Chapter 153 The end.

"How long? From the moment you took over. I knew about it already." Nova calmly answered him.

Evan was still not in his sane mind, even his technique to calm his mind wasn't working on him.

'She knew it from the very beginning...? Does that mean, this body is mine? If so then what about me from before? That wasn't me? What is going on? Hey, system, answer me, you picked this body for me. Did you know about it?!'

He asked, staring at the blue screen that was popping before him, but not a single word appeared on it.

'Answer me damn it, why did you pick this body for me? And what is this second personality she is talking about?'

He yelled at the screen frustratingly, and finally, after that, the system began to speak again.

[You knew it already host. It was mentioned before that this body holds a similar potential as you in your previous life.]

'So my life was real then... but what is this about this second personality? Am I that personality?'

[No, host. That isn't you. You have been merged with Evan, and both you and his personality have become one. But you are not that other personality.]

'Then who...'

[I cannot talk about it, Evan. I have neither the ability nor the strength to speak of him. If I even try to do so, then I will die right this instant.]

It said firmly. It was the first time the system called him by his name and not host. There was dread in its voice and a hint of fear as well.

'If just stating its name is enough to kill the system, then... what kind of existence is my other personality?'

He couldn't imagine what it was; the only thing he could think of was...

'Is it this unknown that I have?'

[...]

He tried to confirm, but the silence from the system was enough to make him realise that it was definitely it.

'So till now, all the quests that I am getting and the penalty that I might receive is all for my second personality?'

He asked, but the system didn't utter anything again.

'Then the scene when me and Celestina were inside the bathroom that day... that was unknown? He took over me for a second and I felt so powerless that time...'

He expressed. He felt so much powerful at that moment but he wasn't in control of his body.

"Are you talking with your system again?" Nova asked Evan, seeing that he wasn't saying anything at all.

And just like the system, he didn't utter a single word to Nova. How can he say that what she was thinking of him was incorrect? How could he explain to her that her brother has been merged with him now and his will doesn't remain any longer?

"You can talk to me about that, you know. I am not your big sister in name only. You can share anything with me."

She lovingly looked at him, her heart feeling calm after finally revealing something that only she had known till now. And she lovingly rested her head on his shoulder while wrapping his entire body.

'She is telling me that with such a smile... these emotions in my heart, why am I feeling this? All of her affection isn't for me. I am just an imposter that has been living the life of someone that I shouldn't be living as... this is not for me.'

From the moment he has transmigrated, it was the thing bugging him. Living with his family, he can feel their love and care for him and that feeling is mutual for him as well.

He also loves them and cares for them dearly, but that won't change anything. His love for them cannot change the fact that he doesn't belong here.

This is not his family, and the woman who is so lovingly clinging to her brother, the love that she is showering him with, he doesn't have any rights to it at all.

'If this ends here, then let it be... but I do not think I can keep her in delusion any more. I may have to separate from them, but I will do it. My heart will feel at rest after doing this.'

He decided to reveal this to her right now. Not fearing he might have to go away from them.

But in a sense, it was good for them as well. With his second personality thing, he doesn't think that they will be safe if he ever fails a quest.

Ding~

Then as if responding to his wish, a notification rang in his head.

[Quest: Be truthful, reveal your past to Nova.

Reward: A forgotten memory

Penalty: Devoured by unknown]

But he didn't spare any glance at the system. He didn't even care about the kind of quest he received.

"Nova..." he called solemnly.

She didn't look at him and just hummed at his calling. Right now, she didn't mind him calling her by her name at all.

"I am not your brother." He said.

"I know."

His heart was beating the fastest it had ever been. Only now did he realise how much importance this family holds in his heart. The fear of losing them was coming to him.

But he was willing to go for it, now.

"You don't understand. I am not your little brother. I am just an imposter who has taken over his body."

"I know."

"What?! Why are you not understanding me?" He now was getting impatient. His heart felt heavy seeing that she wasn't feeling anything at all.

He then snapped and grabbed her shoulder and looked at her straight in her eyes.

"Listen to me properly, Nova. I am not what you think I am, I am not your brother nor the other personality that you think of. I am someone who took over this body. I do not have any relations with you or your family; I am an imposter who is just pretending to be your brother."

He expressed everything he had in his heart, but Nova didn't even flinch. He himself didn't realise that tears began to roll down his cheeks.

The fear of losing everything so dear to him was too much for him.

He only felt that he knew the worth his family held inside him but even that wasn't true. It was more than that.

The feelings of the previous Evan were still inside him; they both had become one from the very beginning, and their mind had become one already. So him thinking that it was only him controlling the body was wrong, it has always been they.

[Author's note: That isn't his pronoun BTW.]

She gently lifted her hands and cupped his face and looked at him with utmost affection.

"I know."

"Hmm?"

"I said I know."

She gently wiped the tears and said in a soft tone.

"Been so long since I have seen my little brother cry. Takes me back to the time you were so little that you could fit in my arms easily. And now, look at you, even after growing so big that it's hard for me to even reach you, you are still crying?"

Evan's eyes were wide open; he was confused as to what he even said.

Did his words even reach her ears, or did he say something entirely different?

