Chapter 41

Chapter 41: Chapter 41

The wall finally crashed down, revealing a surprisingly cute, big-eyed Snookum.

The group went silent, their eyes darting back and forth between me and the Snookum, uncertainty etched on their faces.

Then, Vaughn burst out laughing, pointing at the monster. "Ahahaha! This? This is the monster you’re so afraid of?"

He approached the creature, his bravado on full display as he gestured with both hands. "Ahahaha! This? This is the monster you’re afraid of?"

"Vaughn! I suggest you come back here right now!" I shouted angrily, frustration boiling over. ’Why won’t this idiot ever listen?’

"No!" Vaughn shouted back defiantly. "I mean, what are you so afraid of? You even said that they’re only novice ranked!"

He continued to approach the cute monster, his hands extending as if to pet it. "Awww! What a cute little thing you are! Come to pa—"

Before he could finish, the Snookum immediately pounced on him, sinking its sharp teeth into his nose.

"AAAAAHHHHHK!!!" Vaughn screamed, stumbling backward as he clutched his face. He fell to the ground, flailing and frantically trying to pry the creature off.

"GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF ME! IT HURTS!" he yelled, flailing his arms wildly.

I let out a deep sigh, frustration evident in my expression. Without hesitation, I drew my dagger and swiftly threw it at the tiny creature. The blade pierced through the Snookum’s body, dropping it to the ground with a soft thud. However, the monster’s head remained firmly clinging to Vaughn’s nose, twitching and squeaking.

"Aaahhhh!" Vaughn shouted in pain, flailing and trying to pry the Snookum’s teeth loose.

"Stop shouting! You’re alerting them to our position!" I barked at him. Gesturing him to shut up.

But it was too late. His shout had already drawn the attention of dozens of Snookums, who came running toward us, their small bodies darting through the shadows like a wave of fur and teeth. Meanwhile, Vaughn was busy whining in pain, his hands clutching his nose.

"Vaughn! Get your ass back here and help us kill these things!" I commanded sharply, my eyes narrowing.

"Uhmm!" He groaned in pain, clutching his nose, but after a moment, he nodded and staggered back to his position, still whining and muttering under his breath.

The swarm of Snookums kept squeaking, their tiny bodies moving swiftly as they closed in, their sharp teeth bared and ready to attack.

"One more thing," I shouted over the chaos, "they’re called Snookums! And focus on killing the ones squeaking like banshees—they’re calling for backup!"

Suddenly, one of the Snookums launched itself at the edge of our circle, razor-sharp claws extended, aiming to tear into us.

Without hesitation, I darted forward, sidestepping the creature’s claws with practiced ease. I delivered a swift, powerful kick to its belly, causing it to tumble backward into the pack of snarling creatures.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team quickly took up defensive positions around the circle. Caleb and Jawn, both sharp-eyed archers, nocked their bows, aiming carefully at the approaching monsters. Vaughn, wielding his spear, stood ready, eyes flicking around for any sudden leaps or jumps from the pack.

The Snookums, sensing the threat, pressed in closer, but our team moved with coordinated precision. Caleb and Jawn fired arrows one after another, each striking a Snookum and dropping it before it could attack. Vaughn jabbed his spear at any creature that got too close, keeping them at bay.

One by one, we picked off the sneaky little monsters, their squeaks turning frantic as they fell. The sound of squealing and the thud of bodies hitting the ground echoed in the tense air.

As the last Snookum collapsed to the ground, a wave of exhaustion washed over us. The tense silence settled for a moment before we let out collective sighs of relief. Despite our victory, we bore the marks of battle—scratches, bruises, and weary eyes.

I took a step back, surveying the aftermath of the chaos. "Well done, team," I said with relief. "We make a good one. But we can’t let our guard down for a second—especially you, Vaughn. We don’t know what other dangers might be lurking out there."

The others nodded in agreement, tending to their wounds and catching their breath. Vaughn, meanwhile, stayed silent, embarrassment evident on his face for his earlier outburst and the chaos it caused. He rubbed his nose, still sore from the encounter, and looked away.

"Let’s hurry. We’re almost there," I said, trying to keep my tone steady despite my urgency.

"Where?" Vaughn asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.

I hesitated for a moment before responding, "To the exit." It was a lie—what we were really heading toward was the hidden boss chamber where Cypher’s team had unknowingly walked into danger.

Whitney crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "You’ve been saying that for ten minutes now."

I only nodded, trying to mask my concern. "We’re already near."

Sure enough, as we rounded a corner, we finally saw the entrance to the boss area. My heart raced as I caught sight of Cypher’s team, already engaged in a fierce battle against a massive monster. It was clear they were in trouble.

The monster they were fighting was the Crimson Scourge.

