Chapter 24: Chapter 24 – I can take it from here

Cole shivered at the sound of the voice, recalling Logan’s words about Alex killing his father.

Monica was equally curious, wondering which hospital staff member had the audacity to speak with such confidence.

Cole knew Alex would follow through with the threat, cursing Joanna in his heart before gritting his teeth.

Walking to the door, he unlocked it, but as soon as he pulled it open, a punch was sent right to his groin. He groaned in pain as Joanna rushed in to hug her mother, bypassing Alex and Cole.

"Mom, are you alright?" She felt her mother shivering and crying like a baby, something she had never seen her do before.

It was all Cole’s fault, and Joanna was very upset, not caring about whatever punishment Alex would mete out to him.

The doctors went in to check on Monica as well, but Cole, ducking from the pain, made it easy for two more punches to be sent to his face, causing him to pass out instantly.

No one would have believed that a punch from a cripple would result in a medical emergency.

Fear and panic saturated the atmosphere as the doctors contemplated attending to the unconscious man on the floor.

In the end, one of them asked the man in the wheelchair, "Should we attend to him?" They had no idea who he was, but his actions made it clear that he was not to be messed with.

Alex was furious at how he intended to deal with his father-in-law, but Cole was too weak, already unconscious.

"Throw him at the car park," Alex said coldly. What a narrow escape. Well, Cole did not deserve to be treated humanely since he never treated Joanna or her mother with respect.

The doctors knew Cole’s condition was not serious, allowing the security who had just arrived to do as told.

Monica was shocked to see Alexander after regaining herself when Cole’s unconscious body was carried away.

The resemblance was obvious, though there were still some differences between Alex and his father. "I never thought I’d see you in person. I heard a lot about you."

With a neutral expression, Alex replied, "There isn’t anything good about me in the media, so I won’t ask." His gaze and voice softened. "How are you feeling?"

Monica smiled, feeling better with the people around her. Alex might look like Mathias, but his aura was like that of his grandfather, Aristotle, whom Monica had met only twice in person.

Mathias was easygoing, but it did not seem to be the same with the man in the wheelchair. "I’ll be fine. Thanks for helping out. Joan, why didn’t you tell me about him?"

She only knew because Cole had mentioned that Joanna married a man in a wheelchair. Well, the equipment did nothing to hide the fact that Alex was a sophisticated person.

"You weren’t fine the first time and couldn’t remember a lot of things. The doctors were going to begin treating you for early dementia after your recovery," Joanna explained, but her mother smiled at her.

"It might not be necessary. I can remember things clearly now," the middle-aged woman said. Joanna would have asked a lot of questions if Alex was not there.

Given the current situation, all she could ask was, "So, what did he want?"

Monica went quiet, unable to reveal the details of her conversation with Cole, especially the part that upset her. "Just forget about him."

Joanna was perplexed, annoyed by her mother’s habit of keeping secrets, and nagged, "I want to know why he came, Mom. You can’t keep it to yourself."

Monica did not want to mention her lost daughter, so there was no way to tell Joan what she wanted to hear.

"I’m tired. Please take me home to rest," she requested. Joanna was deflated and stared at Alex.

"I can take it from here."

Alex was about to agree, but his phone rang. After answering the call, his face hardened, but all he said was, "Okay."

After ending the call, he beckoned for Joanna to come over and whispered in her ear, "Logan is up to something. It will be better for you to come with me until I know what he’s up to."

"And Mom?" Joanna was disturbed, but Alex calmly assured her, "I’ve arranged for someone to take care of her at home. You don’t have to worry about her safety, but she will be in danger if you are constantly around her."

Joanna wanted to disagree, but after all that Logan had put up at the old King’s mansion, there was no reason to doubt Alex. freēwēbnovel.com

They waited until the caregiver Alex had arranged arrived before they left.

Reaching the car park, Cole was on the floor, close to his car, so Alex intentionally wheeled himself close, making sure to run the wheels of the wheelchair over Cole’s legs in the process, which brought him to a state of consciousness.

"Ouch, what the..." his words were swallowed by the sight of Alex, as he endured the pain from what he did to his legs.

However, Alex wheeled himself close again, forcing Cole to lift himself from the floor or end up being crushed once more.

Standing up with difficulty, Cole barely managed to stay on his feet when his legs felt like jelly, sending him back to the floor.

Tears stung the corners of his eyes when Joanna laughed out loud, but Cole could only grit his teeth and endure the pain, knowing there was nothing he could do.

"This is your first and last warning. Don’t ever get close to the people I call family, and that includes my wife and everyone close to her," Alex said coldly, before allowing Ike to help him into his car with Joanna.

They did not care how Cole would get himself home in his condition. That was entirely up to him for daring to mess with Alexander King’s mother-in-law.

Arriving home, Joanna seized the opportunity while helping Alex upstairs. "At the office, were you the one?"

Alex’s expression changed instantly. "I don’t know what you are talking about."

Joanna refused to let go, holding onto the hand grip of the wheelchair. "Your legs were fine then. You came for a meeting, and I was in a bad mood, so when you asked if I had brains because I couldn’t figure out what your meeting was about, I got upset."

Alex had planned a different form of revenge on her, but when she spoke like this, his heart softened.

"So, you decided to paste ’I am an asshole’ on my back to make my subordinates mock me? Well, you won, so what next?"

Joanna was remorseful. "I want to apologize. I’m usually not like that, but you started it."

"I thought you were the receptionist, and you should have told me you weren’t," Alex explained. Joanna pointed out,

"Someone of your status should have an assistant."

"Who said I don’t?"

He did not seem upset, so even without voicing it, Joanna knew he didn’t hold a grudge concerning the events of that day against her. "Can I ask one last question?"

"What is it?" Alex asked, slightly irritated.

"Why did you kill your father?"
