Chapter 33: Seduction gone wrong

Chapter 33: Seduction gone wrong

When the sun set behind the horizon and welcomed the night, the sky filled with shimmering stars and a huge moon with a red halo around it. It bathed everything in a soft, creamy glow, including Ave’s room where she stood by the mirror staring at her work of art.

It had taken her an eternity to finally find a suitable dress—one revealing enough for her mission tonight. She was surprised Selene even owned such a dress, considering this era seemed to frown upon anything remotely daring.

"If I had a dress like this in my time, I’d have worn it to a movie premiere!" Ave thought, twirling in front of the mirror. The shimmering black dress flowed around her in soft waves. It was made entirely of lace, with beads sewn into intricate patterns that caught the light from the candles, making them sparkle like stars.

The dress had a circle A-line shape, with a short lining underneath the lace that stopped mid-thigh, while the rest of the skirt was sheer revealing her legs beneath the delicate fabric. The midsection was left bare with only the see-through lace covering her belly, while the chest area was adorned with more lace, and a small lining covered her breasts. But the deep V neckline plunged low, revealing the swell of her breasts, pushing them up in a way that was both tantalizing and elegant.

Ave admired everything about the dress, and she was sure it would serve its purpose tonight. After all, she was an actress, and seducing the second prince wouldn’t be that different from playing a role. Acting like a lust-driven wife to get him head over heels for her? Piece of cake. It was just another scene.

Ave took a deep breath, reassuring herself. But despite her boldness, her heart pounded, and her legs trembled slightly as she made her way out of the chamber, draping a robe around herself. She would discard it once she reached his room.

She couldn’t believe she was actually about to seduce a man. Was this truly going to make him fall for her? Lust didn’t always lead to love. And if she succeeded, would she have to sleep with him? That would be crossing a line she wasn’t sure she was ready for. She just needed to make him want her—enough to forgive Selene and love her. She had seen it happen in countless movies. Love at first sight was cliché but effective.

With her killer dress, she was certain he would not only fall head over heels for her but toes over head as well!

Ave smirked at the thought. "Shadow lady, wherever you are if you can see me now, you better prepare my tickets back home. Lucian is as good as gone."

She entered the darkened south wing of the palace where it was so eerily quiet that she could hear her own breathing and the rapid thumping of her heart. Her footsteps echoed against the marble floors, and the only light visible was the moonlight that streamed through the high windows, casting creamy shadows along the corridor. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

Ave’s heart raced faster with every step she took toward his chamber. How could anyone live in such darkness? At least a few lamps along the walls would have made it less sinister, but there were none. It felt like she was walking straight into a horror movie.

"Tsk, tsk, Selene. You really were an unfortunate little bitch," Ave thought, "and now I have to fix all the mess you made."

She stopped in front of the prince’s chamber doors. If Selene hadn’t cheated on her husband, and if Victoria hadn’t pushed Ave off the stage, she wouldn’t have ended up in this predicament. The thought of both women being the cause of her misfortune fueled her determination to get this over with, return to her own time and deal with Victoria.

Ave raised her fist to knock, but before her knuckles could connect with the door, it creaked open on its own. She peeked inside the chamber, finding it cloaked in darkness, the curtains drawn tight over the windows, blocking out the moonlight.

Swallowing hard, she gripped the side of her dress and stepped inside. Blinded by the blackness, she fumbled her way toward what she assumed was a window and grabbed the heavy curtains, intending to pull them open to let in some light. But she froze when her ears picked up a low, ominous growl coming from somewhere in the room.

Ave stiffened, her heart plummeting into her stomach. Every nerve in her body screamed for her to run, but before she could move, the growl grew louder—now coming from directly behind her.

She felt whatever it was looming over her, towering menacingly.

Ave felt every hair on her skin stand on end. "W-whatever you are," she stammered, her voice shaking, "you can’t harm me in my husband’s chamber. If you do anything to me, Prince Lucian will skin you alive. I’m warning you... step back."

