Chapter 32 – Joanna Survived

Chapter 32: Chapter 32 – Joanna Survived

Monica had no choice but to trust him with the things she couldn’t tell Joanna, not because she enjoyed hiding things from her, but because of the psychological trauma.

"She’s dead," she revealed with a bitter smile, tears streaming down her cheeks. Alex picked up a tissue and handed it to her, wondering how she could be crying and smiling at the same time.

It might have been a bitter smile, but he couldn’t help being puzzled, asking, "How?"

Monica narrated the story to him. "Five years ago, I received news that Enzo died in a crossfire with some gangs. That’s when I found out he worked for Salvadore."

Alex’s heart sank. Who knew that his secret identity would come back to haunt him? Most of the work was not done by him but rather by his men, most of whom didn’t know his true identity.

Strange as it seemed, his palms were wet with sweat from the revelation, showing how nervous he was.

"Where did you get this information?"

"From the news," Monica revealed. Alex relaxed a little. A lot of lies were spread in the news by the media these days, so it might not be what he was thinking, but Monica’s words were piercing.

"Salvadore is heartless. I don’t know what caused Enzo’s death, but Salvadore’s men found us. I tried to protect my children, but Nancy came out of hiding and was taken away. I heard gunshots and her screams after she was taken away, while one of his men restrained me."

Alex was relieved that the people who worked with him as Salvadore were different from those who worked with him as Alexander.

"When was that?"

"A year after Enzo died, and that was when I started working to take care of Joan. That night, she wanted to go rescue her sister, but in the darkness, she fell and hit her head, falling into a coma for almost a year."

Alex was disheartened to hear all this, but he had to go back into his archives to remember exactly what happened and what led to all this.

Monica was too absorbed by the pain in her heart to notice the paleness of Alex’s face.

"Joanna survived, but during her final year of college, she got into a fight and hit her head again. That’s how she lost her memories, so I came back here with all the money I had left after selling off all assets. Then I took on jobs to take care of her until I couldn’t work anymore because of my health."

Alex now understood the reason for Joan’s memory loss, but with the cause of it pointing to him, he was even more scared if she found out.

He was never scared of anyone, but why was he suddenly scared of his contracted wife? Alex always tried to do the right thing, so if he made a mistake this time, it would be a huge blow to him.

"According to doctors, she can never regain those memories, so I try my best to prevent her from meeting those from her past who might drop a hint to make her aware of how incomplete her life was," Monica concluded. But Alex recalled something related to his conversation with Colton before sending him away.

"What about Colton?"

Monica smiled genuinely at the question but remembered how she almost made a mistake and told Joanna about Colton.

"Joan and Colton were high school sweethearts. When I found out Joanna lost her memory, I didn’t want Colton to complicate things for her, so I never informed him about our departure. Coincidentally, he appeared in her life again."

Regarding Colton, Alex knew he did the right thing by sending him away. "I see. Thank you for telling me."

He was typing something on his phone when Monica added, "Please don’t tell her. She will be worried because of how much she loved her sister."

"When the incident happened, Joanna couldn’t get over Nancy’s death, and before she lost her memory, she was determined to find Salvadore and put a gun to his head, even if it meant risking her own life. That’s why I’m glad for the memory loss. It’s better and safer for us." fгeewebnovёl.com

Alex felt entangled in a web. All along, he thought he was on top of his game, but hearing this, there seemed to be something lacking.

Enzo might be guilty, but what about Nancy? He had to find out the truth and the details of that story, knowing exactly where to find it.

"Thank you for trusting me. I got you something." He had finished typing away, and as soon as Ike received the text, he appeared behind Alex with a bouquet of white flowers.

Taking them from Ike, Alex handed them to Monica, whose face brightened instantly. "Thank you, Alex, you spoil me."

She couldn’t remember the last time anyone gave her flowers after Enzo’s death. "Can I ask you a question?" She asked, but Alex’s phone coincidentally started ringing, and he ignored it.

"Yes, anything."

Monica smiled, and hope resonated in her eyes. "Do you know who Salvadore is?"

Alex froze instantly, taking an interest in the call rather than the question since it wouldn’t be good to lie to a motherly figure in his life.

Monica might be Joanna’s mother, but she was also his father’s first love. From what Alex saw, his father never stayed faithful to his mother because he never got over Monica.

It created enmity between him and his father, watching how his mother was emotionally neglected throughout their marriage. No wonder she tried to harm Monica.

"Please let me answer this call."

Monica was not happy. All she needed was a simple yes or no answer, but at the same time, Alex received an alert when he was on the phone.

"Alex, where are you?" It was Aiden, but Alex did not answer, momentarily lowering the phone and staring at the bank alerts he was receiving. What exactly was Joanna up to?

"I will be there in ten minutes," he answered before ending the call and turning to Monica, grateful for the narrow escape.

"Mom, I will see you again, but if you need anything, do call me."

By the time Alex arrived at the base, he had received multiple alerts and could not pay Aiden attention with all the blaring music.

"Alex, why are you on your phone? The girls are coming out. Can you make her out?" Aiden asked, and Alex’s attention shifted from the phone instantly as he looked among the chain of women for that particular one...
