Chapter 280: Experienced Vice President Chen

“Director Zhang! I’m sorry to bother you. I’m Chen Bin from Hua Corporation.” A rather familiar voice came from the other end of Zhang Fan’s cell phone. However, Zhang Fan really couldn’t remember who this person was.

“Oh, hello!” Zhang Fan’s tone was rather hesitant because he couldn’t recall.

“Haha, Doctor Zhang, I’m Yaya’s uncle. We met earlier this morning at the emergency department. Unfortunately, I was too rude to you earlier this morning. You were kind enough not to mind. I also heard that Yaya probably would have died if it weren’t for you. I truly feel bad about how I treated you. I’d like to formally apologize to you,” Vice President Chen explained on the phone.

He was being really polite. It had been many years already since he was so polite to someone so young. Still, this was how it was because he was the family member of a patient. When the patient’s life was in danger and had no other hope, it would be impossible to understand the patient’s family members’ feelings when a doctor saved the patient, unless you had experienced the same thing yourself.

“Oh! It’s fine, it’s fine. I can understand. No need to feel bad. I simply did what I should have done as a doctor. No need for you to apologize.” Zhang Fan instantly recalled upon the mention of Yaya’s name.

“Ha! I knew that Doctor Zhang was no ordinary person. I shamelessly called you regardless. Even if you got angry at me, it would make me feel better. With you saying this, I actually feel worse. Let’s see, when do you have some free time? I absolutely must formally apologize to you. Otherwise, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”

“It’s honestly alright. I don’t mind at all,” Zhang Fan explained.

The moment that Zhang Fan received a call, all of Shao Hua’s family all stopped breathing as they were all worried that it was another emergency summons from the hospital!

Not only would phone calls from the hospital be hard on the doctors, the doctors’ family members would also become really sensitive to every phone call.

“Haha, Doctor Zhang, I’ll choose the date then as the elder. It’s always best to never procrastinate. Tomorrow afternoon, after you finish your work shift, let’s meet at J Hotel, where I’ll have food and wine prepared for you. Honestly, I truly must properly thank a doctor like yourself. Rest assured, I’m also inviting the other doctors.” Vice President Chen then immediately hung up without giving Zhang Fan a chance to respond.

“What’s going on?” Shao Hua asked as she could tell that it wasn’t a phone call from the hospital.

“A patient’s family member is insisting on treating me to a meal.” Zhang Fan felt rather uncomfortable because he had been woken up right after falling asleep! His heart was beating quickly! Shao Hua handed Zhang Fan a cup of cold tea.

“Oh. Is that person’s financial situation alright? If they’re poor, then you should refuse the meal. Surgeries are fairly expensive to begin with. Don’t make things even harder for them,” Shao Hua told him.

“Yes, I know. Let’s talk about it tomorrow. He also invited the other doctors from the surgery.”

At this moment, an advertisement for Daolang’s concert showed on the television. “Daolang’s voice, Daolang’s splendor! Witness him in Chasu City!”

“Sir and Ma’am, I’ll go find a ticket scalper for you tomorrow and buy two tickets. It should be possible to acquire tickets still,” Zhang Fan said to Shao Hua’s parents. He felt that this was a rare opportunity as Shao Hua’s parents didn’t have any particular hobbies, and also because this was a small city with very few things to do.

“I don’t have any interest. Besides, I’ve heard that many people will be at the concert. I’d rather watch on TV from home. You’re so busy every day, so you shouldn’t bother yourself with such a thing. Take advantage of this time to rest. No need to worry about us.” Shao Hua’s mother felt rather awkward, so she immediately refused.

Zhang Fan didn’t say anything else. That was simply how Shao Hua’s mother was. Even if she actually really liked the idea of going to the concert, she didn’t want to make any trouble for him or Shao Hua.

“Mom, if you like it, then just go to the concert! There’s nothing to be awkward about. Zhang Fan isn’t an outsider,” Shao Hua told her mom.

“You silly child, who said that I’m feeling awkward! I’m going to cut some fruits for you.” Shao Hua’s mother actually felt even more awkward with her daughter pointing it out.

Zhang Fan smiled without saying anything. He figured that purchasing some tickets from a ticket scalper wouldn’t be that hard. He checked the time and then called the ICU department of Chasu City Hospital.

“Hello! Is this the ICU department? I’m Zhang Fan.”

