Chapter 1349: Corpse Collector (1)

Chapter 1349: Corpse Collector (1)

Inside the mayor's residence.

Su Yu stared at the little furball blankly.

The little furball was also staring at Su Yu, but he was trembling. Yummy must be sick. Why was Yummy behaving so weirdly?

He really wanted to go back to sleep, lick some characters, or do something else. But looking at the blankly staring Su Yu, he was worried that this was one of those times when Su Yu was going mad again. Thus, he could only remain still and keep staring into Su Yu's eyes.

"Past...fusion..."

Su Yu muttered to himself. Fusion with the myriad races. Experience their past. This was not a simple alteration of appearance or form. That was something he could already do.

But his new comprehension pointed to an entirely different concept.

This was no mere disguise. Rather, this was fusion in body and mind. For a short moment, he seemed to have fully turned into the little furball.

"Civilization."

Su Yu muttered to himself again. Was this the purpose of the civilization character, a result of the culture and radiance characters?

To truly understand a civilization, one needed to become a part of it.

Myriad Race Memoir...

A certain understanding dawned on him.

When the idea to forge a Myriad Race Memoir surfaced in his mind, this character took form. It allowed him to fully experience what it meant to be someone else. He finally understood.

"Myriad Race Memoir, remembering the myriad races, fusing the myriad races, studying the myriad races and their civilizations...such is the way of a true cultural researcher, the chronicler of civilizations."

A new term appeared in his mind. The chronicler of civilizations. Each era should have one such person. With the passing of eras, civilizations would be extinguished, and races would cease to exist.

Through the numerous wars between the myriad realms, race after race had vanished, staying in the annals of history. Some had vanished without leaving anything behind. Many a race had long been forgotten completely, all traces of their previous existence gone.

To explore civilizations. To explore the unknown. To seek civilizations. To study civilizations.

A refreshing sensation hit Su Yu, as though he had finally discovered his purpose in life.

"I...don't want to be a cultural researcher. I want to be a chronicler of civilizations. The golden book might also be a Myriad Race Memoir. It might belong to the chronicler of the previous era."

Was that the case?

That idea had emerged all of a sudden. The golden book might not be a character, after all. But he couldn't be sure of anything yet. However, he had a feeling that the creator of this book had the same intention: remembering civilizations.

There must be some records of the lost races and cultivation methods in the golden book as well.

However, their pages had merely remained inactive as Su Yu had not been able to obtain their blood essence. He was sure there were a lot more pages in the golden book. He had simply been incapable of activating them.

"But...why did the book pick me?"

He was confused. But he also understood something. He might be the successor of the chronicler of civilizations. The book was not meant for something as simple as enabling him to learn other cultivation methods. Rather, it was passing on an entire profession to him.

The profession was now known by Su Yu as the chronicler.

"Was there such a profession in the ancient past?"

While deep in thought, Su Yu stood up and entered the inner hall.

***

Inner hall.

Grandstar had just returned. But before he could get any rest, Su Yu was here again.

Liu Hong, who was standing near the door, was sent flying with a kick by Su Yu. He protested in fury, "Su Yu! You're pushing it!"

He was merely standing there. How did that earn him a kick?

Boom!

Su Yu shut the door in Liu Hong's face. He couldn't even be bothered to say anything in response. As of late, Liu Hong had been visiting the inner hall way too frequently. He had to get Xing Yue to stay on alert.

With the door shut, he bowed and hesitated slightly before asking, "Lord, I have a question. Can you dispel my confusion?"

"What is it?"

Su Yu thought about it and said, "Lord, were there a group of people in charge of recording the civilizations, auras, cultivation methods, cultures, customs, abilities, and everything about the myriad races during the ancient past?"

"Hmm?"

Grandstar's eyes opened abruptly.

He regarded Su Yu with a frown. After a long while, he said, "There were many such people. What are you referring to specifically?"

Su Yu explained, "A deeper level of record. It might even involve a thorough analysis of the many cultivation methods and conversion of those cultivation methods into something usable by the person recording."

After a long silence, Grandstar said, "I don't know. Perhaps...there were such people."

Su Yu was surprised to hear that.

Grandstar was about to say something when a different voice came from the death tunnel, "Are you talking about the time sage?"

"..."

Su Yu blanked out slightly before asking in a hurry, "Lord Xing Yue, do you know about this?"

"No."

Xing Yue paused for a long while before continuing, "I seem to have heard of this term before, but I can't remember anymore."

Grandstar said, "Her memories are incomplete. But...Xing Yue, are you sure such cultural researchers existed during the ancient past?"

Time sage sounded like a title a cultural researcher would have.

Was there such a title in the ancient past?

Grandstar was unsure. He didn't really know that much about the ancient past. After some hesitation, he said, "During the ancient past, the various daos bloomed. Numerous types of cultural researchers existed. This is not something I know too well."

Xing Yue said, "I don't know much as well. But when I heard your question, that term came to my mind out of nowhere. A time sage, also known as a time voyager...is something that I might have heard about when I was still alive."

