Chapter 37: Mercenary Guild II - Rank Restored!
The unpopular elven wine, Chrysa, struggled to earn a profit for most elves. However, thanks to Leon and his deal with the Arlet innkeeper.
Thanks to the deal, a new version of wine appeared on the market.
A sweet and delicious alternative. The elven mistress used her skills, and the wine brought more people to the inn and Arlet village. She offered a discount to the merchants, so they tried the new wine called Papillon.
The elven mistress and Leon chose this name because the word meant—butterfly in ancient elvish.
"So your name was Veronica?" He gazed at the finished contract and the beautiful middle-aged woman with a bright smile. "Doesn't sound like an elf's name."
"Hahaha~ you've got me, my mother was quite progressive!"
'She's completely transformed in a single day!'
Leon collected loads of fruit when he met Zafira, though he hesitated at first.
Thanks to the contract, the elf named Veronica couldn't betray him or reveal the true source of the fruit. He also told Zafira to spread the news to the goblins. But Leon planned to have the dark elves deal with her in the future.
"Well that's the profit and costs dealt with, so would you like to consider telling me where to collect more fruit?"
He noticed her change in tone, speaking to him with a respectful and softer tone, compared to before their negotiations started. Perhaps it was thanks to their deal. Not that Leon minded. This would help him in the future.
"Well here is the current batch of fruit, I will send someone to trade in future, a dark elf."
When Veronica heard his words, her hand trembled, shaking as she accepted the fruit into her item ring, not saying anything else about what happened or how it appeared in Leon's possession.
"Will the supply be limited?"
"For now, yes. We're still growing the new trees," he nodded. "I believe growing a sort of premium might be ideal, for outside this village and the southern city."
She didn't ask what he meant, instead only nodded at his words. "Then how often can I expect shipments?"
"Once every two weeks, if you really need more, contact me through the mercenary guild." Leon nodded, as Veronica returned a nod.
'I plan to have her meet Nyxara after the business is stable.'
"Also," he smiled warmly, "don't pressure yourself alone, if there are issues or troubles I am happy to support you."
The beautiful elven mistress sighed, rolling her hair around her finger as she gazed up and down at Leonhardt, biting her lower lip.
"Where were you a hundred years ago?"
"Pardon?" He blinked.
Veronica let go of the lock of hair and straightened herself as she spoke. "Thank you, Leon. I know this is just business for you, but to me, it's something I've always dreamed about." She stood from her chair, Leon following suit as she walked out the door with him.
He couldn't understand what she meant by a hundred years, since she looked no older than twenty-six.
[You are being too kind, she looks like a 34-year-old!]
'She's beautiful though.'
[Shush!]
"Haha." Leon gave an awkward laugh as they left the back room of the inn, and into the tavern. And before he left, Veronica rushed back. "Oh wait!" Leon's ears perked at her sudden stop.
"Here," she handed him a small package, the scent of meat and ale steaming from the top. "You didn't eat all afternoon, so have some of the Papillon stewed steak I made."
[This damn Cougar, back away!]
Ifrit fumed and shouted in his mind, but Leon was only focused on the lunch box. His eyes were gleaming as Veronica tried to hide a smirk and coughed to regain her composure.
"Leonhardt, are you finally finished?" A soft, gentle voice called out. It came from a beautiful young woman sitting at a table. The elven women greeted her politely, then spun away.
"It has been a very productive day for us both," Leon replied.
Erina, with her long blonde hair tied into a side braid, with long bangs changed from her twin tails from earlier, sat upright. He noticed she was dressed differently; her outfit was not as conservative as usual but tight around the waist.
The entire tavern fell silent as everyone watched them both.
"A couple?" one whispered.
"Impossible."
"Our Erina cannot be dating!"
'I can hear these fools loud and clear, oh, it seems Erina can too.'
Leon forced a smile while observing the tinge of red on Erina's cheeks, growing redder by the moment. Erina was incredibly embarrassed, her eyes darting from left to right as she fought off the urge to stand up and shout at them to mind their own business.
'Well, a saintess being rumoured isn't good.'
"Where are the others?"
"Ahem! Asuka is sleeping, she seemed strange after her shower, and Sylvie is reading in her room..." She trailed off with her words, before giving Leon a wink as she stood.
The sudden wink caught Leon off guard, especially considering Erina was a saintess candidate.
"Let's go to the guild, come on." She urged.
With that, they turned toward the door and exited the inn. Leaving a bunch of surprised patrons and staff members gossiping about the odd pair. Although there weren't many rumours between elf and humans mating with each other, it was a rare occurrence.
After sitting in a dark and musty room all day, it was a breath of fresh air, as Leon took a deep breath and exhaled. Stretching his arms and neck, releasing a crack before relaxing.
Erina gave him a curious look after stepping outside, walking one step beside him.
"Do you really want to quest with us? We are quite selective, you know."
"I do not expect anything. But yes, if I am allowed, I would appreciate your company."
"M-Mine?"
"What?" Leon frowned as he glanced sideways at her. He noticed she was blushing. "What did you think I said?"

"H-huh!? Oh... Um, nothing forget about it," she waved off whatever she had heard.
"Haha, well, you make me feel comfortable, Asuka is fun and exciting and Sylvie is cute. However, I know you are strong, and won't flee if things get difficult."
At first, she blushed again when she heard 'comfortable,' before frowning at him, mentioning Asuka and Sylvie, until the last part made her lips curl up into a grin.
"I see." She muttered, followed by an awkward silence, which suited Leon. The two strolled through the streets, turning several heads, including most male mercenaries, glaring at Leon before storming off.
"H-Here we are."
Arriving outside the Mercenary Guild, their pleasant atmosphere faded as Leon sucked in the air, and pushed open the door, letting Erina in first, before entering himself. After which, he exhaled.
There were still no familiar faces within, except for the dark elf Aella.
Now Leon understood more about the dark elves.
He wondered how difficult it must be for her to survive and manage, when their kind used to be treated as inferior creatures by the elves and humans alike. Only thanks to the battle maidens of their race building some kind of reputation.
'Not sure why they sided with the elves.'
Today they would finally sign a contract together, creating a temporary party, with Erina holding Asuka and Sylvie's adventurer cards so she could accept the contract alone.
Though because they were a party, there were fewer issues with this.
"W-Welcome, I wondered when you might return." Aella leaned forward to gaze over the counter.
She looked at Erina with a puzzled expression before leaning back and resuming her regular posture as they approached her desk.
"Leon, what would you like to do today?" She asked him with a bright smile.
"Hello Aella," Leon said before turning to Erina. "One second, let me just pay my fine."
With that, he handed the gold coin needed to resume mercenary activities, the amount of cash on his card listed in the corner.

'Thanks to Veronica, I have enough for supplies and necessities'
Erina watched Leon as he finished renewing his pass.
The mercenary group returning to D-rank. Now, his silver badge wouldn't be rejected by any guards in this huge intermontane basin.
The place where Leonhardt is active.
A massive mountain range wraps around his dungeon, and the south forming a complete circle, with only two exists.
To the south is the Capital of the Gladius Kingdom and past that the Kingdom of Avaria, which is at war with the Gladius Kingdom.
North over the mountains is the former dragon territory and now the Demon Empire, then to the west is neutral land filled with monsters, and a place that leads to the Elven territories.
