Chapter 96: A Father’s Relief
As King Noor walked closer to Eric the worry and fear that had been clearly written on Eric’s young face began to fade away. It was like a dark cloud lifting.
A deep profound sense of relief and a dawning if still confused satisfaction started to show instead. Eric didn’t know exactly what had happened inside the council chamber after he had lost consciousness.
He didn’t remember the details of that conversation he vaguely recalled having with the [System Window].
But he knew one thing with absolute complete certainty.
The [System Window] had kept its promise. It had done what he had begged it to do. It had saved them.
Just moments ago Eric had been totally convinced that his own death was certain. And what was far more painful to him his father’s death also seemed inevitable.
He had seen no way out. There was no possibility of escape from the Emperor’s harsh judgment.
Yet somehow against all odds against all logic the [System Window] had stepped in.
It had in some way he couldn’t understand swayed the Almighty Emperor. It had bent the will of the most powerful being on the entire continent. It was like a miracle.
Eric wouldn’t dare to question the [System Window] about how it had managed to do this. He wouldn’t ask for the specific details. He now looked at the [System Window] with a new mixture of feelings.
He felt awe at its incredible power immense gratitude for saving them. It was a mysterious unfathomable entity a power beyond his understanding. And he was now deeply indebted to it.
He owed it everything.
King Noor finally reached Eric. He placed both his hands firmly on his son’s shoulders. His gaze searched Eric’s face. He was looking for any sign of injury.
His eyes showed a mixture of overwhelming relief and a lingering concern that hadn’t quite disappeared yet.
"Eric," King Noor asked his voice thick with emotion his relief making it a little unsteady "are you alright my son?"
Eric nodded his head. A small genuine smile touched his lips for the first time in what felt like a very long time.
"Father," he replied his own voice still a little shaky from everything that had happened but clear and understandable "I am perfectly fine. I am not hurt.....Are you alright?"
After hearing Eric’s response and seeing that his son seemed truly okay King Noor turned his gaze towards the Emperor.
Emperor Sir David was observing the exchange between the father and son with a calm unreadable expression on his face. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking.
King Noor bowed his head deeply before the Emperor. It was a gesture of profound respect and gratitude.
"Lord Emperor," he said his voice filled with sincere thankfulness "I will never forget this debt I owe you. Your mercy your forgiveness today is... immeasurable. I have no words to properly express my thanks."
The Emperor offered a slight almost enigmatic smile. It was a small smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Do not worry about it King Noor," he replied. His tone was surprisingly mild gentle even.
"But I will tell you this. Your son... he is quite special." The Emperor’s gaze then shifted from King Noor to Eric. A flicker of something like respect intrigue appeared in his eyes as he looked at the young prince.
"He possesses so much potential so much hidden strength that he could in the future if he works hard and develops his abilities even surpass me."
This statement coming from the Emperor himself the strongest man on the continent sent a collective shockwave through all the assembled kings and their entourages. It was like an earthquake shaking the ground beneath them.
Mouths fell open in surprise. Gasps of disbelief were quickly stifled. People couldn’t believe what they were hearing.
It was one thing for various kingdoms to boast about their own promising young individuals. It was common for kings to claim that one of their own princes or warriors had the potential to one day rival the Emperor in power.
Such claims were made all the time. But they were often dismissed by others as mere nationalistic pride or just wishful thinking. Their words carried little real weight in the grand scheme of things. No one took them too seriously.
But for the Emperor himself the undisputed pinnacle of power on the continent the man everyone looked up to or feared to single out an individual like this was unheard of.
For him to pick out a young prince from a relatively modest and not overly powerful kingdom like Estoria and declare that this boy possessed the potential to surpass the Emperor himself... that was an entirely different matter.
It was not just a comment. It was like an anointing a special blessing. It was a pronouncement from the highest authority that instantly elevated Eric in the eyes of everyone present.
A seed of respect perhaps even a seed of fear for Eric had been planted in their minds. They would not forget this boy. They would watch him.
King James of the Roland Kingdom upon hearing the Emperor’s startling words felt a fresh wave of cold dread wash over him. It was a chilling feeling.
He along with his son the First Prince and his daughter Princess Lily all stared at Eric.
Their minds were reeling with different yet equally alarming thoughts.
Their plans their hopes for Roland’s dominance now seemed much more uncertain.
King James’s mind raced. I must find a way to eliminate this Third Prince Eric, he thought. A desperate urgency gripped him.
His earlier feelings of triumph when Eric was sentenced had completely vanished. Now there was only a growing fear.
If the Emperor himself says this about the boy and considering the incredible power we witnessed earlier in the council room... this Third Prince Eric could create immense problems for our kingdom of Roland in the future.
He is a threat. He is a danger that cannot be ignored or underestimated.
His earlier triumph had curdled into a bitter fearful resolve. He needed to ensure Eric never reached that prophesied potential that the Emperor spoke of.
He had to stop him no matter the cost. The future of Roland depended on it.
