Chapter 25 – Weekly Allowance
The question caused Alexander’s gaze to harden. "Don’t forget that this marriage is just a contract. Five months and a few weeks, and we shall go our separate ways. No more questions."
He was already wheeling himself to his room, and if it were before the revelation, Joanna would have given up, but not when their marriage was soon going to be announced to the world.
After the divorce, she would be the one to face uncomfortable situations, even if she decides to relocate as Alex suggested.
There were so many enemies, and surely, they would be happy to hear about the divorce. Alex would be united with that woman he talked about, and she would be left to start all over.
"You have to understand that aside from my shares, you are gaining more in this marriage than I am. The least you can do is be nice."
Alex halted from where he had reached with the wheelchair, spinning it around to face her.
Joanna had every right to think that way because she didn’t know the plans he had for her, but it wasn’t as if he was going to tell her.
For the six months, it would be worth it, and she will be well paid, so how was Alex going to be the greatest benefactor of this agreement?
To not complicate matters, Alex thought of a smart way. "If you can tell me about your childhood, then I will tell you."
That should be easy, right? Exactly what Joanna thought, but as she tried to remember anything about her childhood, nothing came up.
"I...I can’t remember." She was suddenly stammering, Alex shrugged. "Then I also can’t remember why I killed that bastard."
He had no regrets for what he did. That man deserved it, and even if Alex had a chance, he would still put a bullet in his late father’s skull in his grave.
It dawned on Joanna that something was wrong. She never remembered anything about her relationship with Colton, and it was the same as her childhood. There weren’t any memories whatsoever.
’I have to ask mom about my condition, and if she refuses, then I will see a neurologist to help me remember everything,’ she thought to herself, but only the sound of the closing door met her ears, and Alex was no longer there.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, she went to her room. The weekend passed without her seeing Alex, not knowing when he went out or when he came in.
It was like they lived in the same house and yet never saw each other. On Monday, she was dressed for work after having a chat with her mother on the phone.
The pleasurable amenities in the mansion like the sauna, pool, and even with the maids at her beck and call were not enough to keep her excited.
The maids would not give her any information, only caring for her needs. Betty was like a mother hen, so protective of her, Joanna felt like she needed some fresh air.
Then Violet came to mind. Perhaps she could invite her over for them to go visit her mom together later.
Seemed like a perfect plan, except what she was met with downstairs. "Good morning, ma’am, my name is Jack, your bodyguard."
Joanna stared at the tall, blonde hunk in front of her, his expression too serious for her liking. He made no move to shake her hand, which put her at ease, but could not imagine going everywhere with this man.
"I don’t know what you are talking about." She tried to walk around him and hit the road, but he was already in front of her, maintaining a reasonable distance.
"Mr. King assigned me to accompany you everywhere. He also said to drive any car you choose so we can head to the garage now," he turned to face her as he spoke.
"Garage?" Joanna didn’t remember seeing a garage. Ike had met them in front of the door the last time, and they had no business in the garage.
"Sorry, but she has to eat first," Betty interrupted, Joanna did not know whether to laugh or cry.
This woman was going to torment her with food again, and if care was not taken, she might put on a lot of weight. "Sir made it clear that Madam should always eat before leaving the house."
"I’m not hungry," Joanna said seriously, but for as long as it concerned her health, no one would obey her.
"Then I’m afraid you can’t leave."
Joanna thought of another way of getting herself out on time. "Why not pack it for me? I’m interested in seeing the garage."
Betty agreed and went to do as suggested, but when Joanna reached the garage, her jaws dropped. "This is insane. What does he do with all these cars?"
There was no luxury car missing in the garage, and there were at least fifty of them. Now she wished Alexander had just maintained his low-key profile of an IT officer.
She would have had her freedom like before. At the thought, she wondered if those secrets he kept were rather to keep her safe. As soon as she found out his identity, everything changed with it, and she knew for the next six months that her life would never be the same again.
"He said you are free to use anyone of your choice."
Joan was about to choose the Porsche, as she always loved its design. To her, they looked a little feminine, but she also remembered how that might easily expose her status.
She couldn’t be seen as the wife of a billionaire, right? "Let’s take the cheapest."
She watched in awe as Jack walked to the Jaguar and reminded him. "I said the cheapest."
"This is the cheapest, ma’am," he crushed her hopes. All the cars were so expensive, but she Joanna could not argue anymore.
She’ll just make sure nobody was watching before she steps out of the car at the parking lot.
Betty arrived in time, and Joanna took the food from her, about to open the door when Jack stopped her.
"Sorry, ma’am, but the boss specifically said you should not be allowed to touch any door or pay any bills. I will get fired if that happens."
Joanna could not believe her ears. "What?"
Joanna was dialing Alex’s number, but once again, it was switched off. Yet, the moment she ended the call, she received an alert.
A hundred-thousand-dollar bank transfer with the message, ’weekly allowance.’
Joanna was dazed; she began to dial the number again, but it was switched off. If she couldn’t pay any bills, then why give her so much weekly allowance?
Reaching the office, she was not met with the excitement she usually would, but seeing the person in her chair, she soon figured out why.
