Chapter 40: A power capable of making tremble a city

Chapter 40: A power capable of making tremble a city

The streets of New York are always in motion, even in the middle of the night.

Everyone is busy with their own affairs. Some just left their offices on Wall Street and are still talking about work.

Others are enjoying the nightlife of the city that never sleeps.

Everyone keeps walking fast.

Nobody seems to care about what’s happening around them.

Or at least, not until everyone suddenly stops and lifts their gaze to the sky.

That night, the clouds are especially thick.

A white flash cuts through the darkness for just a moment.

A slight tremor follows it, so quick that before anyone can panic about a possible earthquake, it has already ended.

A moment later, everything returns to normal.

Everyone starts walking again, as if nothing ever happened.

Some start talking about it, calling it a weird natural phenomenon.

Others blame it on a secret experiment by the United States government.

But it’s not one or the other.

The full power of Shin is released, causing an explosion of white light that pierces the three floors of the villa and the roof.

A slight tremor follows, cracking the solid reinforced concrete walls of the marquis’s residence.

Even people in a different part of the huge city can see the effects.

Velshekar floats in the air, coming out from the broken roof of the villa.

He is in his demonic form — an oni.

His skin is covered in dark purple scales, and large wings of the same color spread out.

His thin yellow eyes glow in the night.

His build is strong and muscular.

Emerald-colored flames sprout from him with every move he makes.

Even Oliver, next to his master, shows his original form — a dark emissary.

Large feathered wings in shades of grey and purple sprout from his back.

A violet halo floats above his head.

At the dawn of time, the God of Light created creatures to enforce his will.

They are called luminous emissaries.

However, it has happened in the past and still happens, even if rarely, that some luminous emissaries lose their sacred powers because of a betrayal or another serious act.

These emissaries end up embracing demonic power, turning into dark emissaries.

Their wings reflect their power.

They are naturally white, turn grey if they lose their sacred powers, and turn purple based on how much demonic power they hold.

A dark emissary with fully purple wings is almost as strong as a luminous emissary.

Oliver’s wings are about a quarter purple.

John and Oliver fly up, dozens of meters above the ground.

They try to get out of Shin’s reach.

But their attempt is in vain.

Using the parts of the roof that didn’t collapse as footholds, and using his Sacred Flame like a thruster, Shin reaches them instantly.

He ends up hovering in the air, right above them.

It’s not the first time he fights while outnumbered.

His incredible battle experience has taught him to kill the weaker enemies first in cases like this.

That way, he gets rid of unnecessary annoyances right away.

And he can see immediately that the weaker one is Oliver.

Shin lifts his flaming sword up to the sky and brings it down on the dark emissary.

Oliver notices the attack at the last second.

He has just enough time to create a sword of flames in his hand, almost identical to the Monster Reaper’s sword but purple.

He uses it to block Shin’s blow, but he can’t stop it completely.

Shin’s overwhelming strength sends him crashing to the ground like a falling comet.

The ground under Oliver cracks and breaks from the impact.

A scream of rage and pain comes from his mouth, choked by a jet of golden blood — the typical color of emissaries’ blood.

But Velshekar, just now realizing what happened, doesn’t stay still.

From his palm, he shoots a green emerald flame at Shin.

In the meantime, Shin dives down at Oliver, ready to give the finishing blow.

When Shin looks quickly over his shoulder, he sees that the green flames from Velshekar have turned into a huge flaming serpent.

Its body is about two meters wide, with gaping jaws.

It moves just a bit faster than Shin.

Oliver’s body is on the ground right below him.

He can’t move for now because of the powerful blow he took.

At that moment, Shin tries a surprise move.

Just before he reaches the ground, he dashes to the side.

His plan is to make sure those green flames, which Velshekar can probably control, fully hit the dark emissary.

Shin’s dash to the side is so fast that the marquis notices it too late.

The green flames already swallow Oliver’s body before the marquis can change their path.

...or at least, that’s what would have happened if those flames were really controlled by Velshekar.

Shin looks truly puzzled when he sees that the serpent of emerald flames turns just a moment after he does — like it’s alive on its own, with reflexes much sharper than those of its summoner.

A magic spell that’s stronger than the one who cast it?

How is that possible?

Shin is clearly puzzled.

He has seen and heard a lot in his life, but nothing like this.

Meanwhile, Oliver uses that moment to get back up and float once more beside his master.

When the green flames are just a breath away from him, Shin spins around and slices the flaming serpent in half with a single stroke.

The serpent’s body is torn apart into thousands of tiny flames.

But they don’t vanish — they stay there, floating all around him.

Velshekar’s hand is open, aimed at Shin.

Then, he suddenly closes it into a fist.

At that gesture, the thousands of tiny flames around Shin rush at him like a swarm of piranhas attacking their prey.

And then...

...a second explosion of light bursts out of Shin’s body.

It’s intense and blinding, so powerful that another earthquake shakes the whole area, once more filling the people of New York and nearby cities with fear and panic.

When the white light fades just a moment later, the green flames are gone.

«Frankly, I expected much more from you» John says, his voice full of disappointment, about fifty meters above the ground. «Based on the stories I heard about you, I thought you’d be dangerous. But it turns out you’re just a bluff. Clearly, your fame is nothing but a pile of lies to get the role of Director of HESPARC Japan. Or maybe you’ve just grown too old. Anyway, showing up here alone was a really stupid move.»

Shin smiles at him. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

«Did you say something, Velshekar? You’ve gone so far from me that I can’t hear you anymore. You know, at my age, you don’t just lose strength, but also your hearing» Shin replies with a smirk, making the typical hand-cupped gesture by his ear.

While the marquis tries to act confident and doesn’t respond to those provocations, Oliver is completely petrified.

Only his wings twitch and his back still hurts from the impact just before.

~Me, a being born from the blood of the God of Light, defeated so easily by a mere human... this is absurd...! This should never be possible...!~

Oliver clenches his fists and grits his teeth in rage.

He is hurt in both body and pride.

«I...» Oliver stammers — his voice shaking with anger. «I will kill you, you damn human!»