"I heard you clearly, my dear brother. I can even tell how many hairs you have in your body, do you really think such a thing would escape my eyes? I have known about it ever since. I first wondered, why did your perspective suddenly change? Why were your thoughts different? You began to show changes in your behaviour as well, but deep inside you were still the same. I even sucked your blood that time to see if what I felt was right or not and it was correct. Also, I have seen it all: how you went to Celestina when she was in that dungeon and how you felt when Mother told you about our past... an imposter would never feel or do anything that you did. So don't blame yourself for taking anyone's place. You both are one."

'She knew about it ever since? How?'

"Nov..." And just as he was about to ask how she knew that, Nova stopped him and looked at him sharply.

"Three times... if you say my name another time again, then..."

She then looked away and began to speak again.

"Hope you won't be depressed anymore. This is your family and has been forever. So don't think of yourself as an outsider. And don't think too much about your quest, the power you hold is much greater than what you can imagine. Your quests won't make much of an difference on you anyway. You must have noticed my cultivation and stats, right? With your eyes of all things? We have been here for almost 18 years now... and I was 5 years old when we arrived here. Don't you find it absurd that I have such high stats? When I haven't increased them inside the tower and dungeons?"

She looked at Evan suggestively but looking at his face, she knew he had no idea of what she was talking about.

"Well, you will know soon enough, that's what that system has been telling you all along, right? If it says that, then it might be true."

She shook her head while saying that and looked at Evan tilting her head.

"Was that a shock to you?" She asked.

Evan was still struck to even open his mouth and was blankly staring at her.

The only thought inside his head was...

'How?'

"That's a secret." She smiled mischievously and replied to him as if she was reading his thoughts.

"Let's go now. We have to get to the tower and look for her."

Saying that, she pulled him with her, and both of them disappeared from their place.

After going away, the system spoke inside Evan's mind.

[Congratulations, host. You have completed the quest. Your reward for the forgotten memory will be delivered to you soon.]

It was the notification for his completion of the quest.

After hearing all of what Nova said, Evan began to ponder hard about himself and his quests.

'Hey, system. Who gave you to me? Answer me honestly as this will be the last time I will be asking you this. And what are these quests? They aren't simply my desires... who is giving me the quests?'

He asked firmly. Before, he wasn't always so serious about all of his quests but now that Nova has revealed so many things about him, he couldn't help but think hard about it.

[...]

'Are you going to stay silent again? Fine then. I won't be asking you anything like this anymore.'

He was disappointed, not just in the system but in himself, too. He does not know anything at all, whether it's about him or things related to him. The only one he can rely on is the system and even that isn't being of any help right now.

But then, after a brief moment, the system finally spoke...

[It's not that I don't want to answer this to you, host. But I have no idea about the things you are asking me. If you ask me who you are? Then I know about it, but I can't reveal that to you, but if you ask me who gave this system to you? Then I don't know. I do not know that existence, but I know only one thing, it holds no harm to you. Besides this, I have no knowledge or information that I can provide you. It's up to you to believe me or not.]

The system also expressed its words. It was hard for Evan not to believe that after how it said that.

So, he decided not to push the matter forward any longer.

While talking with the system, both of them already reached the tower.

It wasn't as crowded as it used to be on Earth, but the people around it were no joke.

It was a massive building without any end.

"Shall we head inside now?" Nova asked looking at Evan.

"Umm, let's go." Evan nodded his head and walked towards the tower.

***Evan's POV***

Standing in front of the tower made me look like an ant. It was simply too huge.

Before I only had the chance to look at it from afar, but now I am standing in front of it.

All of the things just a moment ago weren't anything that I had been expecting, but Nova's words made me realise that I am still me and I belong to this new family of mine.

This family and the people at home, all of them are my own. And I have to make sure that it stays like that forever.

For that, I am going to conquer this tower now.

"Shall we head inside now?"

"Umm, let's go."

I took my steps towards the tower. It was the beginning of a new journey for me.

The entrance of the tower wasn't a gate or anything; it was a blue mirror-like thing and with my knowledge about the voids, I can tell it was a portal.

A portal to take us to a difficult world.

This chapter is updat𝙚d by freeweɓnovel.cøm.

Nova held my hands and was guiding me towards it. A feeling of comfort was there even when she was taking the initiative to guide me.

And then both of us entered the portal.

After entering the portal, a different... an unknown emotion filled my heart.

It felt eerie.

A chilly atmosphere.

The scene before me was completely dark as if it was an entirely different place.

I realised that instantly that it wasn't the floor 1 of the tower.

It was a different place. But what was it?

And before I could think of something, I saw a figure...

Dark hairs covering his face, blood all over his body, a hunched back, tattered clothes. He had two pairs of horns similar to me in my demonic form.

He was holding a vibrant sword in his right hand that was brimming with an unknown might that I couldn't even sense.

On his left was the body of a woman with long blue hair.

He looked pained...

Looking at him slowly coming at me, I couldn't even move my body.

As he got closer, I began to feel it more clearly...

He was in pain, despair filled his heart, and he had gone insane.

I could hear very faint noises. They were too low for me to hear them.

"Who are you?"

They were so faint and low that you might not even hear them.

As he came near me, he lifted his right hand and swung his sword at me.

Everything turned slow for me as if the time itself had gone slow.

When he lifted his sword, he looked at me. He had rainbow-coloured eyes, but there was no light in them.

It seemed as if he had lost all his hopes. And as his sword crashed down at me, he whispered two last words.

"Forgive me."

And his sword slashed my head apart.

Everything ended right there.
