Chapter 100: Preparations and Unanswered Questions

The moment King Noor stepped inside his own palace throne room his gaze swept quickly over his family members. He looked at his wife Queen.

He looked at his injured sons Raven and Leonard.

He looked at his loyal Commander Charles. The sight that greeted him the tired worried faces the injuries confirmed his deepest fears. A look of stark and immediate concern etched itself onto his face.

He could tell with a sinking heavy heart that his greatest nightmare regarding the stability of his kingdom had likely come true. The kingdom was in trouble during his absence.

Without uttering a single word about his own terrible ordeal in the Empire without mentioning Eric’s situation or the Emperor King Noor walked forward with a heavy tread.

He went to his royal seat and seated himself upon his throne. Everyone present the Queen his sons and Commander Charles stared at him.

Their expressions were a mixture of shock at his sudden unexpected appearance and a desperate flickering hope that he could fix things.

As King Noor settled onto the throne his regal bearing his kingly presence reasserted itself despite his deep weariness. He spoke his voice firm and full of authority.

"I will explain all the details about what happened in the Empire later. First I need you to apprise me of what is happening in our kingdom. Tell me everything."

The Queen and the others wanted to ask about Eric.

They were desperate to know what had transpired in the Empire.

But they respected the King’s immediate and pressing command.

They understood his priority. So they began to recount the dire dangerous events that had unfolded in Estoria while he was away.

The scene shifted.

Several days had passed since King Noor’s return to Estoria. Eric and Alina were now residing in their assigned dormitory rooms within the vast Imperial Palace complex in the Empire’s capital.

They rarely ventured outside the confines of their quarters. Their needs for food and other things were mostly attended to by servants within the dormitory.

During these quiet days Alina had dedicated herself completely to study. She was poring over the books that Eric had brought with him from their kingdom.

She diligently tried to absorb as much theoretical knowledge as possible. She was constantly asking Eric questions about complex historical precedents and difficult theories.

Her focused effort her hard work was paying off. Her understanding of the theoretical subjects required for the Academy’s entrance examination was rapidly improving.

She was now feeling confident that she could comfortably pass the written theoretical part of the exam.

Eric and Alina were both in the common room of their dormitory. Eric sat holding the sword his father had given him before they left Estoria for the Empire.

He was examining its balance its weight and the craftsmanship of the blade. Suddenly he looked up at Alina.

"Alina," he said his voice thoughtful and a little hesitant.

Alina who was seated at a table nearby was still engrossed in her studies. She looked up from her book her finger marking her place.

"What happened to me in that meeting room with the Emperor?" Eric asked. His gaze was direct looking straight at her. "Can you tell me? I don’t remember much."

Alina was quite surprised by Eric’s sudden question. Why was he asking about this now after all this time had passed? She took a deep breath trying to compose herself to think of what to say.

"Why are you asking about this all of a sudden Prince Eric?" she countered. There was a hint of caution a carefulness in her voice. She wasn’t sure how much she should tell him.

Eric looked at Alina his expression serious. "Let me tell you the truth Alina," he said his voice low so only she could hear. "Whatever I did in that meeting room... whatever power I showed... that wasn’t really me. I don’t know how it happened."

Eric had expected Alina to be shocked by this admission. He thought she might even be frightened by it. But her reaction was... strangely calm. She didn’t look surprised at all.

Alina let out another slow breath as if she had been holding it. "I know Third Prince," she said quietly her voice soft.

A flicker of annoyance crossed Eric’s face. It was a small thing but it bothered him. "I’ve told you many times to just call me Eric," he said a touch of exasperation in his tone. "We are friends now aren’t we?"

Alina continued her gaze steady and unwavering. "Whatever you did there in that room or rather whatever it did... just know that it saved our kingdom. It saved your life. And especially it saved the King’s life."

"Your father is safe because of it. Beyond that, knowing that outcome I don’t think you need to know anything more. Perhaps it is better not to know everything."

Eric was a little surprised by her firm yet strangely reassuring response. He thought about what she said for a moment. Perhaps Alina is right. I don’t need to know more than that. The outcome was good.

Father is safe. I am safe. We are going to the Academy. The memories or rather the lack of clear memories of what Adam did were unsettling. But the outcome the result of Adam’s actions had been undeniably favorable for them.

As Eric was pondering this thinking about Alina’s words the [System Window] suddenly appeared before him. It shimmered into existence a familiar blue screen.

"[Host]" the familiar emotionless voice of Millennia resonated in his mind. "[Each time I take control of your body your powers, your abilities are stimulated. They grow stronger. Don’t you want to check how much more powerful you have become now after the recent events?]"

As Eric heard the [System Window]’s words a spark of curiosity ignited within him. The prospect of increased power especially after the terrifying helplessness he had felt in the Emperor’s council room was undeniably alluring.

It was a tempting thought. He stood up abruptly from his chair. An idea suddenly struck him. He had been so focused on Alina’s studies he hadn’t thought much about his own preparations.

He looked at Alina a new energy in his eyes a sudden enthusiasm. "Alina," he said "why don’t we also prepare for the physical part of the entrance exam? The Academy tests fighting skills too doesn’t it?"

Alina who had been so focused on the theoretical subjects on reading books and memorizing facts suddenly realized she had completely neglected the physical requirements for the Academy.

A look of mild panic crossed her face. She stood up from her chair with a jolt knocking her book to the floor.

"The physical exam?" she exclaimed her eyes wide with sudden worry.

"What does that involve? What do we have to do? And why didn’t you tell me about it sooner Eric?! We have only been studying books!" She looked at him a little accusingly but also with a new sense of urgency. They had more work to do.
