Chapter 49: THS WAR BETWEEN A FATHER AND DAUGHTER

Harlow’s hands froze mid air but she recovered quickly and smiled. "Grandma, I’ve heard you talk about forgetting things so I assume what I wasn’t meant to. Not to worry, everything will be settled after the next appointment."

"How very thoughtful of you." Charlotte smiled. Her eyes then shifted to Lay who has been quiet since she got here.

"Who are you?"

"Oh sorry for the late introduction grandma, this is Layla Richmond." Harlow introduced. "She’s my best friend." She smiled.

Alanis stared at the young girl, in his previous life,he wasn’t sure he had met any Layla Richmond being aquainted to his wife, unless something happened to her.

"I am happy to be welcomed into your home." Lay said she stared at Harlow who smiled back at her. She’d seen Alanis countless times on the news, but never did she imagine he would be this good looking in person.

But that didn’t mean she didn’t want to hit his head and teach him a good lesson for messing with her best friend. No matter how handsome he looks, he’s still an asshole for playing with her Harlow.

All Harlow deserves in life is so much peace and love, no torture and suffering.

After dinner that night, Harlow sent a message to Richie about purchasing an apartment for her the next and to also tell Ava not to worry and that she wouldn’t be returning back tonight.

She explained to Richie the reason why. If her father finds out she was living in a luxurious house as that, he would burn it down the next day. Harlow couldn’t afford him destroying everything she’s worked so hard for. She would need to lay low till whenever he’s calmed down.

As if reading her thoughts, Frank called immediately. She calmed her nerve and picked the call, "father."

"What finds have you been collecting from the company to that Hamilton boy?" He asked sternly and Harlow froze.

He wasn’t supposed to discover the funds until much later. How had things escalated so drastically? Was it possible that Claudia had been collecting funds in Harlow’s name even before her marriage?

In her previous life, her father’s hatred toward her had stemmed from those funds. But in this life, the contempt he harbored seemed to burn even brighter, and she hadn’t even hacked into the company system yet or attempted to dismantle it. That was what had earned his early wrath before.

"I never took any funds from the company," she said firmly, though her voice wavered slightly under the weight of his fury.

"You can play innocent all you want, but you’ll pay for every penny you stole," her father spat coldly through the phone. His tone was venomous, each word sharper than the last. "I’ll send you the full details of what you owe. You have two weeks to pay up, or I’ll take everything you think you have, your so-called life, your apartment, and that boy you’re so fond of."

The line went dead before Harlow could respond, leaving her gripping the phone tightly, her hands trembling.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. How could it all spiral out of control so quickly?

Two weeks. That was all the time he was giving her to resolve a mess she hadn’t even caused.

"Is everything alright, dear?" Grandma Hamilton asked softly, her keen eyes fixed on Harlow. She had watched the girl’s expression shift in the span of seconds, from a look of fierce determination to one of barely concealed fear.

Harlow hesitated, her mind racing, before finally speaking. "Grandma, the real reason I came here today wasn’t... wasn’t just to visit or bring you flowers. I’m so sorry for not being upfront." Her voice was quiet as she spoke.

Charlotte smiled gently, her warmth cutting through the tension. "I know, my dear. And it’s okay. You don’t need to apologize. If you wanted to bring me flowers, they’d be the largest bouquet in the world, I’m sure of it."

Harlow managed a small smile, grateful for the older woman’s understanding. But she felt conflicted. In her past life, Grandma Hamilton had been her confidante, a steady presence she could rely on. Harlow had poured out all her worries to her back then, and the woman had always listened without judgment. But this was different. Alanis was here, seated across the table, his piercing gaze a constant reminder of his presence.

He had a strong presence of being noticed no matter the size of the room.

She wasn’t here to gain his pity. No. She had returned to destroy him, not to earn his sympathy.

Her thoughts turned dark as her father’s venomous words replayed in her mind. Frank Blackwood wasn’t just a powerful man; he was the most powerful man in the world. A man capable of obliterating her with nothing more than a snap of his fingers. Going toe-to-toe with him wasn’t just risky—it was suicidal.

All she wanted was teach him a little lesson for kicking her out and embarrassing her.

How had it come to this? How had she gone from being his beloved daughter to someone he regarded as a competitor, an enemy?

Every father dreamed of seeing their children surpass them, didn’t they? But Frank? He had let Claudia and her mother twist his mind until Harlow had become his scapegoat, his punching bag.

Not only had they successfully driven her out of the mansion, but they had also planted the seeds of animosity that now consumed him.

Once, she had been his favorite. Now, she was the child he despised most. What had she done to bruise his ego so deeply?

She couldn’t let it end this way. One of the reasons she was glad to be back was to save him from his untimely death that destroyed their family. But if he keeps pushing her away, she wants sure she would be able to save him anymore.

Tomorrow, she would confront him directly. She needed to speak with him, face to face, to lay everything bare.

She would tell him the truth, that she was Miss H. And she would explain why she had hidden her identity all this time. Perhaps then, they could settle their differences. Perhaps then, she could finally start to piece her life back together.