“Oh, Doctor Zhang! What’s the matter? Did you miss me?” a middle-aged ethnic minority woman answered the phone. Chinese people weren’t accustomed to such intimate greetings, but the ethnic minorities, especially middle-aged nurses, really liked to adopt such a tone with younger male doctors whom they had a good relationship with.

“Hey, Sister Guli. You’re on duty again?” Zhang Fan smiled. Her friendly words made his heart feel warm inside.

“Sigh, it’s not like I’m the head nurse. Of course I have to work! Oh, wait, wait! You absolutely can’t tell what I said to others. Otherwise, the head nurse will scold me again!”

“Haha, rest assured, my lips are sealed.” Zhang Fan then immediately asked, “Sister Guli, how are the two surgery patients from today doing? Do they have much liquid in their drainage bags? Is there any blood?” Zhang Fan had to interrupt as Guli was the really talkative type who would probably go on for quite a long while!

“I just checked them both. Neither of them have much liquid. However, the older male patient has a slight fever. It’s 38 degrees Celsius. The little girl is quite normal.”

“Oh, use physical methods to cool his temperature, then. Call me if his fever reaches 39 degrees. Have you eaten dinner yet? I’ll bring some rice pilaf to you.” Zhang Fan didn’t worry upon hearing that Old Yang had a fever. It was common for patients to have a fever after such a major surgery due to the body’s sensitivity.

“I already had some beef ribs for dinner. Brother, when are you going to become a director? Once you’re the director of a department, how about I come over to be your head nurse? I’ll definitely listen to everything that you say.”

“Haha, alright, Sister Guli. I’ll definitely contact you at that time. I’ll be hanging up now.”

This was the helplessness of a nurse, especially a nurse in a department where night shift work was quite heavy like the ICU department. It was common for a nurse to no longer be able to stand up straight after an exhausting night shift. For nurses who were already past 30 years old, things really would be more exhausting if they weren’t the head nurse of the department. One night shift would exhaust them to the point of no longer having energy to speak.

The next morning, Zhang Fan finished the morning patient checkups for his patients in the rheumatology department, and then hurriedly went over to the ICU department. The surgical department in charge of the patient in the ICU department would usually be responsible for the checkup after the surgery. Zhang Fan was the type who absolutely wouldn’t rest assured unless he personally checked up on his own surgery patients.

At the ICU department, Zhang Fan checked Old Yang and Yaya’s vitals, inspected their bandages to see if any blood was seeping through, and squeezed their drainage bags to check if everything was flowing well.

Both patients’ vitals were in good condition. Blood pressure and everything else were all normal. Old Yang appeared to be in better condition as his face had remained uninjured.

However, Yaya’s appearance was rather scary. Her originally pretty face was now covered with bandages all over, leaving only her swollen eyes exposed. Her chin was so swollen that it resembled a pig’s chin. She would be in major pain from her injuries all over after she woke up!

“Doctor Zhang, I don’t think that either of these two patients will be able to leave the ICU department by tomorrow,” said Director Lin of the ICU department as he noticed Zhang Fan’s arrival.

“Alright. I also feel that they need a few extra days of observation.”

“Are you going to the dinner later tonight?” Director Lin inquired.

Zhang Fan immediately realized that Director Lin was referring to the dinner that Yaya’s uncle had invited him to, and that Director Lin must have been invited as well.

“I don’t know yet. I’ll think about it after I finish today’s work shift.”

“You should go to the meal. Just think of it as giving me face. This girl patient’s uncle is also my wife’s boss. Haha, my wife made several phone calls this morning.”

“Sure. Since Director Lin is asking, I’ll definitely go,” Zhang Fan said with a smile.

“Thanks. Still, this Vice President Chen is pretty nice. He’s the generous type.”

Later that night, right after Zhang Fan finished his work shift, he received a phone call from Vice President Chen. “Doctor Zhang, have you finished with work yet? I’m at the hospital entrance.”

“Sigh! You’re being so polite! There’s no need for such trouble.”

“It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s what I should do.”

Vice President Chen Bin was waiting for Zhang Fan in a black Mercedes Benz which was parked 500 meters away from the hospital entrance.

Vice President Chen had been unable to invite Superintendent Ouyang for the meal. Even his company’s president would have been unable to invite her successfully. Still, he had successfully invited Director Gao, Director Zhao, Vice Director Song, and the attending physicians from the cardiothoracic department and general surgery department who had worked as surgical assistants to this meal.

However, Vice President Chen had sent drivers to pick up the other doctors. He only came to personally pick up Zhang Fan. Vice President Chen was quite skilled at making his guests feel like they were being picked up luxuriously!
