Chapter 98: Phase Two (1)

Chapter 98: Phase Two (1)

...

...

Useless can’t help but wanting to cry, if it was able to, like a pride teacher—or doting parent—watching their student finally cast their first true spell.

And more than that—he was using a grimoire.

In this world, there were many methods to learn magic. Some required years of study, others required rigorous practice and spiritual attunement. But grimoires made the process simpler and more efficient. As long as the wielder read the incantation stored within and successfully activated it once, the spell would be registered to their Signet Status—making it usable with ease afterward.

Even for Awakeners, learning new magic typically required dozens of repetitions to engrave the spell into their being. But with a grimoire, it only took one successful reading.

"Burn your enemies, illuminate the sky, and cleanse the world with your shining light..."

As Eren continued the chant, the magic circle beneath the Reaper grew brighter. The monster’s instincts screamed at it—warning it of danger. It struggled harder, its eye flashing with panic.

–CRACK!

The purple chains began to splinter.

Unlike before, these weren’t high-tier golden chains like what Eren used—they were summoned using a High-grade purple scroll. The Reaper could feel the bindings weakening. It just needed a little more strength...

But it was too late.

"Let all be reduced beneath the gaze of the mighty star..."

Eren’s voice rang with finality. He looked up at the Reaper, his red eyes calm and cold. With one hand raised, he spoke the final trigger.

"Sun Ray."

–VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!–

A massive pillar of blinding white light burst from the magic circle, engulfing the Abyssal Reaper in holy brilliance. The Reaper screamed, its body writhing in agony as it was consumed by light.

"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

The spell—Sun Ray—was a high-level light magic spell that summoned a beam of burning radiance light that can rival the light ray of a sun. It could incinerate darkness, sear through shadows, and purify evil with the brilliance of the heavens. It was a spell commonly used by the holy churches of Sanin and Aidlyan—especially effective against undead and dark-type creatures.

The Abyssal Reaper—an undead monster born of darkness—was the perfect target.

It thrashed violently, but the light did not stop.

The Boss’s body was burning, scorched and burned by the divine intensity of the beam. The agony in its scream echoed through the chamber room.

Meanwhile, the grimoire in Eren’s hand turned to glowing particles, dissolving into light as the spell was completed.

A system notification then appeared before him.

[New Notification]

[You have learned a new Magic Spell]

[Spell: "Sun Ray" has been added to your Signet Status]

[Details–!]

---

Seeing that he had unlocked a new magic spell, Eren didn’t even bother checking its details.

"What a long-ass spell,"

He muttered with a sigh of annoyance. He lazily pulled out his sunglasses from his ring and slid them on before turning his gaze back to the massive pillar of light still blazing in front of him, watching the boss monster get barbecued like a cursed rotisserie chicken. fгeewebnovёl.com

It all started earlier before entering the Boss room, when Eren was browsing the system shop, buying a ridiculous amount of items—just in case. During that little shopping spree, he went searching for a powerful light-element attack spell. Preferably something strong. Preferably something with wide area attack.

Unfortunately, most of the light-based magic scrolls in the shop were nothing but basic offensive spells, and honestly, they didn’t really impress him. After scrolling through page after page of "meh," he ended up buying a grimoire instead—one that contained the highest-level light attack magic available in the shop.

The catch?

None of them were chantless. Unlike his True Illusion Magic, almost every light spell he found required some kind of incantation—long, dramatic, theatrical chanting like some ancient opera singer doing a solo.

...

And now, here he was.

"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

The monster screamed in pure agony as its body was roasted alive by the overwhelming beam of holy light. The blinding attack continued for a full twenty seconds—longer than most microwave sessions, even—and finally came to a halt.

With a light sigh, Eren took off his sunglasses and looked toward the charred remains of what used to be the Abyssal Reaper. The creature lay sprawled on the blackened floor, smoke curling from its body, fully roasted to extra-crispy. The thick black mist that had cloaked its body was gone, revealing a grotesque mess underneath—rotted and burnt flesh that stank so badly that made Eren instinctively covered his nose.

"Ugh, it smells like a zombie fart mixed with burnt garbage," he muttered with a gag.

Some of its bones were poking out of its back, one of its wings now just a skeletal bat-like limb barely clinging to scraps of rotten tissue. It looked more like a horror prop from a haunted house than a fearsome boss monster.

"...Is it dead?" Eren asked aloud, against his better judgment—despite fully aware that kind of question always triggers a flag.

And sure enough—

—Twist—

The Reaper’s body suddenly jerked. One of its hands twitched, scraping against the floor as it began to push itself up slowly.

"What the...?"

The full front of the monster was now visible. Eren finally got a proper look at its grotesque design—like something born from the twisted mind of a horror game developer on a bad day. Its decaying flesh rippled unnaturally, as if something beneath its skin was still alive and mutating.

