The Seven Sisters of Oil is a common term in the Western oil industry, referring to the three major oil companies and the other four major companies with international influence after the dissolution of the Rockefeller family Standard Oil Company. In 1975, a British journalist wrote a book on the history of oil in which the term Seven Sisters was coined. Since then, the Seven Sisters have become synonymous with the Western oil industry, also known as the International Oil Cartel.