Su Yu nodded. He asked curiously, "Lord Xing Yue, were you an important person during the ancient past?" Since she was an Invincible death spirit, she might be an Invincible before her death as well.

In any case, she wouldn't be a weakling. She might have been a well-known individual back then.

Xing Yue ignored the question.

Su Yu laughed and said, "Lord Xing Yue, there is no need for such hostility. I have been working hard to protect you. Just earlier, the humans offered to kill you for me. But I rejected the offer. Lord, my loyalty toward you is as enduring as the sun and the moon."

Challenged, Xing Yue said, "You can try killing me. Come on. Do it!"

She was a death sovereign! Could she be killed so easily? This was intolerable.

Su Yu hurriedly explained himself, "You misunderstand me, Lord. That has never been what I want. I only want to say that we're family. Our benefits are interlinked. You don't need to keep viewing me with hostility. Am I right, Lord?"

Xing Yue snorted.

After a slight pause, she warned, "Su Yu, I'm not scared of you! Do you think you can really suck me dry? Sooner or later, I'll turn you into a death spirit! Even if I can't, you will still die. You have too many enemies."

Su Yu smiled, "Exactly. If I die, I die. I'm not scared at all. After dying, I can serve you as your loyal subordinate. Together, we will unify the Death Realm. Lord, I have prepared even a life death fruit for that. With this fruit, I can regain my memories after death. After my death, we can challenge the Death Realm together!"

"Life death fruit?"

Xing Yue was stunned to hear that. After a long while, she roared furiously, "Who gave you that? I don't like this! You shouldn't remember all this after death!"

A death spirit with Su Yu's memories would most certainly be an extremely annoying death spirit. A bothersome death spirit.

Xing Yue was furious. She decided to give Su Yu the silent treatment.

This short conversation with Su Yu had greatly infuriated her.

With Xing Yue gone, Grandstar laughed and said, "Why did you tell her about the life death fruit?"

Su Yu said, "Knowing this, she won't be looking forward to my death anymore. I'm doing this as a precaution lest she decides to create trouble for me. She needs to know that even after dying, I will continue troubling her. She will never be free of me."

Sure, Xing Yue would hold more power over a death spirit. But by the time Su Yu became a death spirit, he would be an incredibly rare death spirit she had obtained with painstaking difficulty. Could she bear to do any permanent damage to such a death spirit?

Su Yu was only doing this to prevent Xing Yue from sabotaging him during a critical moment. No matter what, Xing Yue was the death sovereign who had converted Su Yu into a resident. She wasn't completely incapable of doing anything toward him.

With nothing else to say, Su Yu left the inner hall in silence while keeping the term he had heard from Xing Yue deep in his mind. Time sage. Or time voyager. No, rather than the two terms, he preferred calling himself a chronicler.

It sounded a lot more cultured. Did such a profession really exist in the ancient past?

Not even Grandstar knew the answer. Was Grandstar perhaps too unimportant during the ancient past to know about something like this? If his guesses about the golden book were right, it was likely that Grandstar had indeed been too unimportant to know.

Grandstar and the other guardians might not be weak, but they were probably not among the best during the ancient past.

***

When Liu Hong saw Su Yu leaving the inner hall, he stepped aside while cursing.

Su Yu continued ignoring Liu Hong as he walked while deep in thought. Suddenly, he stopped and turned. "Teacher Liu, I hope you can behave. You have been spending a lot of time in the inner hall lately. You have even been trying to seduce Xing Yue. Are you planning to move into the Death Realm?"

Su Yu said, "I won't stop you from going to the Death Realm, but don't cause trouble for me. Complete the task you have agreed to and everything will be fine. If you do something to ruin my plan, I will find you and kill you even if you're hiding in the Death Realm. Trust me on that, Teacher."

Liu Hong laughed awkwardly and said, "No, no, no. I'm a perfectly healthy person. Why would I want to enter the Death Realm? Su Yu, is there a misunderstanding somewhere?"

"I hope so."

Su Yu said, "Living or dead, they are all the same to me so long as they are sentient. They only differ in their shape, form, and power. I don't care about any of that. I do hope you can behave yourself until I'm out of the mansion before doing anything else."

"Definitely. With Lord Grandstar here, how would I dare to cause trouble?"

Su Yu asked, "Is that so? If there happens to be an attack, forcing Lord Grandstar to leave, you might be gone by the time he's back. I don't really care about what you want to do. But stay until I'm out of the mansion. If you believe you can hide from me forever, you are free to try me."

Su Yu sneered and said, "I believe I have learned a lot of your tricks. Don't worry. I'll also place some restrictions on you to reduce the temptation for you to do something stupid."

Liu Hong smiled awkwardly. Having said all that, Su Yu turned and left.

By the time Su Yu was gone, Liu Hong's smile faded, replaced by helplessness. The kid was only twenty. Why did the kid feel more and more abnormal nowadays? The kid was giving off the sensation of someone who had ascended the mundane world. What was happening with the kid?