————————————

Crimson Scourge

Difficulty: Elite Grade 2

Form: A towering behemoth with a serpentine body covered in crimson, armored scales. Its body is roughly 20 feet in length, with a diameter of about 5 feet. Its head is shaped like a dragon’s, with glowing red eyes and a pair of razor-sharp horns. The monster’s tail is long and whip-like, capable of striking multiple enemies at once.

Killing Method: A relentless predator that will chase down its enemies, using its speed and agility to outmaneuver them. It will use its tail to strike down its prey, often targeting those who are most vulnerable or injured. Once its prey is weakened, the Crimson Scourge will use its dark magic to drain their life force, slowly draining their vitality.

Weak Spot: Its heart, located in the center of its chest. This vulnerable area is surrounded by a series of protective scales, making it difficult to target. However, if an enemy can manage to land a critical hit on the heart, they will be able to deal massive damage to the monster and potentially stun it.

I saw Cypher stumbling back, his sword trembling in his hand as he desperately tried to defend himself. But it was clear that he was no match for the monster’s sheer strength and ferocity.

In that moment, instinct took over. I swiftly drew my dagger, my movements quick and precise. With a focused flick of my wrist, I launched the blade straight toward the beast’s eye, aiming to blind it and buy Cypher some crucial seconds.

Time seemed to slow down as the dagger hurtled through the air. The group held their collective breaths, watching in awe. Would my shot be enough to save Cypher’s life? freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Miraculously, the dagger struck true with a satisfying thud, and the Crimson Scourge let out a deafening roar of pain. Its eye was blinded, and it staggered backwards, disoriented. Seizing the opportunity, Cypher pushed away from the beast’s reach and scrambled to safety.

I drew another dagger, a grin forming despite the chaos. I was jogging over to him and say something when suddenly, the ground and ceiling around to where I was standing trembled violently. The entire area shuddered as loose rocks and debris began to fall from above. A massive boulder crashed down near the entrance, blocking my team from entering.

I quickly drew another dagger, grinning at Cypher’s narrow escape, but before I could speak, the ground and ceiling shook violently. Loose rocks began to rain down around us, and a massive boulder fell near the entrance, sealing my team outside the area.

"Remillia!" they shouted, panic rising in their voices as they tried to push against the boulders. "We can’t get in!"

"Stay back! Just call for help that an Elite monster is here!" I yelled, my heart racing as I assessed the situation.

Meanwhile, Cypher couldn’t believe that he was saved by me again. He quickly snapped out of his thoughts as he heard me speaking.

"Are you alright? We need to quickly kill the boss monster first before it gets back to killing us," I said, urgency lacing my voice.

The Crimson Scourge was still shaking its head, trying to focus its gaze on us, its glowing red eyes filled with rage.

I glanced at his injured teammates, assessing the situation. "Is there anyone who can still walk? Help the injured ones and get to a safe place—"

Claire suddenly cut me off, her voice rising above the chaos. "Wait, what would Cypher do?"

"I need Cypher’s help to defeat the monster," I replied, keeping my focus on the task at hand.

"Wait! I should do it instead! I’m stronger than you!" Claire insisted, her eyes gleaming with determination.

I sighed, rubbing my temples in frustration. "Your name’s Claire right? We need to work together to survive. Your teammates are injured, and they need your help!"

"No, I don’t want to! I should be helping Cypher instead of you! I’m his love—teammate!" she snapped back, her cheeks flushing with stubbornness.

I watched as Claire took a step forward, eager to push me away. But before she could reach out, Cypher raised a hand, stopping her gently but firmly.

"Remillia’s right. Claire, I need your help more than ever—start by moving our teammates to a safe place," Cypher said, his voice steady and calm.

Claire nodded quickly, her face determined. "O-okay, but before I finish this, I promise to help you out," she said, rushing to follow through on her promise.

She moved to assist the injured, while Cypher and I stood side by side, ready for whatever came next.

I turned to look at him, a smirk playing on my lips. "See? Claire’s obsessed with you."

Cypher shot me a sharp look. "Stop tormenting her," he said, a hint of annoyance in his tone.

"And you should stop being kind to everybody. That’s the reason why you face danger in the—" I almost slipped up, catching myself just in time.

"What?" Cypher asked, his brow furrowing in curiosity.

"Nothing," I said quickly, changing the topic. "Come to think of it, this is our second time fighting for our lives on the brink of death. Haha."

Cypher just stared at me, his expression a mix of confusion and concern.

"What? Is there something on my face?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You’re really weird. Who has the guts to laugh in the face of death?" he replied, shaking his head slightly.

I shrugged, a grin still on my face. "I guess I just have a different way of coping with danger."

