Chapter 12: Get Your Own Tools

I didn't sleep for that one hour as I was afraid I would be late so I just laid down and rested, not moving a muscle. When it was about 12.50pm I got up from the bed and went out, heading towards the fields outside the village.

When I arrived I noticed there were couple of people working on the fields. One of the farmers came over to me and said "Your job is to plough the earth in this area, Do you know how to plough?" to which I answered "No"

He said "Then I will show you how it is supposed to be done, follow me" he then moved to an area of earth and demonstrated how to plough the ground. He used a tool called hoe that looked like a spade's blade but the handle was at a 90 degree angle. He struck the ground with it making a grove and continued one hit after the other.

The ground resembled tunnels dug by animals. He then explained to me that when I finish one line, I can start another one. The new line should be done a few centimetres away from the previous one. He demonstrated that too.

After asking "Do you understand?" I nodded my head and reached my hand out for the hoe. The farmer looked at me and said "What do you want?" I replied "The tool? What else?" he started laughing as if I said something funny and said "This is mine, if you want yours make it yourself or buy one. I don't care either way". I narrowed my eyes and asked "So how am I supposed to do this task then?", the farmer replied "I don't care, use whatever you want. It's not my problem how you do it"

I knew there will be problems, why wouldn't there be? So they wouldn't even provide tools for me. I guessed that they wanted me to do it with my hands, these bastards. I didn't start the work immediately. I searched the fields for something suitable but found nothing besides stones. I though 'Stone is better than my bare hands' and so I picked a sizable one then started to plough.

I had enough of ploughing after just one hour. Using a stone wasn't helping but at least I wasn't damaging my hands otherwise I would probably not be able to move them tomorrow. There were still couple of hours left till 5pm and so I took regular breaks to let my hands rest. I was quite surprised that no one demanded from me to work constantly but hell I wouldn't anyway even if they gave me tools.

This way I finally managed to reach the end of my tasks for that day. I threw the stone into the field and left, not saying anything to other people in the field. I was too tired to do anything and so I decided to go back to my temporary home to eat my dinner and rest for a while.

When I arrived I noticed the food one the table. It was two stale breads and two bowls of porridge. I was surprised by the amount but didn't linger around thinking about it and started devouring the food. I then laid down on my bed and rested.

At about 6.30pm I left the house and went to see the river. When I arrived it was quiet and serene. I looked at the river's surface and noticed some fish swimming around. 'Good, there are fishes here' I thought to myself. I just needed to have a some sort of net or fishing rod to be able to fish.

I figured that fishing rod is less effective because I would have to wait and maybe I will be able to catch something. I would also need the bait. With nets I would need nothing but time. The problem was, how to create a net? If I had a rope or something it would be possible. The other possibility was flexible branches and because I could not get any type of string or rope I would have to use that.

It was worth a try, I was already proficient with wood due to my experiences with the forest. I wasn't allowed to go to the forest alone but there were many shrubs and trees around the village. After 30 minutes I managed to get enough branches to try and form a net.

But because it was already past 7pm it was getting dark. Even if I were to finish the net it would be impossible to fish something then. I left the pile of branches near the river and decided to wash myself. It was already a while since I did that therefore without hesitation I jumped into the river and relaxed a bit.

After perhaps 2 or 3 minutes I could hear voices getting closer to the river. I quickly jumped out and put on my clothes. Just in time as the people I heard were already about 20 metres away from my location. From afar I could see that they were young, maybe even my age or younger. I was 18 at that time. I don't know why I didn't mention that till now, maybe because it was useless for you my reader while now it serves its purpose.

I noticed two young men and one young woman. They also noticed me already. I just picked up my stuff, HA as if I had any and went off in different direction. I wanted nothing to do with these people. Who knew what kind of stupid plans they had this time. Although I tried moving out of their way they still had to find trouble with me. One of the young men shouted "Hey you slave, stop" I, on the other hand ignored him. This was my free time and I had no obligation to talk with them nor to complete any tasks for them. The paper I got from the old man stated I couldn't harm them but it said nothing about me doing stuff for them.

So I just left. Yet they wouldn't give up and shouted one after the other "Stop you stupid slave, are you deaf?" "Fucking slave, come over here" I wasn't provoked, I still tried to leave. Then they started to throw taunts at me "Are you scared, slave?" "Look at him already pissing his pants" but I wasn't impressed. They finally stopped following me and I arrived at my temporary residence.

I swore to myself that these people will pay for it after I was out of here. I vowed to myself 'I will return here when I'm stronger and more experienced then we will see who is a slave'. I was angry but after swearing couple of times and making empty threads I went to sleep. I would have to repeat what I did today and I would need strength for that.
