Chapter 138 Grito’s Moral Dilemma

Avery peppered Iniquus with blasts from his laser pistol as the man darted around with speed that seemed impossible for his large size.

Whenever one of Avery shots was about to hit him, he brought up his now inoperable gauntlets and used them to deflect the beams.

'Those must be made out of some incredibly dense and reflective metal. I've got my pistol set to its maximum output, but I can't break through.' Avery thought, sweat pouring down his forehead as he felt the pressure on him increasing.

Eventually he lost focus for just a moment, and the pressure he was putting on Iniquus lessened slightly.

Taking this opportunity, the man grabbed one of the weapons from his fallen troops and began returning fire at Avery.

Hastily pulling Ezra's hard light shield in front of him, Avery absorbed the blasts coming his way and returned fire.

Still, his one-sided offensive had now come to an end, and he and Iniquus were locked in a deadly struggle.

While all of this was going on, Grito was crawling around on the floor, trying to keep out of the way.

He had assisted Avery in the beginning, but he saw no opportunities to get involved in the current battle, and even there were any, he was too freighted to do so.

'If I show myself, I know that I'll be shot. I just have to hope that Avery comes out on top, or his friends show up soon.'

Grtio continued to cower and watch how things would play out.

Yet the longer he stood idly by, the worse the situation became.

Avery was injured, and the longer the fight went on, the more tired he became. In a fight against someone with physical augmentations, it was commendable that he had lasted this long, but his stamina simply could not keep up.

With incredible agility, Iniquus was running around and blasting at Avery from multiple angles, while Avery found himself having to stay on the defensive and use his hard light shield to protect himself.

The only saving grace was that Iniquus was keeping his distance. He still remembered the earlier trick Avery had pulled with a laser grenade and had no intention of finding himself standing over another one.

As the fight raged on, the hard light shield protecting Avery showed signs of instability. It was certainly a powerful piece of equipment and could withstand almost any sort of attack, but it demanded an equal cost in return.

Hard light items drain an immense amount of energy, and after absorbing so many blows, the shield Ezra had loaned Avery was about to reach its limits.

Once the energy field keeping the device engaged faded, Avery found himself without any protection.

He put up a good fight after this, even managing to land a couple of shots on Iniquus, but ultimately, he was unable to stop the monstrous man's advance and had a foot slammed into his stomach.

Avery went flying backwards from the impact and slid across the ground as he coughed and wheezed for air.

"Didn't you say something about surrendering if I didn't want to feel any pain. It seems that you weren't able to back those words up." Iniquus said as he slowly lumbered towards Avery.

In a final desperate move, he tried to pull another grenade from his belt, but the moment he reached for the weapon, he felt a heavy impact on his arm.

Iniquus had rushed up to him like a blur and stomped down on him. Crushing his radius and ulna bones.

"Aghhhh!"

Avery screamed in pain as his bones were shattered and he felt his vison blacked out for a moment.

Unfortunately, an even greater wave of pain followed that brought him back to reality.

Iniquus began digging his foot in and aggravating the serve injury he had just caused.

"After I'm done with you. I'm going to have the rest of my soldiers gather up your little friends and present you to them broken. Then I'll torture all of them in front of you until their voices have gone hoarse from the screaming. Once that's finished, I'll figure out what to do with you depending on how my mood has improved." Iniquus said, a sinter grin on his face.

He then grabbed Avery's face and forced his mouth open. As he said, he was going to rip out his tongue first.

Naturally, Avery was not going to go down without putting up some level of resistance. And while it was a low blow, he managed to get one of his legs free and slammed his knee into one of the most sensitive areas on a man's body.

The was no doubt that Iniquus really felt this, and Avery nearly managed to squirm away when he felt a cold metal hand grab his leg.

An appalling crunching sound followed as Iniquus snapped Avery's leg. The one he had just used to knee the man in his privates.

Avery grunted in pain and used his other leg to kick the man in the face, breaking his nose.

Their battle had completely devolved from before. No longer were they fighting with any high-tech weapons and equipment.

Regrettably, Avery was at a clear disadvantage. Unlike Iniquus' enhanced body, he was just a normal person with a well-trained physique. Considering his two broken limbs and heavy exhaustion, it was not going to be long before he could no longer offer any resistance.

Grtio had been watching this entire fight unfold. And he knew that he needed to do something to help but was hesitating. In front of him was a laser pistol used by one of the guards working for Iniquus. Yet he could not bring himself to use it

He had never killed anyone before, and he knew that was what he would need to do in this moment.

'I can't do it.' Grito thought as he had been reaching out for the gun, his hands shaking.

Then, he met Avery's eyes as Iniquus pinned him down again. This time he had no avenue to counterattack. His strength was used up.

Seeing this and remembering all of the help he had received as well as his own fate should Avery lose, Grtio scooped up the weapon and aimed it at Iniquus.

With his eyes closed, he pulled the trigger. Unable to watch what happened next.
