Chapter 23 - You Never Loved Me

Chapter 23: Chapter 23 - You Never Loved Me

When Cole arrived at the hospital earlier, it was not hard for him to locate the VIP ward after speaking to a few nurses.

Monica was chatting with her caretaker over a movie they were watching after being discharged and waiting for Joanna.

She was still on pain and antibiotics medication at the moment and was glad for the company of her caregiver.

There were lots of questions on her mind to ask her daughter, including how she got money for the surgery when a voice interrupted her thoughts, taking her attention momentarily from the screen.

"I think she’s hiding something," the caregiver, Sharon, said. Monica agreed. "I think so too."

"But..." the caregiver was saying when interrupted by the rude opening of the door.

Monica was startled to see the man at the door. It had been over a decade since they saw eye to eye, and some of his hair had turned grey, blending in with the blonde.

"Cole, what do you want here?" Monica asked in a calm tone, glad to have a loose hat over her head to hide the incision.

Cole looked angry but did not immediately respond to her. His attention was directed at Sharon. "Excuse us."

Sharon refused. The man before her was not welcoming, so she could not leave Monica’s side with him there. "I’m sorry, but Miss..." She was saying when Cole yelled.

"Get out or I’ll make you."

Monica forced a bitter smile before saying to Sharon, "It’s alright."

Sharon was reluctant but obeyed, immediately calling Joanna on the phone, after which she alerted some of the hospital staff.

In there, Cole was enraged, not caring about Monica’s condition. After things went sour between them, he vowed to never see her face again, but certain situations demanded desperate approaches.

"So, this is how your so-called ’you don’t care about your shares’ ends, right?" His tone was taunting as he glared down at her.

Monica was sitting on the bed, tired of lying on her back for over a week. Cole’s statement sent a blaze of confusion through her mind, but before she could ask, he continued. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

"Sending Joanna into the arms of Alexander King to make our lives miserable?"

The sound of the name sent mixed emotions sprawling through her. The clause in the contract was for Joanna to marry before taking her inheritance, but not to just anyone.

That part was only known to her and the person with whom she went into agreement before the second part.

"What are you talking about?" She couldn’t believe that things had fallen into place without her trying.

Years after, she regretted putting in that clause, and since she couldn’t change it, she decided to forgo the shares. But when her health deteriorated, she couldn’t watch her daughter suffer and hence mentioned it.

"The clause about her marriage, in case you are that dumb," Cole rubbed it in. Monica was enraged, though her voice was still as calm as the sea breeze.

"Get out, Cole. I’m still recovering from surgery."

Sadly, Cole was far from making it easy for her. "So what? Why don’t you just die?" He sniggered, glaring coldly at her.

Monica knew it was all because of the lies fed to him by his wife Rene, but she was far from caring about that.

Everything was her mistake, and she had to accept it. "My only mistake was loving someone like you."

"You never loved me," Cole opposed. "I was just a consolation for your first love, Mathias. That is why you never cared if I was there for you or not."

There was an iota of truth in his words, so she could not refuse but was curious. "What do you want?"

"Everything. Tell your daughter to stay away from us," Cole placed his demand. If Joanna had not appeared in their lives, things would not have gone so bad for them, but Monica chuckled.

"You know what, Cole, I was blind before but not anymore. If Joan wants the shares, then she must have them. But wait, if she doesn’t have it, then how did she foot my bills?"

The question settled on her mind once more, and she could not help asking the wrong person, receiving a heartbreaking revelation.

"She’s just a whore like you, marrying some cripple because he’s rich."

Monica smiled, as it was confirmed the second time. "Joanna is destined for Alexander. I promised Mathias."

After all he did to her, he was still the one to show up at the last moment.

Mathias was there when Joanna was born, so she indeed had to throw her grudge aside and show her appreciation, though things could never work out between them.

"Yes, somehow, they got married." Cole’s voice was coated with pain, as if he lost everything.

He expected Monica to be happy, but she was rather sad. "What? Don’t pretend like you aren’t happy she nailed some big shot."

"It’s not your business why I’m sad. Cole, I need to breathe. Your presence is choking." She knew that Alexander had changed with time.

It started with his grandfather, and that was one of the reasons Monica had to change Joanna’s name and leave New York City for a long time.

Coming back, she never believed she was going to run into the same thing she escaped from.

"You are so full of bad luck. None of the men you slept with will marry you. So pathetic, but I’m curious. Where is that young daughter of yours?" Cole asked sarcastically, but this time, Monica could not take it.

The topic about her younger daughter was out of the equation. "It’s none of your business. Get out."

Cole was excited to see her like that. "I’m not getting out until you tell me about her. Where is she, Monica?" He demanded mockingly, perceiving that something terrible had happened to that child, but that was the last straw for the camel’s back.

The woman who has always spoken in a calm voice suddenly flared up and began yelling. "Get out, Cole. I said, out. You have no right to question me. Leave me alone and go back to that two-faced woman you married."

Cole wanted to taunt her even more but was interrupted by a knock on the door, yet he would not open it. When Monica tried to get off the bed to the door, Cole locked and removed the key.

He swung the key around his forefinger. "Here. You sound jealous, but who is the father of that bastard daughter of yours? Why hasn’t Joanna mentioned her?"

Monica was having a headache; it was terrible. The thought of losing her younger daughter had not been easy, but Cole was rubbing it in so casually. "I said get out." Her eyes welled up in tears as she hugged herself tightly after sitting back on the bed, but in all this, Cole was still unremorseful.

"I won’t leave until you give me what I want," he said. Tears streamed down Monica’s face, about to yell again when a familiar domineering male voice sounded behind the door.

"Cole, I’m counting to three. If you don’t open this door, I will send your roasted body to your family."
