ambrose’s unforgiving gaze.
His beta sat shaking and whimpering in his chair. Afraid for his Alpha and himself.
"I’m sorry, my king, please, just give me another chance.
Ambrose laughed loudly and Odette snorted.
"You are so weak, it’s pathetic, you call yourself an Alpha? All I see is a crippled man crumpled on the floor." Odette rose to her feet. Beta Damon went to handle her, but Ambrose held up his hand, stilling Damon.
Odette strolled over, walking with all the grace of someone born into royalty. But carried the confidence of an assassin.
She stood above him "If this is all you have to offer your pack; it’s a wonder how the rogues haven’t taken this pack yet. You aren’t worthy of sitting at the table with me, a pet. Yet you king would let me, his pet, speak to you like your worth less than dirt. And you just take it. Useless. My great-grandmother, Lilith, will be disappointed knowing you won’t be returning to The Black Wood Casino."
The truth of her identity settled in. He’d heard of the vampire princess, heard rumors of her being kidnapped by wolves. But never did he expect to see the girl standing in his dining room, standing beside his king, looking like she belonged there.
"Take him to the prison cells. Have his family join him, as well." Ambrose ordered, and the soldiers scrambled. "Let’s go."
Ambrose looked to Odette and said "I’ll be back, have Emalea take you back to the room."
He turned and left; Emalea walked over to Odette. Odette grabbed her hand and lead her away.
"Take me outside please, I’s stale and cramped in here and I need air desperately. With you I won’t get in trouble. You smell like a wolf." Odette chuckled, trying to make light of what happened earlier.
"Alpha King Ambrose asked me to take you back to his room, I shouldn’t disobey him while he’s this mad." Emalea explained to Odette.
"Don’t worry, I’ll take the heat. Come on." Odette jerked Emalea and dragged her down the halls "Okay now, which way is the back door outta here?"
"Fine!" Emalea laughed "Go right at this hall here. And then take the first left. Good alright another right and through those double doors it the kitchen, and the kitchen has a storage door that’s shared with the outside."
Emalea and Odette reached the outdoors. Odette broke out and laughter and started jumping and spinning. "Ugh, this cold air, it feels so good, it’s exactly what I needed." The snow fell softly on her, the crisp air turning her nose red.
Then the hairs on her back stood straight up.
Seconds later and alarm started blaring.
"Oh no, something’s happening. We have to go find Alpha King Ambrose!" Emalea shouted, but when they ran back to the door and tried to open it, it was locked.
"We have to run around the front." Odette said.
"Okay." Emalea nodded firmly ready to run. Smoke billowed up in the distance, yells and howls could be heard, once in the distance as well as ones inside the pack.
Ambrose was in the prison area, which was a separate part of the village.
Alpha Micca heard the alarm and if he could have grinned with his broken jaw, he would have. The rogues were here, and once they attacked that would be his chance to escape.
Guards came rushing into the room, "Alpha King Ambrose, it’s the rogues. They’re here. They used the night for cover!"
