Chapter 38: The Reenactment of a Classic

Chapter 38: The Reenactment of a Classic

Pasha Callerga struggled to comprehend what had just happened. It felt like the Khitan Caesar had merely tossed a spear… then their formation was suddenly bunched together like a skewer of candied hawthorn?

This was ridiculous!

Is that even the feat of a human? A spear tossed by a human actually has the strength of a ballista?!

Shu Yichao soon proved that he was different from a ballista—his attacking speed was much faster than a ballista.

Shoosh!

Yet another black blur whizzed forth, followed by screams and splattering blood. Another column of soldiers collapsed.

The Morean spearmen couldn’t believe their eyes. They had positioned themselves close enough to the Khitan Caesar and his troops so that their arrows would have limited destructive prowess, but the latter was still able to exert the force of a ballista with his spear?

The person before them was clearly a monster!

The third, fourth, and fifth spear followed in close succession.

It sounded as if a furious storm had fallen upon them. After the deafening gale died down, a soldier wiped off the fresh blood splattered on his face with trembling hands. Where his eyes could see, he saw comrades who had died with their eyes open in indignation.

In just a few seconds, he was the only one left standing in his platoon.

“Gulp!”

The Morean soldier watched as the Khitan Caesar raised another spear.

“AHHHHHHHHH!!!”

His bravery vanished without a trace. Unable to suppress his fear anymore, he let it all out in the form of an unrestrained scream.

He had served in the military for a decade now, but never had he seen anything as terrifying as this. This was not warfare; this was a massacre!

Overwhelmed by fear, he dropped his weapon and staggered backward.

This was the first domino tile to fall.

Following his example, his comrades also dropped their weapons, tossed aside their armor, and began fleeing frantically toward the entrance gate. The tight spearmen formation collapsed like that.

Honor? Glory?

None of those mattered to them in this instant. The only thought in their mind was to run. They had to run as far away as possible, to a place where the Khitan Caesar would never find them!

“Ah?!”

Shu Yichao, who had yet to toss his sixth spear out, was shocked to see the neat spearmen formation crumbling all of a sudden. “What’s going on? It’s rare to encounter such a formation, so I thought it would be a good chance to farm some ranged experience points. Why did they suddenly flee? Chase them!”

To Pasha Callerga’s despair, his plan to kill the Khitan Caesar failed miserably.

The remnant soldiers who were intended as bait were gobbled up whole by Shu Yichao.

The elite Morean soldiers whom he had been so confident about were frightenedly fleeing with tears on their faces, as Shu Yichao and his cavalrymen chased and slaughtered them.

“Those bastards!” Pasha Callerga was furious. “Morean soldiers, stand your ground and fight! Stop fleeing! You bunch of cowards! How dare you call yourselves warriors of the true God?”

None of the Morean soldiers paid any heed to Pasha Callerga’s roars.

The latter hadn’t had enough time to build up respect with this army, so it was only normal that no one would pay him any heed in this moment of despair.

“Open the city gate!”

“Hurry up and open the gate!”

Some of the faster Morean soldiers swarmed the entrance of the gate, crying, scolding, and pleading.

“I’m begging you, please don’t block us out here! Don’t make us confront that demon!”

“Don’t open the gate!” Pasha Callerga roared.

If he refused to open the gate, the Morean army might just muster their courage in this moment of despair to fight desperately against the Khitans.

Chk chk chk—

The metal chains slowly rose, as a small gap appeared in the gates.

“Who did it?!” Pasha Callerga was infuriated.

The soldier, who had unconsciously raised the gate after hearing the pleas of the Morean soldiers, shuddered upon hearing Pasha Callerga’s voice, and he quickly stopped what he was doing.

However, it was already too late.

The small gap in the gate was a ray of hope for the Morean soldiers, the slim chance they had at surviving this ordeal. They desperately flocked over and tried squeezing their way in.

When two of the skinnier Morean soldiers managed to slip in, the situation further spiraled out of control.

“Lower the gate! Lower the gate right now!” Pasha Callerga roared.

Bam!

The heavy gate was put down.

The Morean soldiers, who were desperately trying to squeeze through the tiny crack, screamed when the heavy gate suddenly fell on them.

However, the gap didn’t disappear.

“Pasha!” The soldier who lowered the gate replied with a quivering voice, “The gate is jammed.”

“…” Pasha Callerga was so angry that he nearly fainted.

【My host, what’s going on?】

System 12345 asked.

【The Second Imperial Consort is here. Her big brother is here. There are many powerful officials and nobles gathered here too. The atmosphere seems quite lively.】

【My host, have you begun your performance? But it’s only been a short while since I sent the screenplays over… Are you that confident?】

System 12345 gave the matter some thought.

【Well, it shouldn’t come as a surprise since those screenplays are timeless classics! Hehehe! You seem to be making good progress.】

【Most people are hyped about it, especially the Second Imperial Consort and her big brother! They are so excited that they might just faint on the spot!】

【All the best, hostie~】

System 12345 laughed.

【Let them have a taste of the otherworld’s tragedies! Make them cry their hearts out!】

Shu Yichao and his Elite Horse Archers surrounded the panicking Morean soldiers and slowly closed in on them, as if a noose gradually tightening around their necks.

“Bastards! These swines can’t be relied on!” Pasha Callerga screamed hoarsely.

With reddened eyes, he ran to the cannons on the walls and shouted, “Listen up, cannoneers! Fire your cannons as soon as the Khitan Caesar gets close to the pits!”

His plan had already been thrown into disarray, so he could only pray that he could somehow achieve his primary objective…

So, Pasha Callerga anxiously watched the battlefield with reddened eyes.

“He’s coming!”

When he saw Shu Yichao approaching one of the pits, as he had envisioned, his heart began beating furiously. If this cannon really hits the Khitan Caesar…

【Holy bugs! The Second Imperial Consort’s big brother is getting really agitated!】

System 12345 exclaimed.

【My host, have you reached the climax of the screenplay?!】

“Haa!”

Shu Yichao stabbed his spear forth, lifted up one of the Morean soldiers, and tossed him aside. He did the same for the second and third soldier too. Some tried to fight back, but they couldn’t even nick his clothes.

It was as if Shu Yichao was untouchable on the battlefield.

“As goes my spear goes the war!” he shouted.

“Hm?” Shu Yichao suddenly noticed a pit ahead of him. “Why would they dig a pit here?”

This perplexed him. “None of my cavalrymen dropped in. Rather, quite a number of their soldiers have fallen in instead.”

All of a sudden, warning bells rang in his mind.

He raised his head and looked at the city walls, where he was a red-eyed Ottomain commander glaring at him with a warped face. Beside the Ottomain commander, a black cannon was aimed directly at him.

“Hmph!” Pasha Callerga sneered. “Khitan Caesar! It’s time for you to die!

“Fire!”

Boom!
