Chapter 48: SURPRISE VISIT

Chapter 48: SURPRISE VISIT

"By the way, Harlow, is it strange that this black car has been following us since the Mall?" Lay asked nervously.

Harlow glanced behind them and immediately recognized the familiar black car. Her chest tightened, her father must have sent his spies to watch her.

"Take us to the Hamilton residence," she instructed the chauffeur without hesitation. The driver nodded and smoothly turned the car around.

Harlow had no other option. Returning to her apartment was too risky, the last thing she wanted was for her father’s goons to find out where she stayed. She couldn’t go to Lay’s place either, her father would destroy Lay’s family without a second thought. For now, she needed to throw him off her trail, and the Hamiltons’ home was the perfect cover.

If her father believed the Hamiltons were supporting her, he would think twice before taking action. After all, Claudia was engaged to marry into their family.

The car rolled to a stop in front of Grandma Hamilton’s villa. Harlow took a flower she had picked up from the mall and stepped out with Lay. As they approached the grand, inviting home, Lay couldn’t help but marvel at its beauty.

"It’s incredible," Lay whispered, taking in the warmth and elegance of the villa.

Harlow, however, felt a pang of déjà vu as old memories came rushing back.

She and Alex had spent countless days in this mansion, keeping Grandma company, playing games, and caring for her on difficult days when her symptoms worsened.

It’s surprising everything was still as the same as it was back then. But then she realized she was in the back then and smiled.

Whenever Alex returned from school, he would run straight to his grandmother, tears in his eyes, longing to be with her. Harlow’s chest ached at the memory. She had lost her son... no, Alex had been murdered. Brutally and unjustly.

But by whom?

What she missed in her past life was how Alanis’s face was when he found out their son had died due to his negligence.

She could already picture his face. Indifferent. Unmoved. He had never loved Alex anyway. From the day their son was born, Alanis had been absent, emotionally, physically, entirely.

Harlow wiped away a tear before Lay could notice. The pain of those memories was like a wound that refused to heal. Alanis had not only failed as a father but as a husband as well. If there was ever a trophy, he is sure going to win worst father of the year.

When the doctor told her about her miscarriage, he’d shown no remorse, no mercy. He was there, he had heard it. He rather walked away with Claudia.

For crying out loud, that was his child too. Maybe if he has shown a little sympathy, maybe, just maybe, that act alone would have saved her life. He may have at least protected their child.

In this life, Harlow vowed, Alanis would pay for every ounce of suffering he had caused her and Alex.

The front door opened, and Evelyn, the housekeeper, greeted them warmly. "Good evening, madam."

Harlow nodded politely, letting Evelyn take her purse and coat. She did the same for Lay before leading them inside.

Evelyn was a fine young girl, in her past life, she had been the only one that actually cared.

"Where’s Grandma?" Harlow asked with a polite smile.

"You’re just in time, Miss Harlow. She’s having dinner. She’ll be delighted to see you," Evelyn replied, motioning them toward the dining room.

Harlow entered, only to stop short at the sight of Alanis sitting across from his grandmother. The last person she expected, or wanted, to see.

No imagination could have made her believe this man would be here.

Shouldn’t he be at work?

She knew his schedule well, even after five years of marriage. This was not his usual time to be home.

Alanis’s eyes met hers, and his brow arched in surprise. Was she here to finally beg for forgiveness?

But shouldn’t that be in his Villa?

Perhaps Jane had told her where he was. A smug smile played on his lips. Seven days hadn’t even passed, and here she was, crawling back as he had expected.

He leaned back in his chair, planning his next move. He would play hard to get, reject her first, and let her feel the sting of his indifference before allowing her back into his life. But before he could relish the thought further, Harlow rolled her eyes at him and looked away.

His smirk faded, replaced by irritation. This woman and her mood swings, when would she act normal again?

Still, a small chuckle escaped him. Was this another ploy to seduce him?

"Harlow, my dear, you’ve come to visit!" Grandma Hamilton exclaimed, her face lighting up.

Harlow smiled warmly and walked over to hand her the flower. "I was coming from the mall, and this place is closer to my apartment, so I thought I’d stop by," she said smoothly.

"How thoughtful of you. This flower is lovely," Charlotte said with a bright smile, inhaling its scent.

She hoped, deep down, that Harlow and Alanis could work things out. But she also knew what Harlow had endured. If her granddaughter-in-law chose not to return to such a family, she would support that decision wholeheartedly.

"Come, come, eat with us," Charlotte said, gesturing to the seat beside her.

Harlow took the seat and noticed Evelyn placing sugary desserts on Grandma’s plate. She quickly swapped them out.

"Evelyn, if you keep giving her these, they might cause her discomfort. Natural sweets are better," she said firmly.

"I am so sorry maam." Evelyn quickly apologized, replacing the items with fresh fruits and proper food.

"Grandma, when’s your next appointment? I’d like to come with you," Harlow asked.

"Granddaughter, I’ve never mentioned having dementia. How do you know about it?"

Harlow’s hands froze mid air but she recovered quickly and smiled. It was true, grandma Hamilton never mentioned having Dementia, though in her past life the woman was diagnosed with dementia.
