Chapter 307: Chapter 307 Painful Past (14)
Five years had passed.
Ji Lanyue had grown up in the blink of an eye, transforming from a baby babbling in bed to a six-year-old child.
In the afternoon, the school bell rang.
Ji Lanyue was still packing up her stationery when Ji Tingyang and Ji Zeqiu were already waiting outside her classroom.
When Ji Lanyue saw the two outside the window, her eyes instantly burst with excited light; she grabbed her tattered little backpack and bounced out, “Big brother, second brother.”
“It’s your first day at school, how do you feel?” Ji Tingyang asked.
Ji Yiyun had never cared about their education. Even when Ji Lanyue was old enough to go to kindergarten, she was unwilling to spend the money to send Ji Lanyue there.
It wasn’t until the compulsory education phase of primary school that Ji Yiyun could no longer shirk, and she nonchalantly picked a school for her to attend.
So, all in all, today was Ji Lanyue’s first day entering the school campus.
Ji Tingyang and Ji Zeqiu worried she might not adjust well, so they waited outside her classroom as soon as school let out.
Little did they know, she did well in school, making friends with her desk mate on just the first day.
“There are so many classmates at school, I can play with everyone, I like going to school.” Ji Lanyue’s eyes curved like the moon.
During the day, big brother and second brother went to school, and no one was around to play with her, not to mention her cousin who always bullied her.
School was a lot more fun.
Seeing that Ji Lanyue was adapting well eased Ji Tingyang’s worry that had lasted all day.
Ji Lanyue walked between the two, her arms linked with theirs as they headed home.
Halfway there, Ji Lanyue suddenly remembered what the teacher had instructed and exclaimed, “The teacher said we need to buy notebooks for school tomorrow, to do homework.”
“I have a new notebook, I’ll give it to you when we get back,” Ji Zeqiu said.
Ji Lanyue’s eyes flickered, and she hesitated, “I want a pink notebook, my deskmate has one, it’s really pretty.”
“That notebook is very expensive.” Ji Zeqiu had also seen a female classmate using that kind of homework notebook in class.
He had heard a classmate mention that a pink notebook cost as much as five yuan.
That was enough money for breakfast buns for all three of them.
“Is it… really expensive? Then let’s not buy it, second brother’s notebook will do,” stammered Ji Lanyue, quickly becoming obedient.
Ji Tingyang glanced at her, pursed his lips, seemingly pondering something.
They arrived at Ji Yiyun’s house.
As soon as the three of them entered, they were greeted by a familiar barrage of scolding, “You’re back so late, were you waiting for me to cook for you?”
Ji Yiyun’s makeup grew thicker with each year, and her lips painted in fiery red hurled insults at them incessantly.
“The bus was delayed, so we came back late,” Ji Tingyang said.
“I don’t care about your excuses, quickly go cook and clean the living room as well. If there’s even a speck of dust, you won’t have dinner!” Ji Yiyun said coldly.
As soon as the words were out, the three of them dispersed and went about their tasks, as usual.
Ji Tingyang headed to the kitchen to cook, while Ji Lanyue and Ji Zeqiu went to clean the living room.
At only twelve years old, Ji Tingyang was already very adept at these household chores; he washed and chopped vegetables with great speed.
“I’ll do it.” Just as Ji Tingyang was about to start cooking, a voice came from behind him.
“Thank you, Butler Uncle, but if aunt finds out, she will scold you as well,” Ji Tingyang shook his head.
“She’s gone upstairs to rest, she won’t know,” the butler said with a light chuckle, taking the spatula from his hand.
Ji Tingyang stood by, somewhat at a loss with the kindness shown.
Aunt and her family squandered his parents’ inheritance while treating them like servants, and aside from Butler Uncle, the servants here freely bossed them around…
Ji Tingyang fiddled with the hem of his clothes and stammered out two words, “Thank you.”
The butler’s smile deepened, “Don’t mention it.”
The next morning.
As usual, Ji Tingyang took his younger brother and sister to school, passing by a small bun stall and buying each of them two large buns.
“Big brother, aren’t you eating?” Ji Lanyue took a bite of the steaming bun but noticed that Ji Tingyang’s hands were empty.
Ji Zeqiu also looked over, puzzled.
“When I got up in the morning, I took two buns from the kitchen and have already eaten,” Ji Tingyang said calmly, putting the change into his pocket.
Ji Lanyue and Ji Zeqiu didn’t think much of it and continued to eat their buns as they walked to school.
However, for the following third, fourth, and fifth days…
Ji Tingyang didn’t eat breakfast at all.
“Big brother, did you secretly take buns from the kitchen again today?” Ji Lanyue asked.
Ji Tingyang replied, “Hmm.”
Ji Zeqiu looked a bit anxious, “What if aunt finds out? She will hit you.”
Ji Tingyang reassured, “She won’t find out.”

Ji Lanyue’s eyes lit up, “Then tomorrow I will also sneak into the kitchen to eat buns, so we can save some money.”
After thinking it over, Ji Zeqiu found the idea appealing, “Me too.”
Ji Tingyang replied, “…Too many people will get us caught.”
Ji Lanyue scratched his head, “That makes sense.”
Seeing that he had managed to trick them, Ji Tingyang breathed a sigh of relief and clenched the nearly saved-up money in his pocket.
After school in the afternoon.
Ji Tingyang made an excuse, telling them he needed to stay behind for duty and asked them to go home first, while he went to a stationery store near the school gate.
He picked out the prettiest pink notebook from the shelf and brought it to the cashier to pay.
The store owner glanced casually at the notebook, “Five yuan.”
Ji Tingyang pulled out several crumpled one-yuan notes from his pocket, counting them carefully, when a mocking voice came from behind.
“Where did you get so much money? It couldn’t be stolen from me, could it?”
Ji Tingyang turned around and saw Wu Yanghui squinting at him suspiciously.
He hadn’t expected to encounter Wu Yanghui so late after leaving school.
Ji Tingyang frowned slightly but still answered, “I saved it myself.”
Wu Yanghui burst out laughing as if he’d heard a joke, “You have money to spend, and you say you saved it.”
He slung his arm around Ji Tingyang’s shoulder, pulling him away from the stationery store.
Wu Yanghui dragged Ji Tingyang into a deserted alley near the school and reached out to snatch his money, “These notes look so familiar, I’m sure you stole them from me, hand them over.”
Ji Tingyang clenched the bills tightly, enduring Wu Yanghui’s hits and insults, never loosening his grip on the money.
“What are you doing?!” A sweet, young voice echoed into the alley, “Stop it or I’ll call the teacher!”
Wu Yanghui didn’t stop and punched Ji Tingyang hard in the face.
“Teacher, teacher, come quickly, there’s a fight here!” The little girl’s voice rang out again.
