Chapter 4: Loveless Marriage (2)

“No.” Chen Jinyao answered him without pausing. There was no semblance of a self-conscious wife who cared for her husband’s feelings.

‘If I say one, my wife wouldn’t dare say two,’ was the claim Yan Cheng boasted in front of Shao Chongsi when they were blasting music at Er Guan.

And Shao Chongsi, this troublemaker, was standing right beside him.

Yan Cheng: “….” ouch, my face hurts a bit…

(T/N: 脸 face = reputation)

Perhaps her refusal was too straightforward, causing her to have a bit of conscience. Chen Jinyao reasoned with him and said: “Do you think it’s appropriate for a gentleman to let a lady step out in the middle of the night? You’re already in there anyways, nothing’s going to happen. You’ll be fine if you stay there a few more hours.”

After a pause, she added calmly: “Be patient. I’ll come see you tomorrow morning.

“Alright.” Yan Cheng compromised and replied carelessly.

After he hung up, Shao Chongsi peeked at him but couldn’t guess Yan Cheng’s mood. He wanted to ask about the situation but he didn’t want to disturb his friend either.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t control his curiosity and his loose mouth opened: “Is sister-in-law coming?”

Most people have the same mentality; they like to be nosy.

Yan Cheng crossed his long legs and knitted his brows. There’s no way he would lose face by admitting that he was ‘abandoned.’ After a while, he replied but his voice was a bit rushed: “No.”

Shao Chongsi raised his brows in surprise. He really wasn’t expecting this kind of result.

Yan Cheng licked his lips for a moment, trying to cover up his unease. He explained, “It’s too late and unsafe. I told her not to come.”

“When did you say that? I didn’t hear you.” Shao Chongsi wasn’t buying it.

“…” This kind of bluntness was like a slap in the face. It was especially uncomfortable. Yan Cheng took a deep breath to stabilize his fluctuating mood. He lazily lifted his eyelids and looked straight at him. The implication was obvious in his stare: ‘It’s none of your business!”

Shao Chongsi quickly changed the topic. “If not, should I bail you out?”

……

Later that night, it began to snow in the capital. The snowfall was scattered at first, but it gradually became heavier and heavier. When the city transitioned from night into day, it wasn’t the first ray of sunshine that awakened the slumbering citizens, but rather, the snow’s reflection.

A timely snowfall indicates that the coming year will reap a good harvest. The following year will probably bring good fortune.

The snow piled on the road, making it difficult for Chen Jinyao to leave the house. So she decided to wait for the snowfall to lighten up before she can downstairs and shovel the ice away from the driveway.

It was nine o’clock.

Only

Chen Jinyao looked out the glass window. The window was opened just a slit, allowing a sliver of biting wind to enter in. Du Ni kept rubbing against against her leg as he purred. Chen Jinyao glanced down at the cat and poked him lightly.

“I have to pick up your dad,” she said.

Before heading out, she listened to the cold wind whistling outside.

She moistened her lips, went to the closet room and grabbed a down jacket for Yan Cheng.

By the time she arrived at the police station near the city center, it was almost ten o’clock.

Chen Jinyao applied a bit of makeup to make herself look presentable.

After finding a parking spot, she unlocked her seatbelt and bent over to take the down jacket and handbag from the passenger’s seat. At the crosswalk, she waited for the pedestrian light to turn green before trotting across the street, straight to the police station’s entrance.

“Hello, officer. I’m here to find someone who came in yesterday. His name is Yan Cheng.”
