Chapter 34: Chapter 034 Street Gunfight

Chen Ke only glanced once and recognized it as a modified Ford Econoline 100 van, a classic vehicle produced in 1973. Back in the United Federation, this van was often the preferred choice for small shop logistics and delivery vehicles.

No matter what forces were on the other side, their choice of this vehicle was certainly simple; it was its low-profile and traditional design. The two Econoline 100s in front of him were painted black, with the windows replaced with privacy glass, driving at a steady speed towards the Upper City.

And alongside this van, there were two black sedans escorting it.

With access to a mobile phone, Chen Ke had once seen a map of Opportunity City on Google Maps; it was located at the northern edge of the United Federation, facing the covenant nations across an inland sea.

Opportunity City was composed of three large blocks and five districts in total. The first block, Upper City, had three parts: the Financial Center Raffi Road, the wealthy Beach Harbour Town Deep Anchor, and the affluent residential area Holy Oak. The second block was the Lower District, formerly known as Iron Rolling. The last was a national park district that occupied one-third of the city’s area—Opportunity City’s Holy Angel National Park.

Adjacent to the Lower District’s Iron Rolling were only two places: Holy Angel Park and Raffi Road. Undoubtedly, the van was heading towards Raffi Road. Through the city’s freeway, it would take just over an hour to return to its lair.

...

And Raffi Road was almost entirely occupied by the Spiritual Ability Enterprise; to make a move there was truly unwise.

“Four vehicles, a conservative estimate of sixteen bodyguards, with the van’s guards counted separately,” said Chen Ke.

“First, blow up the escort cars,” Hall said, donning his mask and picking up the grenade launcher from his waist before crawling to the back door of their own van.

His mask was a clown’s face in tears, smeared with black and blue paint, looking quite eerie.

Their van approached the convoy at a relaxed pace, but the other side seemed to grow suspicious, as their speed slightly increased. The last sedan in their line broke away from the group, positioning itself between the black vans and lowering its window to wave at Chen Ke and his team, signalling them not to come any closer.

Priskin had already put on his mask—a ferocious grizzly bear, painted dark brown, fitting Chen Ke’s impression of him perfectly.

Priskin slid into the passenger seat and pulled out his SOCOM MK23, firing a wild barrage at the black sedan’s driver’s seat.

The distinct sound of gunfire erupted in the middle of the street as passersby let out shouts, some dropping to the ground and others scattering in all directions.

The black sedan’s driver was hit in the head and shoulder, slumping over onto the passenger beside him. Soon, the vehicle lost control, taking a sharp turn to the left, drawing a semicircle across the road before crashing into a fire hydrant, sending water shooting skyward.

The opposing convoy immediately reacted; the two leading cars decelerated quickly, flanking Chen Ke’s van from the left and the right, and another car pushed from the front, trying to force them to a stop.

Several bald men with sunglasses leaned out of the black sedans’ windows and pulled out MP5Ks to open fire. The driver stomped on the brakes, pulling the van out of their flank, turning a corner and heading down another street.

“Let them chase us, then take them out on the road,” Hall shouted.

Chen Ke grabbed the handle above his head to steady himself. Although he had disengaged the safety on his M16A2, the space in the van was too cramped to make use of his weapon; it was too long.

The three black cars followed closely behind, matching their speed. Hall kicked open the backside doors of their own van and lobbed a grenade at the lead car.

“Boom!”

The grenade hit the front grille of the black sedan, flashing brightly before exploding with a thunderous sound. With the combined effects of high-speed inertia and the blast of the grenade, the black sedan flipped in the air, its front hood erupting in flames and landing upside down in the middle of the street.

The car following behind didn’t have time to swerve away and crashed directly into it, the driver getting pushed forcefully by the inertia, smashing through the windshield and flying out, landing on the ground bloody-faced.

“Ha! That’s what you get for not wearing a seat belt!” Hall laughed.

One last vehicle remained in pursuit, but as Hall backed up to load another grenade, he saw a police car had joined the chase.

“All units, be advised, a car chase and shootout at the intersection of Lanxianghua Street No. 9. A blue van and four black sedans are exchanging fire along the street, nearby units respond immediately. CODE3.”