The growling ceased, but the presence remained. She could feel it, cold and threatening. Gathering every ounce of courage in her, she slowly turned on her heels to face it. But the moment she did, her breath caught in her throat.

Two glowing amber eyes glared down at her from the darkness, burning with such intensity that she instinctively took three steps back.

Though she couldn’t see the rest of him, she didn’t need to. She recognized those eyes. They belonged to Lucian.

She had come here with the intention of seducing him, but in her foolishness, she had forgotten he wasn’t just any man—he was the cursed prince, the so-called prince of darkness who could kill with his bare hands.

"I... I’m sorry to bother you, Your Highness. I’ll take my leave now," Ave said awkwardly, trying to side-step him and make a run for it. But before she could even reach the door, he moved in front of her, blocking her path. The door, which had been ajar slammed shut on its own, and she heard the lock click into place.

"What do you want from me this time?" his deep, menacing voice asked from the shadows, his amber eyes the only visible part of him.

Ave’s throat went dry. "I came here by mistake—I mean, I was sleepwalking and ended up in your chamber. I don’t want anything. Now please step aside so I can leave you to... your, um... meditational growling."

"You must have come to give me that poison the Empress ordered you to feed me, Selene," he said, his voice thick with bitterness and pain. "I’m already a dying man. I don’t need your poison to speed it up. If it makes you happy to know, I don’t have much time left—all thanks to you."

Though she couldn’t see his face, the anguish in his voice made Ave’s heart ache. Poison? The poison Selene had been feeding him since they married! She recalled the Empress’s orders and Selene’s conversation at the inn about the poison. All this while she’d thought the poison hadn’t been effective or that Selene hadn’t fed it to him.

"However," Lucian’s voice cut through her thoughts as he stepped closer, his slow, deliberate movements pushing her back until her spine pressed against the window, "if I am to die from your poison, I will make sure to take you to hell with me, Selene."

Before she could react, his hand shot out grabbing her by the neck—again! What was it with him and strangling her all the time?! Ave rolled her eyes, prepared to struggle as usual, but before she could resist, his grip loosened. Lucian fell to his knees, coughing and growling in pain.

Ave didn’t hesitate. She spun toward the door to make her escape, but stopped when she heard him collapse to the ground, his coughs growing more desperate.

If Lucian were to die now, she’d be at the Empress’s mercy, with no hope of returning to her time. The Empress would kill her the moment Lucian’s life ended as her usefulness would be over as well. For Ave, this cursed prince had to survive for her to return home. He had to love his wife again and become the Emperor.

There was no time to think through anything that would discourage her from helping him. Her heart pounding in her chest, she hurried toward him, cursing under her breath as she stumbled over the hem of her robe in the near-total darkness. She angrily took off the robe and flung it aside. Without his amber eyes glowing in the blackness, it was almost impossible to see him.

"Where the hell—" Ave muttered, her hands reaching out blindly. Her fingers found the heavy curtains, and with a swift yank, she pulled them apart.

Moonlight flooded into the chamber, bathing the room in an ethereal glow. She blinked rapidly to adjust to the light and then gasped as she spotted Lucian sprawled on the ground. His body writhed in pain, his muscles spasming uncontrollably. His breath came out in ragged gasps as if he was fighting a battle within himself.

Ave quickly knelt beside him, lifting his head onto her lap. She cradled him with one arm while brushing his sweat-soaked hair back from his forehead with the other.

"I’ve got you," she whispered softly. "I won’t allow you to die as long as I’m here, Lucian."

His body jerked again, and Ave flinched but refused to let go. She held on tighter, her resolve solidifying with each second as she knew her freedom lies in him.

The light from the full moon bathed his body, and in the pale glow, Ave saw something astonishing. Black hair began to sprout from his arms, but just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished again, as though it had never been there.

She blinked, her mind reeling. Was this part of his curse? She thought, but now wasn’t the time to dwell on whatever she thought she had seen or what he was. She had to help him get to the bed.