Cypher’s eyes suddenly flashed with a strange glint, then disappeared as quickly as it came, leaving me to wonder what he was thinking.

The monster finally regained its vision, its eyes locking onto us with renewed fury.

"Ready?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

He nodded silently, gripping his sword tightly. Without hesitation, Cypher charged forward first, his blade flashing brightly in the sunlight as he swung at the dragon’s thick scales. Despite his relentless assault, he couldn’t seem to land a critical hit—its hide was too tough, its scales too resilient.

I kept my gaze sharp, analyzing the beast’s movements, waiting for the perfect moment. I knew that the key to defeating the dragon lay in its weak spot—its heart.

As Cypher struck again, I saw my opportunity. The monster was distracted, its attention focused on Cypher’s relentless assault. I darted forward, my dagger flashing in the sunlight as I aimed for the dragon’s heart.

With a swift motion, I lunged at the beast, my dagger poised for the critical strike. The dragon roared in pain as my dagger struck hard, piercing through the protective scales and sinking deep into its flesh.

It stumbled backward, its body writhing in agony as it tried to recover from the sudden blow. The roar echoed through the area.

Cypher took advantage of the distraction, his sword biting deep into the dragon’s tough scales. The beast thrashed wildly, its massive body writhing in agony as it desperately tried to shake off its attackers.

Shuk!

Shuk!

Shuk!

But we were relentless. Cypher and I pressed our assault, striking again and again at the creature’s vulnerable spot—its weakened heart—until finally, with a thunderous thud, the dragon collapsed to the ground, defeated, its roar fading into a final, echoing silence.

I stood tall, my dagger still trembling with excitement as I gazed down at the monster. Cypher grinned grimly as he approached me, his sword arm still trembling with exertion.

Meanwhile, Cypher’s teammates watched the entire battle with wide eyes and mouths agape, utterly awestruck by what they had just witnessed.

"How did they...?" someone murmured, still trying to process what they had just witnessed.

"I heard that the Crimson Scourge is an Advanced Rank Grade 2," another teammate chimed in, shaking their head in disbelief.

"Exactly! How did they manage to defeat it with just the two of them?" a third person questioned, eyes still wide.

"Woah..." someone else breathed out, unable to contain their amazement.

"I’m really impressed—her dagger dealt that final blow," another remarked, pointing at Remillia.

"Do you think I should switch my main weapon to a dagger also?" another teammate pondered aloud.

"That’s crazy..." someone concluded, shaking their head in wonder.

Throughout this, I paid no mind to their chatter. Cypher gently helped me down from the creature’s body, and we both collapsed onto the ground, utterly exhausted. Our bodies were bloodied and battered from the fierce battle, the blood spattering as we struck the dragon’s heart.

"That was... exciting and exhausting at the same time," I murmured, catching my breath.

Cypher looked at me with a tired but grateful expression. "Remi... I’ll just call you Remi since your full name’s too long to say every time. Anyway, thanks for helping me again. I owe you a big favor this time."

Hearing the word ’favor’ sent a thrill through me. I closed my eyes, savoring the feeling — it felt like a weight had lifted, like I’d just received something precious and rare. The sense of gratitude and camaraderie washed over me, and I couldn’t help but smile, even amidst the fatigue.

Just as I was about to drift into a short nap, my smartwatch blared loudly, its alarm echoing through the quiet cave. Soon, all the others’ smartwatches joined in, breaking the silence and jolting me awake. Groggy, I lifted my right hand, only to find it stuck to the ground as if glued. I struggled again, trying to free it.

’What’s happening?’ I thought, panic creeping in as I realized I couldn’t move. My Spectral Seal, which I had used to defeat the boss, was exhausted. Without it, I was effectively immobilized. Luckily, I could still move my mouth.

’But why haven’t I received any system notification?’ I questioned internally, confusion swirling.

[Ah. That’s because your Spectral Seal was ALMOST exhausted. That means you still have a bit left. It wasn’t completely depleted,] the system explained in my head.

I gritted my teeth, trying to suppress the urge to shout out in frustration.

’Next time... remind me when my Spectral Seal is nearly out of energy to stop before I push it too far, okay?’ I thought calmly instead of shouting internally.

[K,] the system replied, its tone almost nonchalant.

’What a useless syste—’ I began to think, but the system interrupted.

[Do you want me to stop functioning?] it retorted, a hint of sass in its response.

’Oh come on. I was just joking. How can I live without you?’ I thought, trying to smooth over the tension.

[Bow down, peasant,] the system replied, its tone dripping with mockery.

I bit my tongue to stop myself from retorting again, knowing that arguing with the system would only lead to more frustration. Instead, I focused on the ringing smartwatches, trying to piece together what was happening.
