Chapter 346: The Uninvited Guest
Ragnar was confused, not because Zaroth was able to push him to that extent, nor because he had an undead dragon under his command—something that only his father should have been able to achieve. No, it was because of the blade he wielded.
As Ragnar slashed and the world lost color for the countless time, Zaroth met his attack, not backing down, the two were staggered back momentarily.
Under the assault of Zaroth’s beast, Ragnar didn’t have much time to think, yet his eyes always spared a brief glance at his odachi after each attack they exchanged.
’It has something to do with these runes!’ he realized.
It wasn’t inherently impossible for his attack to be matched in strength, but Zaroth’s weapon should have been broken long ago.
Yet it hadn’t—the only way Ragnar could explain the reason was because these runes played some kind of crucial role.
Even if he disliked the elves in general, he was well informed about their runes and was able to recognize their work instantly.
’It seems that I can’t win this fight.’ Ragnar realized, a solemn expression behind his helmet. He was no match for Zaroth and his dragon—that was for sure.
He had to flee and ask his father for reinforcements if they really wanted to kill Zaroth and capture the Abyss user.
Having made his decision, Ragnar’s fighting style changed. He wasn’t trying to best Zaroth anymore, instead beginning to look for a way out.
Naturally, Zaroth picked up on his enemy’s change in tactics at a moment’s notice.
"Is that all you got?!" he taunted, intensifying his attacks more and more.
A silent curse escaped from Ragnar’s mouth. He would have left already if it wasn’t for his stupid brother. He had to ensure his survival, else he might anger his father.
’Think! Think!’ his mind raced as he barely was able to avoid Zaroth’s slash and his beasta’s attacks.
’I can see it! Just a little more and I will win!’ Zaroth tensed his muscles even more, getting ready to attack, until—
"...?"
He had a very good connection with his beasts. He was able to communicate with them telepathically, give them orders, and they would comply at a moment’s notice. With time, his connection with them had increased so much that he was able to even take a guess how much mana one beast was taking every second.
That was why he instantly noticed something was wrong.
Silverfang that had been to his right suddenly began draining an absurd amount of mana! The wolf was a Rare beast and yet at this moment of time, he was taking more mana than Nightshade, who was of the Epic tier!
’Something is wrong,’ his instinct told him immediately.
He knew it was a bad idea to shift his gaze from Ragnar, yet he did it regardless.
"..."
Silverfang had been sliced in half so cleanly that it was almost to the uncanny level. The only way that could have happened was if Ragnar’s attack had hit the beast head-on, yet the man had never had the chance to get closer to the beast.
’ZAROTH, DEFEND!’ the worried voice of Luna echoed in his mind as she was the first one to realize what had happened.
With no questions asked, he activated Darkveil to its limit. In the Abyss, the demonic skill was at its most powerful form due to the dark nature of the place.
The darkness warped around him like the arms of a loving mother embracing her child. His protection had reached its peak.
A fraction of a second later, his eyes managed to pick up on the figure standing next to him.
Its skin—if it could be called that—was dark and had a faint purple hue, blending seamlessly with the surroundings.
Just the gaze of its six hollow eye sockets told Zaroth all he needed to know.
His hands moved by instinct, ready to defend, but he was too slow. freёnovelkiss.com
The creature hit him—instantly Darkveil was broken as if it was nothing before the creature.
The armor Zaroth was wearing below the robes didn’t help reduce the damage in the slightest, as he felt his insides shook, his ribs broken, piercing his lungs, making him cough blood. The sheer power of the hit was so mighty, he was lifted off his feet and shot away, flying hundreds of meters per second.
By a cruel twist of fate, Rynor stood in the path of Zaroth’s flying body—resulting in a brutal collision.
"What?" seeing Zaroth fly like a ragdoll, David was shocked beyond belief.
"Brat, get out of—" the Spectral Warden began to shout in worry but was stopped as the entity that had attacked Zaroth stood just behind it.
"Traitor," the abomination with six hollow eye sockets growled as it hit the Spectral Warden with lightning speed.
The guardian that always stood behind David disappeared in a flash as if it had never been there.
"NOO—" David’s cry was cut short as he too felt a devastating hit in his ribs.
All the energy that had been surging around his body was not enough, as he was lifted off his feet like a simple object.
Ragnar didn’t have much time to process what was happening, but his trained body moved with precision and purpose.
Running as fast as possible, he reached Rynor’s body that was lying on the ground. The False Prince was unable to move, having been hit by Zaroth’s flying body.
Bearing no mind to his brother’s injuries, Ragnar picked him up and they exited the Abyss. Once they were out, Ragnar put the unconscious body on his back, beginning to run far away from the place. His helmet hid his ghostly pale face.
"You are lucky you got off with just that," he muttered to his brother, knowing he wasn’t in a condition to hear him at all.
David, having been flung to a great distance and badly damaged due to the hit, knew instantly what he had to do as he dispelled the Abyss.
It was clear if he and Zaroth were to stay there any second longer, they were as good as dead.
A heartbeat later, rather than being on the cold black ground of the Abyss, he found himself on a familiar soil. He was back in his already ruined hometown.
"What happened?... Where… is Zaroth?" he asked aloud, struggling to stand, each breath ragged with pain.
Just from a single hit, he had been reduced to this pitiful state—not to mention, he was supposed to be at his strongest in the Abyss!
His eyes began to scan the surroundings, searching for his friend that was no doubt in bad shape, but was stopped as a low menacing voice called out.
"Did you think you could escape me a second time?"
David’s heartbeat stopped, gazing at the source of the voice.
He had assumed that exiting the Abyss would save them of any creature that could potentially crawl in it.
Unfortunately, seeing the towering figure standing tall, grinning with a cruel smile, he realized he’d made a terrible mistake.
As for some reason, the entity had found a way to follow them back to their world.
