Chapter 166: Where is the Commander?

Yahe had long since given up trying to get up and stand on the ground and he simply laid listlessly on the grassy surface.

A few minutes later, footsteps echoed and he could tell from the rhythmic nature of the sounds that these were not zombies or beasts.

"Are they coming back to finish me off?" He sighed. The other party obviously knew that he was still alive and this was war, so how could they simply let him off?

So Yahe was pretty sure that it was the same group coming back to kill him and end their enmity, but weirdly enough, he couldn't care less.

He still had the flare gun with him and he didn't make any effort to reach it and signal to others, calling for help.

However, luckily for him, his guess was wrong.

"Yahe! Yahe!" Zemin and Bailong called out loudly and ran towards the man lying on the ground. These were the two leaders of the other two troops.

Though the Commander's personal troop and the A troop were completely annihilated, the military base still had two more additional forces left.

But at this moment, the two leaders did not have any confidence in their eyes. The sight of so many dead bodies of their comrades scattered around was gut-wrenching.

"What happened? Where is the Commander?"

"How did everyone die? Fuck! How did the Commander's personal troops die?"

"This is impossible! Why didn't you guys send the flare?"

"Yahe! What happened to everyone? Why are you silent?"

The two men panicked and immediately took out supplies from the bag to treat Yahe but he was calm and silent without bothering to answer any of their questions.

Only a sad bitter smile hung on his bleeding and dry lips. This made the two even more nervous and they couldn't help but imagine the worst.

"Let's first bring him back."

Both the guys tried to run around and see if there were by chance any other survivors, someone else who needed their help but the forest ground only looked like a cemetery with no one else moving a muscle.

Some of the men had suffered such grievous injuries that they were no longer even recognizable.

A couple of seconds later, seeing that their efforts were futile, the two men quickly came back to Yahe and lifted his body. It looked like he was the only survivor.

They hurried back to the water purification facility and their respective troops as well returned back to the base.

They didn't want to go to the main building and create panic and mass hysteria among the other survivors so they brought Yahe over to the armory building.

However, here as well, another unexpected sight awaited them!

The armory which was supposed to be full of weapons, ammunition, and other resources now looked like an empty storage room without even a single stray bullet lying on the ground.

The guards of the armory all stood on the side with their heads hung low, no one daring to step forward to explain just what the hell happened.

Perhaps they could have given some sort of explanation, but they themselves still had no idea what happened. The two men who were knocked out cold also had no idea.

They had long since recovered but they were unable to recollect any details.

"What is this? WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?" Bailong roared loudly. Just looking at the huge empty space almost gave him a heart attack.

This was their defense and offense. Their future battles and survival depended on this ammunition and suddenly everything went missing right under their noses?

"The Commander is missing and now this! When he comes back, just how the hell am I supposed to explain all of this to him?"

It looked like they had faced crippling losses today from all sides!

And all of this because of some random civilians?

No! Something else definitely went down tonight!

Though it was difficult to do so, Zemin and Bailong swallowed their anxiety and ignored the empty armory for now. They instead turned their attention to the man who was severely injured.

"Yahe. Please try to talk. You need to tell us what happened. Where is the Commander?"

"Please "Please, Brother. Try your best even if it hurts. We need to make at least some sort of preparations. Otherwise, if the enemy arrives at our doorstep, we will have nowhere to go."

"We have a responsibility brother. All these civilians are dependent on our protection. We need to do something. Can you talk?"

"What happened, brother? Do we need to leave this place? Where is the Commander?"

The two of them asked him the same questions one after the other, but Yahe was still silent with the same helpless smile on his face.

He, in fact, wanted to laugh loudly in their faces. What responsibility? What duty? Were they really protecting and saving everyone all these days?

Ha! What a joke!

All they were doing was simply feeding a fucking monster! They were all nothing but living and breathing dinner and dessert for a demon!

"Fuck! What happened to him! He has the same look on his face from that time." Bailong cursed loudly. "He is still bleeding. Is he not even in pain?"

"Zemin, what is happening?"

Leader Zemin stood up slowly and muttered in puzzlement. "Why don't you keep trying to talk to him? He is clearly still in shock. Let me take my men and go out."

"I will retrieve all our people dead and alive and then we will look for the Commander. He shouldn't have gone too far."

The two quickly discussed some details among themselves and sent the guards to bring the other men over. Zemin, as well, hurriedly prepared to leave as he was heading the search party.

However, just as he was about to leave the burgled armory, a small tired voice sounded. "Where are you going? Heh. The Commander is dead brother."

Both Zemin and Bailong froze, turning around to look at the source of the voice. Both of them were shocked silly.

If it was anyone else, then perhaps… but the Commander's strength… it was something they had witnessed personally! How could a great man like that die?

"YAHE! What are you saying?" Bailong quickly rushed over to him, almost shaking him in shock and frustration.

"No. No. He is obviously delirious. We… we should not listen to what he is talking about." Zemin reluctantly mumbled, even though everyone could tell that he was equally stunned.

The two of them gulped and just as they feared, Yahe smiled and spoke again. "The Commander is dead, you idiots. He was dead a long time ago."

"That man… no that woman… was not our Commander. She was a demon. She was sucking us dry. Using us as fodder."

Bailong and Zemin stared at the injured man with their mouths wide open. Each word coming out of the man was more unbelievable than the previous one.

Demon? What the hell is he talking about? Both of them were very skeptical and did not believe Yahe at all.

"As I said, he is clearly delusional. I will leave and find out what actually happened. The other group is still staying at the hospital right..."

"If I ask them in the right way, then they should obediently give me all the answers we need. I will find out what happened." Zemin stood and left the armory resolutely.

Yahe tried to lift his head up and himself once again but he only failed miserably and fell back down. "Cough. Cough. Come back. Don't go to them. They are not…"

"Our men… all of them were killed by her. Our commander. She was the enemy. Those other people had nothing to do with this."

"Don't go." He tried his best to call after the leader, but the other party ignored him and swiftly left the place.

Bailong could only sigh at the pathetic state of his friend and his comrade. "You are too agitated now. Just relax. We will take care of everything."

He didn't really blame Yahe as seeing so many of one's friends and fellow comrades lose their lives can do this to just about anyone, even to someone as steady and solid as a rock like Yahe.

"Just relax." He helped the man lie down properly and then walked over to talk to the armory guards to inquire about the burglary. He also sent another man to bring over the doctors in the base.

Yahe knew that no one was probably going to believe him. He just closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths.

He was no longer planning to try and explain anything to anyone. They would never believe him. It was just a waste of time.

When they inevitably find the man's body lying alongside everyone else's body, then perhaps they would finally understand...but his body… was already destroyed?

Yahe was too tired to think of anything and just drifted asleep. Whatever happened now was beyond him.
