Chapter 14: More Than One

Chapter 14: More Than One

(Arata)

He offered me his hand to shake.

Unlike the usual CEO's the man was not shy of words. I accepted his large hand and felt the hard calloused skin against my soft one. He had a firm handshake but didn't try to crush mine.

The warmth of his skin seeped into mine before he let it go. I hadn't anticipated his hands to be this warm for a man so cold.

So the sex was off the table, did it mean I could date other people? Not that I was in a rush but I needed to clarify that.

"I am not obligated to remain faithful to you, right?" I asked, dragging my hands away and placing them back into my lap. This needed to be addressed, I didn't want to be stuck with him while he whored around and I remained celibate.

His heart-shaped lips tugged into what seemed like a half-smirk, half-amusement.

"Sure, if you can be discreet. There are plenty of callboys to fulfil the carnal needs. Women use them all the time. No big deal." He shrugged his large shoulders at me as if this was a very casual conversation. The half-smirk turned into a cockish grin.

Heat soared into my cheeks and I blushed so hard that I was sure even a tomato couldn't rival me.

Bastard.

I was going to show him.

"I didn't ask for your advice on the matter... Sir," I gave a meaningful pause before Sir showing it wasn't out of respect. "Just that it's only fair that both of us shouldn't be tied to each other. It's only pretend."

The smile flattened at my retort. Not many people answered back, it seemed.

"Your private life is none of my concern, Miss Arata, as long as it doesn't interfere with mine and no one finds out what you are up to. You just need to keep the end of your bargain."

He began drumming his heavy fingers on the clean desk. This man was going to test all of my patience, at least he was handsome or I would want to scratch his face.

"It won't, I take my commitments seriously and can be discreet."

"Only time will tell. Miranda will show you to your office. Settle in and hold all my calls for now." He pulled out his phone from his pants pocket and typed on it. Placing it back down he dragged another file from the pile, opened it and began to read.

It was my cue to leave. Getting up I expressed my gratitude. It wasn't heartfelt but still.

"Thank you! I appreciate you accepting me in this position." He raised his head and the lightless orbs of his flickered towards me. I gulped, how they sucked the happiness in a split second.

Did the temperature drop by a few degrees? The air seemed chillier between us.

"Don't disappoint." The authority in his words shook my knees. I never knew a man's voice could affect me like this. I was not a meek person and was always bold with men but there was just something about Karsten.

Or maybe it was because I was usually in a position of power and now I was not.

"I won't..." I murmured.

'Jeez! Professor Snape. What a joy kill,' the next line I muttered under my breath and turned around to leave this dismal office of his.

Shutting the door behind me, I filled my cheeks with fresh oxygen which I didn't have to share with Mr Ice and let it out in relief while leaning against the wall.

"That bad?" Miranda's understanding voice came as she strode towards me on her long confident legs.

I waved both my hands. "No, I am fine."

She smiled in understanding. "Let me take you to your office."

We moved towards the elevator, I observed a door right in front of it. The door was painted teal. Miranda opened it and entered, I followed her.

"Welcome to your office," she announced with enthusiasm spreading her arms.

It was a large space with an ample-sized window on the opposite wall which had the same shade as the door but the tone was lighter and warmer, welcoming.

I slowly walked inside and began to observe.

The centrepiece of the space was a sleek, L-shaped desk made of polished walnut wood with a subtle sheen. A comfortable chair upholstered in black leather sat behind it, ensuring my comfort.

On the desk, rested a modern ZPS Ultra 13 laptop and a tablet of the same company.

A sleek black desk phone with a million buttons. A neatly organized tray held important documents, while an empty ceramic vase rested beside a small digital clock that also made up part of my desk accessories.

Of course, the time freak measured the time by seconds so a digital clock it had to be.

My head swivelled to the other side where a low cabinet with lockable drawers offered storage for confidential files, stationery, and personal belongings.

Above the desk, floating shelves in a matching walnut finish displayed a few books. The rest of it was empty for me to fill it up. A green pinboard alongside it held a calendar and my boss's food and coffee schedule. Empty note papers were pinned on it with thumbnails.

"So what do you think?" Miranda asked expectantly.

"I like it," I answered, taking a closer look around the place. It needed more life and colour but all in due time.

"Your office is right in front of the elevator so you can keep an eye on who arrives and who leaves. No unauthorised person is allowed on this floor but at times one of his mistresses does make their way up here to bother him. Don't let anyone in without his approval," she confided in me.

My eyes shot up. "He has more than one?"

Miranda pursed her lips to stifle the laugh about to burst out.

"Yeah! You will see. He changes them like napkins when he is in mood and sometimes there won't be anyone for months."

"Then why does he want me to act as his girlfriend? Can't he ask one of them?" I blurted out unable to hold myself back.
