Chapter 187: 187 Liu Kun’s Favor
Chapter 187: 187 Liu Kun’s Favor
Wanhua Company, General Manager’s Office.
Liu Kun leaned back in his chair, eyes closed, hands pressed against his forehead, gently massaging it. He appeared somewhat weary.
Buzz buzz…
The phone at the edge of the desk started vibrating. He reached out, took the phone, saw the name on the screen, felt a bit surprised, and sat up straight to answer the call.
“Chen Xu, what made you think to call me?”
On the other end, Chen Xu’s voice came through. “Mr. Liu, I’m sorry for calling at this time. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”
“What’s this about disturbing? Are you not considering me a friend?” Liu Kun laughed heartily. “I couldn’t find time to come to the opening of your new shop last time. If you open another new store, I’ll be there for sure.”
“You were already so busy, and yet you made a point to send a flower basket. I’m very grateful.”
“You’re just being too polite.” Liu Kun laughed and then got down to business. “There must be something on your mind for you to call me, right?”
“There is something I want to ask.”
“Go ahead.”
“There’s a company called Jinyun Catering Group Co., Ltd. that wants to partner with me to promote my noodle shop. I’m not sure if they are reliable.”
Liu Kun said, “Send me the company’s name, and I’ll have someone look into it. I’ll get back to you in a couple of days.”
“Thank you, Mr. Liu.”
“Really, if you want to thank me, stop calling me Mr. Liu all the time. Just call me Brother Liu.”
“Then, thank you, Brother Liu. I won’t bother you anymore.”
“Alright, that’s all for now.”
After hanging up the phone, Liu Kun’s index finger gently tapped on the armrest. Chen Xu’s call meant that the goodwill he had shown before was not in vain.
As for Chen Xu not asking Luo Xiyun but asking him instead, he didn’t find it strange. He had already seen that this young man had a strong sense of self-esteem and a high moral standard. Yet, he wasn’t old-fashioned; he understood the dangers of society and was measured in his actions.
He was the kind of person who wouldn’t actively harm others, nor did he wish to be harmed by anyone.
With someone like that, whether being friends or in business, at least you don’t have to worry about them stabbing you in the back.
Unfortunately, Chen Xu’s starting point was too low. At that level, such qualities wouldn’t help him succeed in his career.
However, sometimes, the way things work out in the world is quite amazing. Who would have thought that Luo Xiyun, such a pampered daughter of heaven, would take a fancy to an inconspicuous poor kid like him.
He used to be neighbors with the Luo family, and you could say he watched her grow up from a young age. He understood her well; she might seem proud and cold on the outside, but she was actually a person who valued relationships deeply. If she fell in love, she would surely fall hard.
So, when he noticed some indications, he showed goodwill to the suspected object, Chen Xu, establishing a good relationship in advance.
Of course, even if he was wrong, it was fine; it would not cost him anything.
Later on, the results proved his guess was correct. Now the effects were becoming apparent. To be honest, having a good relationship with Chen Xu might not be of any help to his career. His character and abilities did not seem to be of the sort that could turn around a business.
But having one more friend can open more paths, and considering his relationship with Luo Xiyun, there might be times in the future when he could be of help.
Chen Xu’s WeChat message came quickly.
“Xiao Lin, come in for a second.”
Liu Kun called his secretary in and instructed her, “Check the documents on this company, not just the ones on paper, but also their reputation and word of mouth within the industry, understand?”
“Jinyun Catering Group Co., Ltd?”
Xiao Lin saw the name of the company and looked puzzled. “Isn’t this a catering company? It has no business dealings with our company. Why are we checking on this?”
“Just go and check when you’re told to check.”
“Oh.” Xiao Lin saw that he was getting impatient and didn’t dare say more, turning to leave.
“Also, get the results to me by tomorrow.”
“Got it.”
“And when is Mr. Luo returning to the country?” Liu Kun suddenly remembered something.
Xiao Lin thought for a moment, looked pained, turned to glance at the notebook she held, then turned back and said, “The day after tomorrow.”
“You can’t even remember such a simple thing.” Liu Kun scolded, then waved his hand to dismiss her.
After Secretary Guo left, he pondered over how to report to Mr. Luo about Luo Xiyun dating once Mr. Luo returned.
Based on some past events, Mr. Luo had promised not to interfere with Luo Xiyun’s private life. However, considering his thunderous rage after his daughter’s hospitalization last time, it was hard to predict his reaction this time.
……
The next morning, Chen Xu sat in that cramped office, thinking of making some tea to take a break, when he received a call from Liu Kun, “The information of the company you wanted has been looked into; I’ll have my secretary send it to you shortly.”
