Chapter 13: Mana potions

[Ding! You have extracted the ability 'Minor Agility Boost'.]

[Ding! [Minor Agility Boost] has been upgraded.]

[Ding! You have killed Forest Wolf Lv. 3]

[Ding! You have gained experience points.]

"So if I absorb the same ability, it levels up a little," Damon noted. Letting the beast corpse fall to the ground, he quickly started draining the blood of the second wolf. Soon, another set of notifications followed.

Damon was surprised at this set of notifications.

Even though he had repeated everything, the bloodline extraction was only a partial success. But it still gave him an additional stat point. It wasn't much, but then again, it was a permanent addition to the stats, so it was quite good overall.

At least for now, the skill was slowly compensating for the loss of stats from not having a class. To really understand the effects of the Bloodline Extraction skill, he will need to keep going and farm more and more beasts.

Damon opened up the map and checked out the area where he was. He was currently in the forests on the outskirts of the Nieta Falls. There were a lot of easy, low-tier beasts in this region. This was perfect for his grind.

He prepared to head over to a known grinding spot when suddenly his head started spinning.

Damon immediately sat back down and looked at his status screen. Indeed, his mana was completely gone.

"Shit." Damon groaned, wiping sweat from his brow. "So that's the catch..."

Using Bloodline Extraction wasn't free. It didn't show an immediate mana cost like a spell, but clearly, draining and assimilating powers through a primordial bloodline wasn't light work. His body felt fine, no injuries, no wounds, but his mind felt like it had been through a blender. Vision blurry, thoughts slow. Even the passive hum of hunger dulled under the weight of exhaustion.

He leaned against a tree trunk, panting. "No wonder it's an SSS-rank skill... It can carry me to godhood, but it'll also suck me dry like a pissed-off leech."

He needed rest. Mana regeneration was slow without potions or class bonuses. And since he had no class... well, that was going to be his next problem to solve. He needed more mana potions.

Damon sighed and lay flat in the grass, keeping one eye open. He had to wait for half an hour, and then he would be fine. But where would he go for mana potions?

He thought about that old hag again and quickly shook his head. She would probably not give him any more handouts anytime soon. In fact, it might have a negative effect and impact his reputation.

Besides, basic mana potions should take another day or so to show up in the market. There might be some available now, but they were all sure to cost an arm and a leg. He definitely did not have any coins to buy shit. It looked like he had to take care of some logistics to back up his powerful skill.

Half an hour went by quickly, and Damon decided to head over to the snake pond. He would have liked to continue grinding wolves to find out more about his skill, but he also needed mana potions. To solve both his problems, the snake pond was the right answer.

The basic mana potions actually weren't all that difficult to make. In his last life, after two years, there was a genius alchemist who had found a shortcut recipe for some of the more useful potions. This man had completely crashed the market, and he made a killing out of it.

Normally, basic mana potions would cost 20 silver, and basic health potions would cost 25 silver, but this dude was selling them for 5 silver a pop. Moreover, he continued to sell them, his stock supply seemingly never-ending.

All the big guilds were taking a huge loss, and they were completely livid. Finally, someone managed to find out the secret of the guy. Instead of the usual complicated recipe of the basic health potion and mana potion, he was using a shortcut recipe and using only one herb.

Damon remembered it clearly. The forums had gone absolutely insane when the secret broke.

The alchemist had figured out that Lesser Mistleaf, a common herb that spawned near ponds and marshy lowlands, could substitute for three rare ingredients in the original potion recipe if processed right away.

The catch was that a little bit of mist had to remain on the leaf when harvesting it and processing it.

Pissed off by the big guilds constantly harassing him and supressing him, in the end the genius alchemist simply gave away the formula to the public, thereby completely crushing the market. The two potions were sold for dirt cheap after that, and no one could make a profit anymore.

But this time around, Damon was the only one who knew this secret formula. The entire market was his to dominate. He quickly hurried to the snake pond, taking the shortest path he knew. On the way, he ran into a couple of wild boars.

Damon checked his mana. It was 30/50. He tossed the 5 extra stats into his intelligence for now. It immediately bumped up his mana to 50/70. "This should be enough for a single bloodline extraction." He clicked his tongue and went for the two boars.
