Alex was on his way to the base when he remembered something and changed direction the moment he reached the familiar street.

"Let’s see Monica before going to the base," he said.

Ike understood and instantly turned the wheel. One of the caretakers welcomed him as soon as he entered the house.

The security and all the bodyguards were his men, so no one questioned him when he was led to Monica’s room.

A lot of surprises awaited Joanna should she return to her mother’s house, as two maids had also been employed with the intention that the two should never be off duty at the same time.

Alex was not expecting Monica to be on call with Joanna, feeling awkward when the phone was given to him. But before he said a word, he heard Joanna say,

"Ma’am, Violet is here so I’m gonna have to call you back."

Relieved to have escaped the awkward moment, he was about to end the call when he heard a male voice.

"Vi, you didn’t tell me how stunning your girlfriend was."

Alex felt a strange surge of emotions cruising through him but heard a familiar voice respond. "And she’s also married so back off, or I’ll castrate you myself."

The rest was followed by laughter, as Alex relaxed, feeling that Violet could indeed be a very good person to have around.

He ended the call and returned the phone to Monica, addressing her as his mother. "Mom, Joanna and I are already married but we shall be having a wedding. It’s a family tradition, which would warrant you walking her down the aisle."

This was not a matter to discuss, being Joanna’s responsibility in breaking the news, but Alex needed something to leverage before making his intentions known.

"When is the wedding?" Monica was casually eating fruits, which she paused and asked. Her meals were now strictly monitored by a dietician, and she could not help but wonder when her life changed so much.

"In three weeks," Alex revealed. Monica was elated, not having walked the aisle in her life before. It was a good thing her daughter was going to do so.

"That’s great. I will be strong by then, but tell me. Do you love my daughter?" She asked seriously. Alex stiffened.

Love was not in his dictionary, but he understood basic things like doing the right thing. Unable to answer, he rather asked, "Mom, I want to ask you a question?"

The middle-aged woman was smart enough to deduce his intentions and retorted,

"Alex, my daughter has suffered a lot. All I want is for her to be happy, and if you can’t give her that, then please let her go. I don’t want her to end up like me."

Being hit by the request like a tsunami, it was still not enough to make him guilty, his plans for Joanna being those of good.

"She will never end up like you, I can assure you, but there are things between us that I can’t directly tell you."

It was understandable for couples to have their own challenges, so Monica could only smile. "I understand."

"Okay. I have a little problem," Alex hinted, ready to make his intentions known.

"What is it?" Eagerness laced Monica’s voice as she asked. Alex smiled a little.

"I asked Joanna about her childhood, but guess what?" He watched as the smile on Monica’s face disappeared instantly and added, "She couldn’t remember anything."

He was disheartened when the middle-aged woman broke down. "It was one of our darkest moments," she recounted. Alex was glad she was ready to open up to him without too much coaxing.

"Please tell me, so I can know how to help you both."

Monica stared at him and smiled through tears, her eyes reddening with it. "Your father was my first love, but he chose a wealthy woman over me."

Alex remembered his grandfather recounting that story and urged her on. "I’m sorry, but I know the story. Then you met Cole, and he also broke your heart. What happened next?"

He was curious to learn about Joanna’s kid sister and why nobody mentioned her. Since he was looking for someone, there was a possibility for it to be anybody.

"I made a promise to your father that I was going to name Joanna Adelaide like he wanted, but his wife wanted me dead so I escaped. She’s your mother, so I know how it can be for you. She wasn’t particularly an angel."

Alex forced a smile. No one knew his parents better than him. "I know that, but I still love her."

Monica said nothing to that, only recounting her story. "She gave birth to you, so it’s understandable. She always felt that Joanna was Mathias’s child, so to hide away, I just abbreviated the name in the middle and made Joanna the first name. Then I met a man in Chicago. We fell in love, and I got pregnant for him. He took great care of us, took Joanna under his wing."

Her voice faltered at the ending, as a tear slid down her cheek, which she quickly wiped. Alex had a feeling something nasty had happened, asking, "Is he still alive?"

"No. He never married me for reasons I only knew after his death."

Discomfort washed over Alex, increasing his curiosity. "What’s his name, and how did it happen?"

Monica hoped that the last man she loved would receive justice, and with Alex being from a powerful family, she had no choice but to trust him with that.

"His name is Enzo. He insisted that we keep our relationship a secret and never allowed me to work. He provided everything for us in Chicago, and we were comfortable. I had a daughter for him, Nancy."

The name sounded familiar to Alex, even when the surname had not been mentioned. Well, most people were only addressed by their first names, so he could not be wrong, only needed to confirm one thing. "Where is she?"

If he had an idea of what happened to Nancy, then he could confirm the identity of Enzo, but Monica was reluctant at this moment, perplexing his intentions.

With a frustrated sigh, he made it clear to her, in a respectful manner. "Look. If I have to help you, then you have to be transparent with me."