Chen Xu said, “How can I trouble you for that, I would rather pick it up myself, don’t bother your secretary.”
“Actually, this secretary is one of my cousins, I want her to run around a bit and get some exercise. Don’t turn it down; she gathered the information, and if you have any questions about the missing details, feel free to ask her. That’s settled then, I have a meeting to attend.”
He owed him another favor.
Chen Xu hung up the phone, contemplating how he would repay these favors in the future.
After a while, an unfamiliar number called, and upon answering, it was Liu Kun’s secretary and cousin, already at the noodle shop.
Chen Xu went outside and recognized the person when he saw her; she had always followed behind Liu Kun, but they had never spoken. His feeling was that she wasn’t easy to talk to.
“Hello, my name is Liu Peilin, Mr. Liu sent me here.”
“Hello, I’m Chen Xu, thank you for your trouble, let’s talk in the office.”
Liu Peilin entered the office and, despite having a trace of scorn in her eyes, remembered Liu Kun’s instructions and restrained herself. She opened her briefcase, took out a document, placed it on the table, and said, “This is the information Mr. Liu wanted me to bring you.”
“This company was established seventeen years ago, starting with bubble tea, but began to transform thirteen years ago, focusing on brand operation, mainly on brand licensing and franchising. Seven years ago, they moved into the fast-food sector, and with the rise of social media in recent years, they’ve focused on creating internet-famous stores. Now, they have assets worth over a billion.”
Liu Peilin briefly introduced the company, “The founder of this company is a person surnamed Cai, but the company expanded greatly after his daughter took over. This woman, named Cai Hong, studied abroad in her early years. On returning to her home country, she took over the family’s bubble tea chain and quickly persuaded her parents to start transition to brand franchising, growing the company step by step. She is a very capable businesswoman.”
“The core of this company’s business model is the brand. They invest very little in the storefronts, expanding continuously through attracting individuals to franchise their own stores.”
“However, in recent years, more similar companies have emerged. As competition increases, the value of the brand decreases. They are also seeking to transform. In the past two years, their focus has been on promoting internet-famous stores, but this model does not seem very successful. Interest rises rapidly but fades just as quickly. The brand’s lifespan is too short. Currently, they are starting to face difficulties.”
“From what I’ve learned, this company still has a relatively good reputation.”

Finally, she concluded.
After listening, Chen Xu had a general understanding of the company, knowing at least it wasn’t a scam. He said gratefully, “Thank you so much.”
“No need to thank me; these are Mr. Liu’s orders.” Liu Peilin said, and then she took out a business card, “Also, Mr. Liu said if you need any legal advice, you can contact this lawyer and mention that Mr. Liu referred you for a discount.”
“Thank you.” Chen Xu took the card and kept it.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving now,” Liu Peilin said as she excused herself.
Chen Xu saw her out, then returned to his office and started to read the thick pile of documents attentively.
……
In the evening, Chen Xu invited Luo Xiyun to dinner.
They went to a private restaurant; Chen Xu had booked it the previous week and only got a position that day.
“Have you been sleeping poorly these days?” Chen Xu asked, seeing some redness in her eyes.
Luo Xiyun said, “Yes, the system just went live and there have been quite a few issues. I have to keep an eye on it constantly, haven’t slept much these past two days. It’ll be better after a while.”
Chen Xu said, “You really don’t have to push yourself like this, isn’t Liu Kun there too?”
“He also has a lot of things to take care of,” Luo Xiyun mentioned, noticing his slightly upset expression, she took his hand and softly said, “I know you’re concerned about me. Okay, I’ll be sure to take care of myself from now on.”
“If you keep this up, I’ll move in with you to supervise.”
Luo Xiyun gave him a look and said, “It seems like you’re more interested in behaving crudely than supervising.”
Chen Xu replied seriously, “I’m being serious. There’s a company that wants to cooperate with me…”
He explained the matter regarding the Jinyun Catering Group and asked for her opinion, “What do you think?”
Luo Xiyun listened intently and said, “If you really want to cooperate with them, I recommend hiring a professional to help you. There are many invisible traps in business and without experience, it is easy to suffer a huge loss.”
This was exactly what Chen Xu feared the most – he lacked experience and could easily be taken advantage of in cooperation with those big companies.
“How about I let Secretary Guo help you?”
“No, she’s indispensable to your operations,” Chen Xu didn’t agree, “Let’s talk about it in a few days, tomorrow I’m participating in a darts competition.”
After some thought, Luo Xiyun nodded and didn’t bring it up again.