“10-4”

Priskin intercepted the County Police radio, and it seemed the cops were also joining the fight.

“Fuck, just as we’re getting started, the pigs show up!” cursed Priskin.

“Hurry, take care of that van.” Hall turned and closed the rear double doors; their black sedan was already entangled with the police cars and had no energy left to deal with Chen Ke and the others.

The driver, visibly nervous, still accelerated towards the black van, now unprotected and an easy target.

As they neared the black van, Priskin took his SOCOM MK23 and fired six shots at the driver’s cabin glass, leaving only white marks on the bulletproof glass.

“It’s bulletproof glass, knew it wouldn’t be that easy!” Priskin cursed. He then fired a few shots at the van’s tires. The left front tire exploded loudly, spinning a few times before the rubber flew off, leaving only the wheel rim behind.

The van continued forward for a while before finally crashing into the flowerbed at the roadside, its front end caved in significantly, coolant spilling all over the ground.

The three men jumped out of the car. The van’s driver pushed the deformed door open and stumbled out of the cabin onto the ground, face covered in blood. Priskin shot him in the back of the head, his brains painting the pavement red and white.

At that moment, three police cars arrived from both ends of the street to block off the road, issuing a warning to Chen Ke and his group through the car speakers.

“You are surrounded! Drop your weapons…”

Before the County Police could finish, seven or eight grey SUVs suddenly charged out from another intersection about 100 meters away, with several men in black wearing sunglasses and wielding MP5Ks, spraying bullets towards Chen Ke’s group.

Several County Police officers drew their Glocks and fired back at the men in black. The tough guys used their vehicles for cover, returning fire at the County Police while trying to get closer to the black van.

Hall lobbed a grenade towards their SUVs, which struck the gas tank area, instantly turning the vehicle into a giant fireball, two men in black sent flying by the blast.

A bullet grazed Hall’s ear, blood gushing out immediately.

“Quick, open the door and get the people on, we’re leaving!” Hall yelled.

Priskin went around to the back of the black van. After several unsuccessful attempts, he pulled out a portable drill, securing it near the door lock.

“This door’s been reinforced. I need to drill a hole at the lock to get the door open. Give me 50 seconds!” Priskin called out.

After a long silence, Chen Ke jumped out from the side door of the van. Wearing a red mask, he raised his M16A2 and fired bursts towards the direction of the County Police, about 100 meters away. The bullets accurately hit the tires and the lights of the police cars, causing the officers to quickly duck behind their vehicles.

Hall took cover on one side of the black van, pulling out a shotgun to fire at the men in black trying to approach.

The tough guy squad by the SUVs drew most of the fire as they were the first to shoot at the County Police, bearing the brunt of the hostility. The trio of Chen Ke took cover behind the black van, mostly exchanging fire with the squad of tough guys.

Chen Ke took cover behind the tires of the black van, occasionally poking out half his body to fire a few shots. The County Police didn’t convey a killing intent, as they only wanted to arrest the trio, and the men in black didn’t seem too aggressive either. After all, the fully armed Chen Ke was overwhelmingly strong for most people, and only a very few assassins could exert pressure on him.

“Priskin, how long for that drill?” Chen Ke asked, looking back.

“I don’t know, depends on how much they spent reinforcing that door,” Priskin replied helplessly.

During their exchange, several bullets flew over, hitting the drill which emitted a “duang duang duang” sound from a broken shaft. Chen Ke popped his head out, switched to three-round burst mode, and pulled the trigger towards a tough guy in sunglasses 200 meters away.

All three shots hit, two tearing through the man’s pectoral muscles, another piercing his throat.

“I need to change the drill bit, wait here,” said Priskin, quickly running to the door to remove the drill.

“Fuck, this is deadly. Feels like tower defense!” Chen Ke complained.

“You’ll get used to it! Hahaha!” Hall laughed as he stuffed deer bullets into his shotgun, blood dripping from his ear onto his shirt collar and brown suit, looking scary but it was only a graze.

“The gunfire is too fierce, I’m pulling out!” said the driver of the blue van and, with that, hit the gas and sped away.
