Chapter 778: The Real Mission
The Browncloud Station was only large enough to cover about 70,000 square meters of land, covered by a dome or whatever was left of it.
Dark black fumes were escaping into the skies from this station as chaos brewed along with the cries of horror and despair.
Debris was still falling down from the half-destroyed dome while the large front gates were already smashed open.
But the frightening sight for any human would be the fifty giant black hounds standing in the air, spread across the entire station. It was as if they were staying in the air to make sure nobody could escape by flying away. Their expressions were ferocious, to say the least, as spittle constantly dripped down their huge maws. Their dark red eyes looked as bloodthirsty as they could get. There was no question that they could sniff any living being from miles away and shred them to pieces.
There were no riders, but this sight could make even a child guess that there were at least 50 ghouls who had already invaded the station.
It wouldn't take much to guess that this small station might not be able to handle the invasion of so many ghouls.
Just a few hundred meters away, the sandy earth shook before getting displaced as a large metal object pierced its way out.
The Burrower had finally reached its destination as everybody inside it became extremely vigilant towards their surroundings.
Lily sighed in relief upon seeing that this ship's senses were quite accurate, as it had already shown them that there were no ghouls nearby.
She still couldn't believe that a ship could travel this fast underground. It was quite a surreal experience for her, Reva, and Valentina.
Yuria felt as if she was riding in a small bullet train, except it was underground.
But Lily looked into the distance, towards the station, which made her gasp and placed her hand on her chest, "Oh no. We are too late. They are already inside."
Gunner shook his head and said, "Not yet. Leader told me to tell you all our real mission after reaching here."
"Real mission?" Reva asked as she furrowed her brows.
"We are actually not here to save the station but someone inside it. Their Station Master. He is an old man who must be holed up in his bunker, but that bunker wouldn't last the entire day. By tomorrow the ghouls would definitely get him. So our mission is to get rid of the ghouls and escort him to our station," Gunner explained as he and the others removed his seatlockers.
Lily's eyebrows pulled in as she asked, "Then what about the people? Are we simply going to let them die?" She thought they were here to save the people from the ghouls and not just a single person. Why would Kena give them such a mission?
Lita clicked her tongue in annoyance as she said, "Stop being a saint, will you? Are you too blind to see that the ghouls are already inside? If you didn't know, once a station is invaded, everybody inside is considered dead except for those inside the bunker, of course. But they will be dead too if we can't get rid of the ghouls."
"I know, right. She must have lived such a pampered life to think she could save everyone. How naive," Becca shook her head with a jeering look. Even though everyone was wearing helmets that completely obscured their faces, those wearing these helmets could still see each other's faces because of the special glass covering the helmet.
"Becca, mind your words. It's not wrong to try and save others. Otherwise, we humans would never have survived," Linda said with a stern look, making Becca snort.
Linda's gaze softened as she placed her hand on Lily's and said, "I know you are worried about the people, but this mission is quite important. This is actually coming from our headquarters and not something our leader assigned. She is merely directing it. If a mission is from HQ, then it could only mean that we definitely can't fail this, and by succeeding, it would mean a great deal for Salvation, the entire humanity. Do you understand?"
Lily nodded stiffly and felt sad for those people inside.
"But if we see anyone still alive, we will save them," Valentina firmly said before glancing at Lily. She wasn't actually keen to save anyone, but she could feel how bad Lily was feeling and wanted to do a favor for her.
Yuria and Reva also nodded at Lily, supporting her intentions.
Gunner's expression became difficult as the scary and strongest squad member among them was speaking in such a determined tone. Still, he had to do his job and say, "Fine. But remember…Our mission is the priority. Let's get out and proceed as planned. We will split as per our original teams."
Everybody nodded as they carefully got out.
Yuria held her breath as she was worried that those giant hounds might sense them. But as Jake explained earlier, their suit also included a function that prevented their aura from leaking out unless they used or expelled their ethereal energy. But what was even more spectacular was that these suits could make them invisible to the naked eye. Of course, the invisibility would break if they tried to use their ethereal energy.
She was astonished as this suit would greatly help in any situation which involved one being stealthy. This was like greatly advanced tech for her, and she never expected the humans of the Old World to be experts in making them. She could only fathom how much more advanced when the famous Golden Light Sovereignty was in power.
"We definitely won't be going through the main gate. So my team and I will try to enter through the east, Jake and his team through the west, and you four through the south. Look at the status screen on your wrists to know each other's location and other details. Got it?" Gunner asked as everybody nodded while Reva pressed on her wrist as a holographic screen was displayed, showing multiple green dots, each showing the location of not only her sisters but also Gunner's and Jake's team.
"Great. Let's move!" Saying so, the group of twelve split into three groups of four and ran in different directions as they all went invisible with a tap on their wrist.
