Chapter 35: A duel

Chapter 35: A duel

Riley straightened, blood still dripping from his blade, the taste of raw power thrumming in his veins.

’Status window,’ he thought.

The familiar pulse of energy surged through his consciousness. In the next breath, several translucent panels appeared in front of his eyes.

The smirk on Riley’s face widened as he reviewed his stats.

Ever since his first encounter with the first group of red orc warriors, he had been killing and devouring more of them wherever he passed.

And with each devoured corpse, his attributes had surged.

From the dozens he had consumed, his attributes had now risen to absurd numbers, some even almost reaching five hundred points.

These were stats normal players didn’t even attain at level twenty, but he already reached that level, and it was all thanks to Gluttony.

The talent wasn’t just SSS-rank—it was completely broken!

"Now," Riley muttered, brushing the ash from his cloths and gazing into the smoke-filled depths of the woods. "The only one left..."

His eyes narrowed, and a faint whisper left his lips.

"The Orc King should be up ahead."

He dashed forward in an instant, his body blurring as the Swift Boots activated in synch with his natural agility.

After running for a few minutes, he finally arrived at a small clearing, just outside the dense forest.

The first thing he saw was a large house made of dried mud and rough-cut stones.

There were a few smaller, mud-houses around it, but this particular one stood out the most due to the ominous vibe it gave.

The windows were barred with bones, the roof thatched and burnt at the edges.

A massive red handprint had been smeared across the doorway in some ritualistic pattern, and Riley could tell it was done with the blood of another monster.

’This is surely it... the orc king’s domain.’ Riley thought, pulling his daggers back out.

The door of the large mud house suddenly burst open with an earsplitting crack.

BOOM!

A massive wooden slab came flying straight toward Riley like a cannonball, splinters trailing in its wake.

His eyes snapped wide, instincts kicking in before thought could catch up. In a flash, he lunged to the side—his boots digging into the forest floor, leaves scattering as he narrowly avoided the incoming object.

THWACK!

The door smashed into the ground where he had stood a heartbeat earlier, exploding into countless wooden fragments and dust.

The force alone sent a mild gust through the clearing, rustling the nearby grass and shaking the flimsy walls of the nearby huts.

Riley rolled to his feet, daggers already drawn, body crouched low.

"What the hell..." he muttered under his breath, eyes darting to the broken shards. "Who smashes open their own damn door like that?"

A dark shadow loomed in the doorframe of the mud house.

The hulking silhouette stepped forward with slow, deliberate strides.

First a leg, wider than Riley’s entire torso. Then a broad, armored torso emerged, its massive shoulders nearly scraping against the frame of the door as it stepped into full view.

Riley’s breath caught.

The creature stood at least four meters tall—far taller than any of the orcs he had seen so far—and every inch of its body was layered with muscle so dense it looked like coiled stone beneath gray skin.

Two tusks jutted from its lower jaw, thick as wrists, protruding like white blades against its gray face.

Thick dark red tattoos slithered up from its wrists to its shoulders like vines, pulsing with a faint, eerie glow.

It wore no armor save for a crude shoulder guard of iron plates lashed together with sinew, and resting casually across its massive back was a club twice the size of Riley himself.

It was made from black iron, with crude spikes hammered into it—each one glinting faintly as if eager to taste blood.

The creature’s red eyes locked onto Riley’s.

Then it smirked.

Riley didn’t move. His fingers tensed around his daggers, beads of sweat pooling around his forehead.

Thud!

Thud!

Two more figures stepped out of the ruined doorway.

They were a head smaller compared to the orc king, with toned bodies and crude iron armor wrapped around their torsos.

Just like the larger one, each of them had blood-red lines crawling up their arms, though theirs were thinner, more concentrated along the veins.

At their waists hung dual swords—curved blades in opposite sheaths, made for brutal two-handed slashes.

[Red Orc Knight]

[Level: 19]

[H/P: 1500]

But Riley barely spared them a glance. His attention was locked onto the giant in front of him, where another, far more threatening tab unfurled in red text.

[You have encountered Greater Boss Monster: Red Orc King]

[Greater Boss: Red Orc King]

[Level: 20]

[H/P: 3000]

The creature threw back its head and let out a laugh so loud it shook the trees.

"GRAAAH-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!"

The sound reverberated like rolling thunder, rattling Riley’s eardrums and sending a jolt through his bones. A flock of crows burst out of the nearby trees, cawing in alarm as they took to the smoke-stained skies.

"Huurrman!!" the orc king bellowed, voice deep and dripping with malice.

The echo of its voice stirred the nearby huts. One by one, the doors creaked open.

From the shadows emerged dozens of smaller orcs—thinner, more fragile-looking than the warriors Riley had fought earlier.

There were women and children, along with a couple of old and fairly teenage orcs, all dressed in dirty rags and crude leathers.

Then, they all started clapping, their gazes fixed on Riley and their king.

Their eyes glowed with anticipation, mouths twitching with anticipation of blood.

A sharp ping rang in Riley’s mind.

[Kraghur, the Red Orc King, has challenged you to a duel!]

[Do you accept the duel?]

[Yes/No]