Its face? Oh no. That wasn’t a face. It had one large red eyeball sitting dead center on its forehead—no nose, no mouth—just an empty, cursed stare.

And then he saw it.

A gaping maw, a huge monster-like mouth located right on its chest.

"...Damn. You’re uglier than a child of a troll who married a goblin and then mated with an ogre," Eren commented dryly.

–Shlrrrrrk–

A sickening noise of shifting flesh echoed in the boss room. The Reaper’s back began twisting and convulsing in unnatural ways. Eren’s eyes narrowed, a sense of dread creeping in the air. He had seen something like this before—in a zombie horror game he once played that called Resident Villain.

–SPLASH!

A long bony limb burst out from the Reaper’s back, right where its right wing had been torn off earlier.

–SPLASH! –SPLASH!

Two more bone-like protrusions shot out next, looking like twisted tree braches.

Then, to make it worse, putrid flesh began to grow and wrap around the bones, forming new wings—if you could even call them that.

And so, in mere moments, the Reaper had sprouted three additional wings—each one a disgusting fusion of rotten meat and bone—adding to the single tattered wing it still had.

Now it had four wings. Four horrifying, mutated, necrotic wings.

"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH!!"

The Reaper shrieked and spread its wings wide, releasing a shockwave of wind that howled through the boss room. Eren was forced to brace himself, planting his feet firmly as he raised his arms to block the gust. His coat flapped wildly behind him.

"Of course," he muttered, sarcasm dripping from his voice. "There just had to be a phase two..."

The Reaper raised its weapon above its head once more—what used to be a massive scythe wrapped in dark energy. But this time, the swirling darkness dissipated, revealing its true form underneath.

The weapon was made entirely of bones, and the blade itself was just a sharp, curved extension of rotten flesh clinging to splintered bone.

As Eren watched, the disgusting scythe began to twist and change shape. The flesh writhed around the handle, mutating with every second. The scythe morphed, elongating and warping until it transformed into a long, two-handed greatsword—still made of the same grotesque materials.

Dark energy reappeared and cloaked the blade once more, like it was trying to hide how ugly the thing really was, like it’s wielder.

"Hoo~ Changing style I see?" Eren grinned, a nervous chill running down his spine. "Classic boss behavior."

His heart pounded faster, not from fear—but from the thrill of the unknown. A rush of adrenaline washed over him, as he couldn’t help but feel excited.

The Abyssal Reaper turned its one red eye toward the lone human in the room. Then, with a monstrous roar, it raised the massive sword and swung it downward, releasing a burst of dark pressure that cracked the floor beneath its feet.

This time, the sound wasn’t the same eerie screech from before.

This was a roar.

A proper, deep, soul-shaking monster roar—signaling the true beginning of the final battle.

"GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!"

...

...

...

—BOOOM!

The final battle erupted with a thunderous blast. The Abyssal Reaper flapped its grotesque wings and lunged toward Eren at blinding speed, closing the distance in an instant. It swung its long, demonic sword downward in a savage arc.

—Slash!

—Boom!

The attack struck the dungeon wall behind Eren, exploding on impact and sending debris flying—but Eren had already vanished, dodging the blow just in time. In the same breath, he appeared behind the boss, ready to counter with a swift slash of his own.

—CLING!

But the Reaper blocked with one of its massive wings, its bones creaking as it deflected the attack. It immediately retaliated with a backhand slash, slicing Eren clean in half—only for the figure to flicker and vanish. An illusion clone.

The real Eren reappeared behind the monster once again, attempting to land another strike on its back. But once more, the Reaper’s wing twisted unnaturally, blocking the attack before countering again.

This back-and-forth repeated several times as Eren clashed with the monster. It was adapting. Its movements were getting smarter, more precise—it was starting to understand Eren’s illusion tricks.

But Eren had also noticed something important.

Its speed... it’s slowing down, just a little. Unlike before, it seems that the Boss’s speed has been reduced because of the change of the weapon design or because of the extra wings.

’Useless, analyze it!’ Eren commanded mentally.

[I’m on it!] the system replied instantly.

Without wasting time, Eren drew multiple enhancement scrolls from his storage ring and slashed them open with his dual blades, activating powerful light magic and resistance buffs that surged in both swords.

His Aura flared as he enhanced his speed even further, disappearing into a blur as he rushed the Reaper head-on. He unleashed a flurry of rapid, precise slashes, blending illusion clones into the assault to confuse the monster.

—Cling! —Cling! —Slash! —Cling! —Slash!

His attacks landed—deep cuts sliced through the Reaper’s mutated flesh—but the creature didn’t even flinch. It retaliated relentlessly, blocking many of his strikes and countering with terrifying speed.

"Now we’re talking!"

Eren shouted with a grin, blood pumping with excitement as he clashed against the boss in a high-speed duel.
